He should have put the knife down. The officer did his job. It also put him in the awkward situation of taking a persons life. I wish that on no one. That said what was the point of this video?

This by far is the more common type of restraint provided against total assholes, drunks, druggies, madness in all sorts of encounters that they deal with day by day, hour by hour… vs the other which is the asshole being behind the badge. That is the point.

Downvote away.

Actually it is not. A few hours research on the internet studying police shootings on video will prove that police shootings without clear justification are far more common than the justified shootings. They investigate themselves so cover ups of bad shootings are the rule rather than the exception.

Most times the restraint doesn’t end in a shooting. Because they exercised restraint. Usually the restraint when being threatened is able to end in stand down, more rarely it does not. If they were actually trigger happy, things would end much worse.

And no, the internet doesn’t know about the majority of attacks on police or by police so you certainly aren’t making legitimate comparisons. Selection bias will result in BAD encounters showing up where you can learn about them VASTLY MORE.

LiveLeak.com frequently posts body cam footage that gets no media attention and the majority show the situation in the officer’s favor. You’re just wrong.

The perpetual backing up part really bothers me.
Issue your commands, stand your ground and if not complied with shoot and don’t stop shooting until the threat is completely stopped when threatened with deadly physical force.

Every person has the right of self defense. The fact that a cop did the shooting is immaterial.

I want to know why the cops kept backing up. I would have stood my ground because backing up is hazardous; no eyes in the back of the head.

I also want to know why the loonie was allowed to get back up. Actually, I know why – stupid rules. Once the shooting starts, the idea ought to be to prevent the loonie from getting back up. The cop that got tackled should have emptied his gun into the loonie along with the other cops. Getting tackled by some crazy should never happen, especially when there are bullets available.

Harrison (the first cop) had no business carrying a gun. Not many people (and not many cops) do. It is an awesome responsibility. Too bad there is not an easier way to find out if you are qualified for an essential part of your job, but there it is. An unqualified person, with a badge and a gun, putting other people in danger. Likely a person often frightened while working. And this person, by the hundreds of thousands, all over the country, might pull you over any time. Scared, with a badge and a gun. It is amazing that this sort of thing is not a lot more common. Could these people be relied upon in a real pinch?

Support your local police? Not so much.

Right, if they were really qualified they could have just shot the knife out to the guy’s hand. I know what you’re saying. And they are supposed to be trained for situations under duress too. The cops heart rate should have stayed the same no matter what the situation. It’s lucky that the guy didn’t take their car and try to run them over too. Well at least give them credit by them remembering to take the keys out of the ignition.

A couple thoughts occurred to me while watching this disturbing video.

One, the Taser option by the flanking cop should have been tried as soon as the perp stared advancing.
If he misses, and or the perp keeps advancing, then either cop was within their rights to drop him.
Alas, fear of unwarranted shooting, media, lawsuits, and cop hatred has put them in terrible positions.

Since the cop was desperately trying to avoid killing this guy, his mistake was allowing contact on the perp’s terms…backing up, to the point of the distance closing too short at the end.
Easy to Monday Morning Quarterback the evaluation, but if he couldn’t bring himself to shoot, the right response might have been to meet the perp head on, when he started running, with a bum-rush shoulder hit to meet force with force, at full speed. Take the wind out of his sails, with a head on body collision.

Dangerous, for sure. Could have lost his life to a stabbing, but since he was showing incredible restraint
in shooting him, a bum rush collision might have ended without shots fired.

Pretty sure that some company makes a boom cannon that fires a large net over
a flock of birds or other animals, to capture them after baiting.

Why couldn’t a smaller version of that be part of a patrol car’s equipment.
If they get a call that a lunatic is on foot, and threatening people or cops with a weapon,
deploy a cast netting at a distance of 10 feet to wrap that bastard up, so he could no longer run at them,
and couldn’t swing or lunge with a knife with the restriction a net would provide.

At least long enough where they could jump on him, isolate the knife, and subdue him. Nobody dies.
Obviously, if the threat has a gun, such a tactic wouldn’t work.

Helluva dilemma. No easy solutions.

Seven shots, and the guy gets back up. I guess the initial falling down to the ground was psychological response. If he were on a mind-altering substance and didn’t pay attention to the shots, he could well have reached the officer the first time.
The officer was probably using 9mm or maybe .40SW. Good to see what such a handgun can, or can’t, do in that situation.

Head and spine shots are the only guaranteed immediate game stopper.

I agree with you. Go over to Eric Peters the Libertarian Car Guy and read the comments there for some Libertarian logic. lol
The thing that I have learned about the Libertarian dogma/cult, is that everything that they stand for and promote would only carry over to a small community. It’s really lacking when trying to apply it to large population. In fact the way that I see it, it would only be able to work in a community of only two people. If there were three people it would turn into a democracy where the two people would turn into wolves and there would only be one Libertarian left to be eaten. Like if two people agreed that something needed to be done, and that all would need to contribute to it, it would be game over. You can never ask a Libertarian to contribute to anything that they don’t want to. But you better be able to buy into whatever they say is the Golden Rule or else.

If a police officer cannot disarm a person with a knife without resorting to lethal force, he has no business being a police officer. A baton or nightstick properly used can easily disarm a person with a knife or other instrument.

De-escalation of force used to be the norm until police doctrine on the use of “deadly force” along with favorable”supreme court” decisions absolving police officers of the need to use de-escalation tactics became the norm. “I feahed fo mah life” is the new excuse and is quite often used to justify the police use of deadly force.

Any ordinary citizen who attempts such a defense will be rolled over and convicted by an overzealous prosecutor and corrupt court system. You see, the “thin blue line” takes care of its own.

Add to that, the adoption of israeli military tactics in which “shoot first and ask questions later” is the new normal, “we are all Palestinians, now”.

God, you are bone-deep stupid. But on this thread, you are in good company.

The cops did as they were trained and yet came very close to losing at least one life/wounded. Gun vs. Knife is more dangerous than most folks realize a person can close 30′ of distance in a surprisingly fast manner….you might miss or even with some good hits, still get stabbed to death.

The cops clearly did not want to shoot the man and went above and beyond to avoid having to do so.

Nobody in any law enforcement agency would willingly choose to physically disarm a person with a knife….not with a baton! That is just wrong (and nuts!)….I bet I could easily put a very serious hurt on you with a knife….you pick any police issue baton you want….

Maybe you have been watching too many videos of this idiot.

I’ll just say what I saw. A dude getting accosted by lying faggots. Dozens of lying ignorant, corrupt lying faggots. Dude walking down the street wanting to be left alone and not wanting to harm anyone … until the lying faggot cops show up. So the faggot with the camera shows up and backs up and backs and issues illegal, moral DEMANDS on the dude they are trying to rape. And despite the spew coming from the throats of these lying faggots he IGNORES THEM … AS HE JUST WANTS TO BE LEFT ALONE. But the faggots won’t. They are on the sent of blood and want to kill. Eventually the dude rushes one of the faggots … disarms the lying cunt and is about to shove his own FAGGOT STICK UP HIS ASS .. when one of the other lying faggots … sets up and goes in for the kill and shots an unarmed man, trying to defend himself … 18 times in the chest.

That’s how I read it. LYING FAGGOT CUNT COPS … SHOOTING SOMEONE WHO JUST WANTS TO BE LEFT ALONE.

So .. just a question. How do you read this ? Should the dude should have just be left alone ? Followed, harassed and asked demanding questions like PUT THE KNIFE DOWN !!!! DON”T DO THIS !!!

How about the lying motherfucker of a cop PUT HIS FUCKING GUN DOWN AND WALK THE FUCK AWAY. Pretty easy … shouldn’t it be ? But know … the lying faggot cops got to escalate, escalate, and escalate until they take some dude who just wants to be left alone and shoot him … until he’s dead.

What I really want to know … is why the motherfuckers are not brought up on murder charges and hanged outside the police station or better yet … the courthouse they hide behind. And there you have your answer … the criminals who run our courts who let these faggots get away with murdering their own citizens.

I have watched this video with a heavy heart/sadness before.

I have never been in this nightmare situation the Cop who almost loss his life was in or been a LEO.

Come on, this may have been a successful SUICIDE BY COP attempt as labeled…but it was also an unsuccessful – determined – relentless MURDER OF A COP attempt.

At this point in my life, with my past, I would have granted the deadly suicidal mentally ill lunatic/demonic/PCP fueled threats (all three have happened in one individual – but one alone is all that is needed) from this seemingly possessed being who is human. I think I would have granted him HIS WISH…long before anyone else was put in risk, especially me. But I am an old scared survivor and that is a different perspective from the LEO on the vid.

Listen to the tone and constant PLEAS of this young Cop. He knew at one point the cop back up to his right was letting the ‘charging knife threat’ get too close to him, and ordered him back, yet he almost lost his life after the last charge of the wounded ‘threat’.

I’m not condemning the LEO, I am saying his heart is too big, and inexperienced, as its size and Nicky New Guy inexperience almost had a knife plunged into it because he hesitated doing what was most important…his survival.

To me the LEO back up on the hesitating LEO’s right, should have fired as well during that last CHARGE…maybe he did and missed, and I missed that? If he didn’t fire I can’t see what may have held him back in his field of fire? Maybe other people? You have to be there to really understand what really happened, videos are one dimensional, and that is nothing.

Plus, what is the back story?????? I have no idea.

I also have no idea of this young LEO’s past but he knew the extremely short distance a knife wielding suicidal lunatic/demonic/PCP fueled man needs to charge and kill an armed LEO or Joe Sixpack in a parking lot with a knife just…….21 FEET.…..and to me he was desperately trying not to do what he should have done…ended this threat much sooner. His voice tone announced he didn’t want to…long after it was a moot/shoot point.

Humanity can be an ‘expense’ back pedal during a mental illness, demonic possession, and/or drug fueled rage attack and that cost could be your life…as a Cop or Joe Sixpack.

My take.

I think the whole video pretty much describes the “Ferguson Effect”. Police are now avoiding doing what needs to be done immediately because of the repercussions that will come later when the spin is applied by everyone after the fact. And if this guy didn’t actually get close enough to get his hands on the cop there would be a lot of people out there to say that the police overreacted and this person didn’t need to be shot. That’s just the way it is now. And the media will back the perpetrator right up until the point as to where the police can be exonerated, though everyone will remember clearly the media’s spin and miss the blurred exoneration.
This has been proven time and again in the most media controlled cases. Not that there isn’t police misconduct sometimes. But the media is always looking for the next big story. So why not make it real big right.

Maybe the first cop was shooting rubber bullets? Looks like the 2nd shooter had lead bullets.

Not sure-as said elsewhere-why a Taser was not used? Didn’t have one? Didn’t know how to use it? Department guidelines did not allow use of taser in that type of situation?

Wondering if the whole video was staged.

I have known midnight shift cops who would have taken the guy down one-on-one with no shots fired and no blood drawn. And yes, those recollections are of a long time ago before “politically correct” was invented.

I can understand (maybe) a young newbie cop acting like this guy acted, but I sure as hell hope the Chief does a thorough review and gets things corrected asap; if not, he needs to be replaced.

Tasers are incredibly unreliable. Basic clothing interference can stop them from being fully effective. Especially with a consistently moving target. Add in possible drug influence (you saw how much he was bleeding after the first shots right?) Tasers were not an option with someone like this.

You folks saying “why not Taser” have never seen even skilled people with tasers trying to hit moving targets, and are not paying attention to how much the guy was bleeding after getting shot and STILL GOT UP. The officers clearly knew more about the condition of the guy and correctly determined that the space (wide open), the clothes, the behavior, meant Taser was not a deterrent.

The problem with a taser is distance…..once you are within 21′ of the suspect to shoot the taser….he is able to stab you before you can kill him, 99% of the time. The headshot the guy in the TX church made at 50′ is the (less than 1%)….how many deer have you shot that just fell over? A couple maybe but not many…they usually run a ways…..well if that deer is a crazed man with a knife and likely on pain number drugs well……he is going to stab you not just once but multiple times.

When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

Everything about that interaction was a series of poor choices on both sides with the only solution being- as we witnessed- death. If that cop doesn’t resign, he needs to be moved to a safe desk somewhere deep inside a well protected building where people can make sure he doesn’t get hurt. Where he shouldn’t be is out on the street with a gun again, he’s clearly not cut out for this line of work. His partner wasn’t much better, but maybe another cycle through the police academy wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Not anticipating any changes to be forthcoming though, this is, after all, America.

I’m not a cop, never been trained to do it, but I have been trained in other martial fields and have seen what well disciplined men with proper equipment can do to force compliance from people who were otherwise unwilling to submit to beforehand.

You can’t expect me to believe that all the people in prisons and jails today wound up there because they walked in voluntarily or were insistent on being shot to death. There are means and methods and they appear to be employed elsewhere. I do know that if the first cop had fired the same number of rounds into the legs there would have been a much slower chase then the one we saw that almost cost him his life.

I agree, personally in that situation, I would have probably shot for the torso just as the cop did when he was charged. What I would have done differently was as soon as he got up I would have taken out his legs. Unfortunately, police get very little training in non lethal methods and are trained to kill rather than subdue in these situations.

That’s why I mentioned PCP?

I got into it with a guy on PCP during a shoplifting apprehension in 85 in San Angelo Texas (thank God he didn’t have a knife). I quickly took him to ground with a foot sweep, got him in a choke hold from behind knowing I had back up ready, but it eventually took three other managers plus another employee who ‘had to jump in’ – as the lunatic was dragging all four of around, to help subdue him to the point to get cuffs on him. The five of us were barely able to subdue him…plus the kicker was he was tall but built like an undernourished beanpole. Probably 6′ 1″ but maybe 150 lbs. soaking wet.

That drug gives some people almost superhuman strength, and a rage that borders on demonic!

The police in NH need not hide behind women and bystanders with their guns. The “civilians” pack heavy AR15s.

In the 1970s and 80s, everyone age 14 and up knew where the gun and ammo was at in my neighborhood. Very secure and I don’t recall too much mayhem back then.

Mayhem was for the military at age 17.

The America of our birth is dead. Training grounds for boys to learn to become men no longer exist. Matter of fact, boys are only noticed when they put on lipstick and gaudy dresses .It truly is a bitch’s world. Prepare accordingly.

” The rough-and-ready democracy of boy life: that is gone. There is no boy life. We make sure of that, and our polity suffers for it.

Athenian democracy depended upon the gymnasium, which functioned as school and athletic arena and military training ground. When you are stripped for the arena, you can’t tell rich man from poor, but you can tell the strong from the weak, and the brave from the timid. The boy who stands up for his rights or, better still, for the rights of a smaller boy against a bully, wins the esteem of his fellows, and if he had in Teddy’s time to win it with his fists, so much the better. Nowadays, a boy of no special intelligence or athletic prowess will hardly ever be in the company of a large group of boys doing something interesting or risky. He will not be noticed at all, unless perchance he begins to put on lipstick and a skirt. Then we throw him a party.”

There is a bit of a backstory to this. Athens Clarke County had a pretty bad run with police/community relations last year. This was actually the 3rd fatal shooting to happen

There was also a huge outcry when an officer hit a fleeing felon with his car, was immediately hired in a neighboring county and then cleared of any wrongdoing by the GBI. It was a giant clusterfuck in the police department.

I think the cop hesitated because Athens is a very criminal friendly city, it’s gotten much worse the last few years.

Pretty foolish to publish your name and say something like that. I understand the “it’s just my job/I was only following orders” line, that’s been used before, but America has never experienced a 4G style war on it’s own soil. You start rounding up your neighbors for defending themselves and someone is going to find a way to settle the score and it’s probably going to happen when you are away from home rounding up people because it’s your job and your family is going to be the ones on the receiving end of the hostilities.

I hope cooler heads prevail, but it seems like this is almost a certainty at this point.

Approach a cop with knife in hand after being told to stop, you die.. How basic is that? After the guy got up after the first shooting and took one step toward the cop, both cops should have emptied their magazines. Then they should have told the cop hating “libertarians” on TBP to fuck off.

Get in your car and knock him down, failing that pull batons, circle him, dose him a time or two with CS and then beat the fuck out of him.
Or run like bitches with pistols out (which you wont use) until he grabs one of you and cuts them. Then shoot him.
F++k this country is screwed up.

Charging someone with at knife is assault with a deadly weapon, and justifies shooting them. Too bad all police shootings are not as justified as this one.

Pussy cop should have shot sooner. He endangered his coworkers, third parties, and himself (conspicuously). And these dipshits think they can disarm a whole state? (Virginia) I’ve no doubt the feds will employ death squads, but me thinks VA will be a tougher nut to crack than the “other side” imagines. There are too many pissed off White people today. NO OFFICER YOU CAN’T HAVE MY FUCKING GUN!
