Is it fair to equate the money changers with bankers? Don’t get me wrong. I have no problems with seeing both groups fed into a wood chipper. But money changers exploit the arbitrage position between the value of one (likely corrupt) currency and another, while bankers generally deal with a single currency, and, when honest banking is the norm (way before central banking), provide safe storage of monies and lending when needed (not to be confused with a general endorsement of bankers – just the needed societal purpose some once provided, in an honest manner).

I don’t know enough about the biblical backdrop, but generally the exploitive nature of the moneychangers comes from the fact that taxes were generally due in the local currency, or other legal tender laws were in place, and they typically exploited folks with outrageous fees because they knew the exchange was required. Obviously conducting such business in the temple should have received condemnation from everyone, not just Jesus, and further illustrates his outrage at the behavior of the religious “leadership” at the time.

I have seen the two groups equated previously, and was just musing this morning.
