What Rush Means To Us, And To Me

Guest Post by Kurt Schlichter

What Rush Means To Us, And To Me

It’s a tribute to the great Rush Limbaugh that the reaction to his cancer diagnosis by the tens of millions of people he inspired was not to be devastated but to focus and to resolutely offer their thoughts and prayers in his fight. And he will fight – he’ll fight this like he has fought everything and everyone else that tried to take him out over the last third of a century. He is the archetypal conservative brawler, a no-apologies, no-excuses conservative who never submitted, never allowed himself to be domesticated and neutered by the elite. At the same time, he is gracious and a charity juggernaut. We love him for his strength and wit, and the left – to judge by its vicious, hateful glee over the news – has never forgiven him for either.

But then, the glory of Rush is that he doesn’t ask to be forgiven.

Here’s how I learned about Rush. I was back from the Gulf War in mid-1991, out of the Army and staying with my parents for a few weeks before I went to LA to start law school. One day, a guy I grew up with who lived across the street told me, “You gotta hear this Rush guy!”

“What’s a Rush?”

“Rush Limbaugh!”

That’s when this all began for me. Sure, I was conservative already, but I was kind of on my own. Lots of us were – millions of us thought we were the only ones who thought like we did. Back then, being a conservative meant you waited for the National Review and maybe the American Spectator to show up in your mailbox. That was it. That was the whole conservative media. You social media cons are spoiled. We were the conservative diaspora.

And conservatism was still nice. Nice worked for Ronald Reagan, but he had a spine of steel. Nice did not work for George H.W. Bush. He would dive bomb a Japanese destroyer and send me and half a million others off to war, but get into an undignified political brawl? Oh well, I never! He got pummeled.

But Rush was not interested in submission. He was interested in conservatism, raw and undiluted. And he gathered us together and demonstrated that we were not alone.

For me, Rush was preaching to the choir, but then the choir needs preaching to too. Yet, his most vital function is to create new conservatives out of mushy libs who were that way purely out of habit. I can’t count how many other conservatives I’ve met who were liberal until they heard Rush. The lies the liberals told about him were often the first liberal lies these converts noticed – they tuned in expecting a monster and got a good natured, funny but uncompromising conservative who won millions of people over through the power of the common sense of his message. People wondered that if liberals were lying to them about Rush, what else were they lying about?

My friend Andrew Breitbart, the other great non-governmental conservative visionary of the last 50 years, wrote about how he was converted and inspired by Rush. That’s the importance of Rush to our movement – he generates conservatives out of liberals and moderates, all by talking to them like they are adults.

But while freedom and the Constitution sell themselves, don’t underestimate Rush’s technical skills as an entertainer. Today, I occasionally substitute for incredible radio hosts like Hugh Hewitt and Larry O’Connor – every conservative host traces his lineage to Rush. And doing that job gives you an appreciation of what it takes and what Rush does. You stare at that mic looming in front of your face and realize you have 11 minutes until the next hard break to fill with coherent thoughts that will keep hands off that dial. But Rush has done that for decades, making it look easy (it’s not) and without the crutch of guests. It’s all him.

There has never been anyone like him on radio, and never will be again. But there will be many who were mentored by him whether Rush knew them or not.

People say there would be no Trump without Rush, but it’s more than that. There would be no conservatism without him. Our movement could have been strangled in the cradle, but Rush nurtured and grew it off in what had been the abandoned wasteland of AM radio where the smart set never bothered to venture.

He started in the three-network era and singlehandedly busted that liberal monopoly on discourse. Rush ignored the gatekeepers and simply tore down the whole gate. Oh, they tried to stop him. They tried to force him off the air, because they feared the unstoppable combination of unparalleled talent promoting the ideology of human freedom backed with the courage to never quit. He could have walked away years ago. He could have taken his money and retired. But he’s there, every day, working in the cause of freedom.

How they hate him. His announcement was met by determination and faith from his friends and vile delight by his enemies on the left. Did you see a single major Democrat take to social media to wish him well? Keep that in mind when they invite you to disarm.

Remember, they hate Rush not for anything he did, but simply for articulating American freedom effectively and without equivocation. They want him to die, literally, because they disagree with what he thinks, so how do you think they feel about you? Again, consider that the next time a Democrat tells you to give up your guns.

I think back on the countless hours I spent with Rush in my car and smile. It seems like he’s always been there, a voice of sanity during the Clinton years, the Bush 43 years, Obama years, and the Trump era. He’s been there pretty much my whole adult life. A lot of you younger cons never knew a time before Rush. He was always there when you turned on the radio, doing his unique thing, not part of any other network or organization, entirely sui generis.

He’s Rush.

And though I never met him, he’s been amazingly gracious to me. Every once in a while, my phone will go nuts, and I know the great Rush Limbaugh has read one of my Townhall columns on the air again, and no doubt mispronounced my last name!

Rush, you can pronounce “Schlichter” any way you please. If not for you, I probably would not be a columnist, or an author, or an occasional radio host. Thank you.

Rush Limbaugh is just another priest in the church of politics. His brand of religious fervor is at odds with practitioners of the other political religions, but they all have one thing in common. They want to control the population and force the creation of winners and losers by the policies they enact and enforce at the point of a gun.

Rush Limbaugh is a scumbag just like all the other political priests.

Dude, Duuude! That is unbecoming. I think one can argue that Rush is the first step on a conservatives journey, and the longest journey begins with a single step.

Rush single-handedly broke the Fairness Doctrine and established conservative talk radio……he paved a path for many others to follow.

Liberals have tried many times to replicate his deceptively simple format. 3 hours of the “stack of stuff”….very few interviews just Rush and a few calls from listeners on “open line Fridays”…..that’s it.

He has been successful with that for 30+ years…….

Is Rush the ultimate conservative? Of course, not, there is no such thing/person and he is not an anarchist by any means. He wants what our founders wanted (who were not anarchists either) a limited government that is run by folks who love America and trust that the American people will do the right thing if left mostly alone.

That is not a bad place to start.

Rush has brought many millions to our cause by his daily “debunking” of what the left is doing, why it doesn’t work, can’t work and in fact hurts people.

In the last decade or so Rush has become more “hardcore” saying things he would have never had said 15 years ago, much better on the 2A and in a much more skeptical orientation to the Deep State/Left cabal. Rush gets the Deep State/administrative state. Think about the millions of folks he has helped to see beyond the propaganda of the MSM.

So no Rush is not just another shill, preaching his own wallet…..he has not had to work for a very long time but he does anyway because he loves what he is doing and believes it.

Rush is not going to be out there advocating for no government and radical freedom….but that’s OK…..he has helped shift the Overton window in the preferred direction.

In the final analysis, he wants his ‘conservative’ religion to control the population as opposed to the ‘liberal’ religion. He’s just another control freak.

The fact that he may have woken folks up to the more logical conservatism, is, in my opinion, reasonable. But then he went too far by preaching for the ass hats in the Republican party to screw the population.

Just shut up. We can judge trees by their fruits. The body count is the only count that counts. Ruined living lives aren’t really alive. They can torture people in jail. Hegelian. Paying invaders to invade is absolute winning against us. Paying mothers to enslave fathers is absolute victory over us. Just shut up.

In the early 1990s when I worked at an oil production office of a certain major oil company in Bakersfield, the operations personnel used to turn on their radios in the morning (no head phones) and listen to this guy every single day, week in, week out. By the time lunch rolled around, they would be so worked up and pissed off that the engineering staff couldn’t get any work proposals agreed to that weren’t discussed before Rush Limbaugh’s show started. By noon, the entire office of about 50 staff was so full of piss and vinegar that all work proposals / discussions / planning were immediately rejected / criticized / fobbed off by the operations managers once that damned radio show started.

It got so bad I had to go to the Profit Center Manager and get all radios banned in the office as we could get almost no work done due to this Rush Limbaugh, and I’m not kidding nor am I exaggerating. After the ban, the operating staff were furious but over time there really was a palpable improvement in the collective mood.

This guy was poison as far as I’m concerned, even though I agree with him sometimes with what I have heard second hand he espouses. Pure negativity is the worst way to get ideas across in my book.

I had no choice for two years between 1991-93. Captive audience I was until I couldn’t take his effect on the work environment any longer.

Master Snapple salesman he was however. Most of the folks in the office that listened to him also drank that Snapple.

And as usual, I am just passing on mostly experience, sprinkled with a bit of hard earned judgement. Albeit, contrarian judgement.

I first heard Rush about the summer of 1988 (in Minneapolis). It was a real breath of fresh air. He is articulate, intelligent, good sense of humor, and is able to link events together – that nobody would have considered. Many times he’s right on about things before they happen. He has enlightened many people.

He was, first and foremost, a Snapple salesman. He sold Snapple by telling people that had no control over outcomes what they wanted to hear, and that made people feel a connection with him and in turn that feeling of connection sold lots of bottles of Snapple.

Snapple first and foremost.

I count my successes by the number of down votes versus the number of actual replies. The cowards and mental midgets that down vote and don’t offer their reason aren’t worth spit so I just ignore them. They couldn’t produce a cogent argument for their position if their life depended on it. Same for the replies that just want to vent some insults at me not knowing I’m immune to that and expect it from the low IQ in the society; there’s hundreds of millions of them.

These are the people that vote. They haven’t the least bit of critical thinking ability. The emote instead of think and that is why THEY are the real problem in the society. They are easily led around by the nose by some slick talking fool and they line up behind him decade after decade with their standard of living getting reduced and the extra stupid ones enlist in the military to die for a bunch of sociopaths while waving a flag.

It funny how so many of the comments here on the surface, sound very similar to the liberal hate fest that celebrates the tragedy of cancer taking a human life.

I’m beginning to realize I’m more of a Christian than conservative, if this is how some respond to the stage 4 cancer Rush is facing.

FWIW, I have found most of Mr. Limbaugh’s commentary to be spot on, while at times missing the point of how much we have given up of our freedoms, in the name of a false security we think we have gained.

Still the man exposed McCain, Romney and other RINO’s and opened many former snowflakes to face the realities of the day, as opposed to running for their safe spaces in unicorn land.

I celebrate his contributions to the causes of freedom loving Americans and stand with him in prayer as he fights this devastating illness.

We’re responding to his legacy, not his cancer. His cancer only put him into the news front and center this week, so he is being commented on.

My experience is about half of Christians use their religion as a mask to hide their true motives. Not saying this is you, just relaying experience.

When I start a new contract in a new office first thing I do is I go through the office and look for those people with crosses or Bible verses hanging on their walls and – almost without fail – those same people have been the first people to try and stab me in the back, or they are having extramarital affairs. Like clockwork.

Jesus may Save, but he is also good at hiding the individual’s true character.

“Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. Has anyone else had the thought that the cancer announcement and medal on the same day was propaganda? I predict a complete recovery. It’s a miracle! God wills! Chase cucks, chase!

One look at the man that stood before us during the address. He did not look well. As a matter of fact he looked and acted like a man under a lot of stress. His wife had the same look to her as well. As far as your statement goes, I will hope and pray for a cure, miracle and all.

He did not, and neither did she, you are correct, it made the honor more fitting in my eyes, and I am certainly not a big fan.

I think on balance Rush has been a positive force – providing an almost lone common sense conservative voice when 99% of the media is lefty bullshit. That said, it’s unfortunate that he operates within the narrow window of allowed thought. Guess he wouldn’t be on the air for 30 years if he ventured too far off the script. What would be great is if he threw off his gloves and really started throwing punches in his last days on the air.

You just don’t get the idea of ‘controlled opposition’. The Repubs had control of the WH and Congress for Trump’s first two years. No repeal of Obumercare. No one said replace. It was only repeal. They did nothing. They claim a tax code victory. It’s not much for us. Where is the winning? Has the domestic Left every been in retreat? Even been fearful for their livelihoods or more? You don’t know what punch is. When several police officers force you to the concrete, you will learn what actual power and actual winning is. You Pollyanna do-gooders disgust me.

Did anyone else get angry with the great speech last nite? Greatest economy, for not white men. The best is yet to come. Herd animals so stupid.

About two years ago, I got all smart alecky to a police man and then, before I knew it, there were a bunch of policemen and I was on the concrete in handcuffs calling them some really foul names.

I ended up in the hospital for 12 hours of monitoring and learned a valuable lesson about my ability to see things that could not possibly be there.

These Christians love the guy who says talent on loan from Gawd, who says he’s right 99.999% of the time. They never call Rush a know-it-all. Total cult of personality. Christians are liars like socialists. If you don’t wear their symbols, you are either their infallible symbol or you are shit. Hence, my hate club. I hate you guys too. XOXO Happy slain saint day!

True. I can’t get what I want unless Christcucks become enraged bad boyz. That is the best hope, and a terrible one. There is only one other way. If you can’t be ’em, join ’em. Based you leading fucks here, I think I should focus my efforts on becoming the next president of the United States. The other Christians are worse. It should not be possible, but it’s true. Congrats to you!

Good lord, the Rush-haters here are on a whole new level (may 10 levels up) of vitriol and raw, pure hatred today. People have got some SERIOUS issues….. you almost have to wonder: what actually triggered them???

I enjoy listening to Rush and I will say a prayer to GOD for his full recovery, from the posts I have read here, it’s obviously an exercise in futility to say one for you folks….except maybe “Dutch”. So the guy promoted his advertisers, so he was paid by these advertisers, so what? It was his job, it’s how he earned his living. If you really listen to him, you might actually learn something, but you all seem to know everything already. Maybe if you learn to think for yourselves and not spew hatred towards a successful, kind hearted individual who happens to have a successful enterprise, just because you are jealous, you might be happier Americans.

Look Warren, there is nothing more dangerous than the shill who lulls the sheep into acceptance of their slavery. For four decades the guy told you what you wanted to hear, then you would hear from other sheep, “Rush said blah, blah ,blah and he really told them”. Rush said, Rush said, Rush said…..to what end? It’s called CONTROL.
Rush was a front man for the owners to keep the sheep docile and you felt he was on your side. Wrong.

About one month after Rush started that show, he came on the radio to give a major blowjob to Henry Fukkin Kissinger and Zbigniew Brzezinski with whom he had dined the night before. It was like he was orgasmic over those two criminals. I have no use for anyone who blows criminals of their ilk.

I’m not jealous, and I’m not a sheep. And that goes for you too Dan, ya fukkin “dittohead”.

I think Mark Steyn is more interesting, but since a year or two ago all political talk is boring. Solutions are obvious.
