Here’s how the killing of a top Iranian military leader will reverberate in the Middle East and beyond

Via Stratfor

It’s the spark to ignite a major conflagration: The Pentagon said late Jan. 2 that it launched an overnight strike in Baghdad ordered by President Trump, killing several officials linked with Iran, including Qassem Soleimani, the powerful commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force.

In addition to Soleimani, the head of the Iraqi Kataib Hezbollah militia, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and the deputy head of Hezbollah in Lebanon, Naim Qassem, were reportedly killed, although the latter’s death has yet to be confirmed.

Ultimately, Iran will absolutely seek to retaliate against the U.S. — the only question is at what level, what scale and when.

The Pentagon explicitly noted that among other reasons, the United States conducted the strike in retaliation for the attempt by supporters of Kataib Hezbollah to overrun the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone on Dec. 31, but the decision to target one of Iran’s most important military figures is sure to raise tensions between Iran and the United States in the Middle East to new heights.

Soleimani’s death, which had followed a stark warning by U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper that the U.S. was willing to preemptively strike Iranian-backed militias in Iraq to protect U.S. forces, will reverberate throughout the Middle East.

As the head of the Quds Force, Soleimani was, more or less, the peer of generals leading the U.S. military’s actions in Afghanistan or Iraq. Naturally, his killing opens the way for a significant escalation, as Iran could well target high-ranking U.S. military personnel in the Middle East in response.

Ultimately, Iran will absolutely seek to retaliate against the United States — the only question is at what level, what scale and when.

Here’s how Soleimani’s death might affect a number of areas around the Middle East and the wider world:

Iraq

The risk that Iraqi militias backed by Iran would attack U.S. and Western forces, assets and, potentially, commercial interests was already high, but it’s just increased precipitously.

Although Iranian-backed militias led by leaders like al-Muhandis were not popular among many Iraqis, the U.S. move to stoke a conflict with Iran on Iraqi soil will inject serious diplomatic tension into Baghdad’s relationship with Washington and fuel nascent efforts in the Iraqi parliament to reevaluate Iraq’s security cooperation with the United States.

It will also complicate the Iraqi security force’s efforts to continue to work closely with Washington against the Islamic State.

Israel

Israel reportedly had come close to assassinating Soleimani a handful of times in recent years. And based on the missile threat that it perceives from the Quds Force and the Iraqi militias led by al-Muhandis and others, Israel will no doubt support this decision by Washington.

But potential Hezbollah retaliation against U.S. interests in Lebanon could also turn into attacks on Israel, given the widespread perception in Lebanon — and throughout the region — that U.S. and Israeli interests against Iran and its allies are one and the same. In the worst-case scenario, that could touch off a separate fight between Israel and Iran.

Lebanon

Iran’s strong presence in Lebanon through Hezbollah makes the possibility of retaliation against U.S. targets there a distinct possibility. Hezbollah exercises influence in large swaths of Lebanon, including parts of Beirut, and has the capability to launch attacks against U.S. targets in the country. That risk will be even more pronounced if the death of Qassem, Hezbollah’s second in command, is confirmed.

Saudi Arabia and Gulf oil producers

It has been nearly four months since Iran attacked the Abqaiq and Khurais oil-processing facilities, taking half of Saudi Arabia’s oil production down. If the United States and Iran continue their escalation with direct strikes on one another, Iran could certainly retaliate against countries like Saudi Arabia, one of the closest U.S. allies in the region, and their economic interests. Each of the Gulf Cooperation Council states — particularly Bahrain and Qatar — hosts a significant U.S. military presence that Iran could target.

Persian Gulf

In addition to direct attacks on GCC member states, Iran could launch more attacks against the U.S. naval presence in the Persian Gulf. For most of U.S. President Donald Trump’s term in office, Iran has hesitated to use its naval assets to harass U.S. ships in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman despite its aggressive strategy to counter U.S. sanctions pressure.

That, however, could change: As it is, the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group reported last month that Iranian naval ships had harassed it as it was leaving its deployment in the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea.

Syria

Soleimani’s death is a blow, but likely not a crippling one, to Iran’s ability to conduct its extensive operations in Syria. The United States does not have a significant presence in Syria compared to what it has in Iraq and the Persian Gulf, but the remaining U.S. forces in Syria are near Iranian-allied militia forces, meaning they could become a target.

Afghanistan

Iran could decide to strike the United States in Afghanistan, given the target-rich environment of U.S. soldiers and military assets in the country, as well as Iran’s history of support for the Taliban. Iran is better positioned to strike elsewhere — since it does not directly control or direct the Taliban as it does other proxy forces — but the possibility of retaliation in the war-torn country cannot be ruled out.

Yemen

Iran could push the Houthi rebels in Yemen to launch retaliatory attacks against U.S. allies as well, even though Iran does not directly control that group, either. The Houthis maintain a robust arsenal of drones as well as ballistic and cruise missiles, which they have used to carry out attacks in Yemen, Saudi Arabia and surrounding waters such as the Bab el-Mandeb strait.

Potential targets include, but are not limited to, airports, critical infrastructure, energy infrastructure, military targets and vessels transiting the Red Sea.

Beyond the Middle East

The threat of retaliation is not limited to the Middle East, given Iran’s history of conducting attacks against targets ranging from Latin America to Eastern Europe and South Asia, among others. Iran has also been linked to numerous plots in Western countries, including in Belgium, Denmark, France, the United States and the United Kingdom in recent years.

Trump willingly takes the blame, protecting Israel, giving his loyal base an erection and spiking oil prices helping oil producers, stresses importance of the military, makes Dems look like pussies, lather rinse repeat. A Man named Harold; and a president named Barack.

This summarizes how most liberals view the US military:
Harold was a bright child. He grew up in America. He went to school and had a bright future ahead of him. Harold was full of life but was cut short in a violent moment. While few people had ever heard of Harold before his death, many did afterward And in death, something very shocking happened. What was so shocking, especially when it is compared to the death of someone else recently in the news?

Harold was Harold Greene, Major General, United States Army. On Aug. 5, 2014, Major General Greene was killed by a Taliban terrorist.

He was returned to America with full military honors.

It has been a tradition that the president attends the funeral of General and Flag officers killed in the line of duty.

Richard Nixon attended the funeral of a Major General Casey killed in Vietnam and George W. Bush attended the funeral of Lieutenant General Timothy Maude, who was killed in the 9/11 attacks.

While Major General Greene was buried, Barack Obama was golfing. The Vice President wasn’t there either. Neither was the Secretary of Defense.

Flags were not even lowered half-mast.

Four days after Harold Greene gave his life for America, Michael Brown was killed in Ferguson, Missouri.

Brown was at best a young thug. In the minutes before his death, he committed a robbery at a local convenience store. According to other reports, Brown struck Officer Darren Wilson and shattered his orbital bone. Obama sent a three-person delegation to Brown’s funeral!

Neither Obama nor Biden would attend the funeral of the highest ranking military officer killed in the line of duty since 9/11, yet he sent a delegation to the funeral of a thug.

When Margaret Thatcher, one of America’s staunchest allies and Ronald Reagan’s partner in bringing down Soviet communism died, Obama sent only a small low-level delegation to her funeral. The snub was not missed by the British.

When Chris Kyle, the most lethal American sniper in history was murdered, there was no expression of sympathy from the White House.

But when Whitney Houston died from drug overdose, the Obama/Biden administration ordered all flags be flown at half-mast.

There was no White House delegation at the funeral of an American hero. American heroes die and Obama goes to the golf course.

A thug dies and he gets a White House delegation.

No wonder most “REAL” Americans hold Obama in such contempt, especially members of our Military.

And Biden is now expounding on how great the Obama/Biden administration was.

Stand up for the “Harolds” in America.

The US attacked Iraq under false allegations. Afterwards the trespassers set up the largest US embassy abroad and a permanent military occupation of their sovereign homeland. For a long time they have been asked to leave but the trespassers refuse and instead have worn out their welcome and are squatting on their land violating their own agreements with the Iraqi government. The US is an unwelcome invader just like they are everywhere in the world. But please continue to watch your Smith-Mundt Modernization Act compliant television for your daily dose of once illegal US propaganda.

40 years ago, I would agree with you. But Iran was actually not a problem for us prior to Bush Jr’s Axis of Evil speech. When September 11, 2001 happened, Iranians spontaneously showed support to us in street vigils. They were on our side to that point when Bush made a major policy change in a speech none of his advisors got to proofread. Iran has a radical weirdbeard leadership, but the rank and file Persians don’t necessarily support them. There are a lot of moderates and liberals who don’t want a war with anyone and pretending there aren’t is silly. I assume Israel and our neocon retards want this war. You should not.

That being said, after all the people Iran killed of ours in Iraq with their weapons and EFP platter charges, a little turnaround isn’t all bad. They used Iraq as a new Vietnam on us, so payback is bitch. But we don’t need another war, especially since we haven’t finished the two 20 year old ones yet.

So killing an evil mass murderer is now considered bad even though his OWN PEOPLE cheered his death. This is what liberalism has done. Mulsims understand only ONE thing. Force. They f’d with the WRONG president. We aren’t going to pay them billions to stop killing us why they still keep on killing us. This will actually bring STABILITY to this s’hole armpit of the world because the despots who order people to put their lives on the front line now know THEIR heads are going to be on a stake. Plus, our military won’t be told to surrender if the enemy waves a gay pride flag. This is a FAR different beast under Trump than the homo from Kenya. You liberal d’bags think the way to handle a bully is to give into all his demands. Disgusting. This is what happens when diversocrats run schools while offering bouncy houses, cookies and coloring like Yale. These aren’t young adults. They’re barely adolescents. And if these imagined sleeper cells get activated…. GOOD! They were in place and need to be removed. You morons think we should be the ones living in fear? There shouldn’t even be a plan. And FYI–Iran will not be a push-over like Iraq or Afghanistan or Libya.
Not at all.

Let’s spend another two or three trillion dollars doing so.
I’m all for it (not).

When it starts–kiss some of your beloved Navy goodbye.
As in sunk–burning and twisting.
And expect a rain or armed missiles to come down upon US bases.
Expect many, many deaths of US military (government parasites).
Expect Israel to be blanketed with missiles (and who cares except you deluded fucked-up, bible-tard’s).
Actually you bible-tard’s will get what you deserve–nuclear flames that is.

We don’t have the man-power, ammo, ships and aircraft to take care of the whole regions once it explodes.
And for what–because Israel hates Iran? Because they feeeeeeel threatened.
