The latest figures show there are now 60 confirmed cases of COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned that the virus is likely to spread and suggests Americans prepare for that scenario. This has a lot of Americans worried that they might get infected, and this concern has been compounded by the fact there hasn’t been a lot of information released regarding how lethal the virus is, how easily it infects people and more.
Health experts have warned that misinformation about the coronavirus has been spreading and that this misinformation presents a very real danger. Based on a social media analysis, Inverse has discovered that a lot of the misinformation that’s being spread online is coming from bots.
Christopher Bouzy, the founder of Bot Sentinel, did a Twitter analysis for Inverse and found these bots and trollbots are making an array of false claims. These bots are claiming China intentionally created the virus, that it’s a biological weapon, that Democrats are overstating the threat to hurt Donald Trump and more. While we can’t confirm the origin of these bots, they are decidedly pro-Trump.
Here are some of the many examples we found of this bot and trollbot activity:
“The two main themes are the coronavirus is a deep state/Democrat hoax, and it is nothing to be concerned about,” Bouzy tells Inverse. “The other is stoking fears about immigration and how Trump’s wall will protect us. We are also seeing how the coronavirus is a Chinese biological weapon.”
Bouzy says it’s common for bots to “prey on people’s worst fears to easily spread disinformation,” so it’s not surprising this is happening while people are freaked out about the coronavirus. He says it’s also common for them to use xenophobia to turn people against each other at times like this.
“Disinformation and misinformation spread quickly, especially if it is related to a major news event because people are actively searching for information, and too often they are unknowingly sharing false information,” Bouzy says. “We can use technology to help slow it down, but it really boils down to educating people on how to spot it. I believe this should be taught as soon as possible in schools, because critical thinking is extremely important to fight disinformation and misinformation.”
It shouldn’t be surprising that bots have latched onto the idea that the Chinese government created the coronavirus and that Democrats are overhyping the threat to hurt Trump considering Rush Limbaugh recently made this claim on his radio show.
The stock market has been tumbling for days due to coronavirus-related news, and it’s been reported that the Trump administration is trying to downplay the threat due to a fear that this virus outbreak harming the economy could also harm Trump’s chance of getting reelected in November.

Brooke Binkowski, managing editor at the fact-checking site Truth or Fiction and a disinformation expert, tells Inverse that disinformation like this could cause mass panics.
“What I’m concerned about most of all at the moment is that this will be leveraged almost certainly to blame immigrants, particularly immigrants of color,” Binkowski says. “It’s the oldest fucking trick in the book. Every time there’s some sort of pandemic the outsiders, whoever they might be, are blamed.”
Fox News host Tucker Carlson has already used coronavirus panic to make an argument against immigration and diversity. Binkowski says everyone needs to be careful about what information they share so they don’t contribute to the misinformation problem.
“It is more important than ever, since social media is not doing its own due diligence and is, in fact, contributing to the problem, to be as careful as possible about spreading bad information,” Binkowski says. “And bad actors are going to think it’s very funny and useful to contribute to the general air of panic that is almost inevitable. But we don’t have to let it happen. We have to be careful, we have to rely on vetted sources, we have to not let emotion rule the day. Be aware, don’t panic, but be prepared.”
Bots posting disinformation isn’t new, but we’re dealing with a public health crisis, so that makes this kind of disinformation especially dangerous. If social media companies are going to allow it to spread, then we have to fight it ourselves and make sure we’re not contributing to the problem.

Hmmmm, perhaps if the institutions (CDC, WHO) that are supposed to handle and disseminate information regarding diseases, help prevent and stop the spread of diseases along with other public health issues, would tell the truth and stay apolitical about said diseases and this virus in particular, then perhaps those ‘bots’ wouldn’t gain any credibility.

Here’s the key to this whole thing. Initially the R0 for the coronavirus was supposed to be half that of seasonal flu’s. The latest reprint from the WHO is looking at an R0 of between 3 and 5. So, if the seasonal flu kills so many with such a “relatively” low R0, if you’re 3x more likely to catch this thing then the impact could be more than nothing.

Yup, it’s only the flu….hand washing is soooo effective that only 646,000 died from the flu. Wonder if the dead washed their hands while relaxing? This virus is just getting started…time will tell how many are affected and killed.
These bugs kill a lot of people every year. No matter what you do. But mostly here is who they kill:
People with compromised or weak immune systems – the elderly, infants and folks like me with autoimmune disorders.
If you are a healthy person with a normal immune system who practices good hygiene the odds of you being killed by these viruses are so low it’s not even worth worrying about.
Even with an immune system that is essentially turned OFF (I take an immune system suppressent to control my AS) I don’t worry. When I get sick (like I did at the beginning of January) I go off my blockers, go on antibiotics and rest. A lot. Usually within a week I am good enough to go back to work. And because I eat reasonably well, exercise from time to time and practice good hygiene I rarely get much beyond a cold anyway.
As far as the flu is concerned I don’t know anyone who lives in fear of it. If you are a healthy person you shouldn’t.
As far as the coronavirus is concerned I wouldn’t worry either. You can’t trust the Chinese, the UN or WHO and you certainly can’t trust the MSM. Most of us wouldn’t believe these sources if they told us the sky was blue. But we’re going to believe them when it comes to this? The level of hype in comparison to the level of infection doesn’t add up all by itself. For that matter – if they tell us 100 people in a city have the virus how do you even know if it’s true?

A little perspective??? The US reported “flu” deaths are actually “flu and pneumonia” deaths. Most of those are pneumonia deaths that have nothing to do with the flu. The flu itself normally kills less than a thousand people each year in the US. I don’t know if the data from other countries includes things other than the flu, but all countries lie to us. With the coronavirus we just don’t know yet if they’re lying to the high side or the low side. Kinda depends on how they’re planning on using this “crisis” to manipulate the people. But a (potential) 2% fatality rate is MUCH higher than the flu (about 0.03%) and a (potential) infection rate at up to 81% as we saw in a previous TBP post is astronomically higher than the flu. This coronavirus outbreak is just getting started so comparing it to a virus that has been around for years is just stupid.
We don’t know. Panicking isn’t going to help but neither is presenting nonsensical “data” to “prove” that this is no big deal. That just makes you look like an ass.

Listen, there’s lots to be concerned about. Jim writes about it regularly. The debt is a huge issue and for so long as we live in this *fiction* it can destroy us. But for the past four years there has been an endless stream of emergencies produced and promoted by both the mainstream and ‘alternative’ medias as an attempt to get us to panic/stampede.
We can speculate as to why. My guess is that the ones who are really panicking are the ones who are losing control. They need us to panic along with them in order to get control back.

Every major nation on earth is creating dangerous and deadly viruses in preparation for biological warfare. The high likelihood that one could escape is quite real. From what I got from this report, those affected are being treated with antibiotics, which is actually treating the TB, so whether they’re “cured” or whether the symptoms become less pronounced, I have no idea since I’m not a physician. But doctors must suspect something, if antibiotics are being used successfully. Antibiotics are ineffective against viruses.
By the way, I’ve actually sent this article to Trump’s White House contact. Don’t know if he’ll every see it or hear about it, but I figured it was worth a try. He needs to get the CDC and the other alphabet agencies on the ball as to finding out what this really is.

Just got back from town. The Clinic at the hospital was full of young mothers with young kids and the rest were older than me but nobody mention corona virus.
Earlier at Walmart shelves were stocked with TP and paper towels but no bleach which got my attention because when I got a 1/2 gal on Sunday the shelves were fully stocked. Nobod was buying large amounts of other food or dry goods while I was there.. It’s food stamp time so if it was going to be a hectic panic it should have started.
i went to sam’s today & they were mostly well stocked but there were definitely people prepping–
the only thing i noticed they were completely out of was alcohol & peroxide,not a single bottle of either —

St. George, UT Costco sold out of tp and bottle water within a couple of hours after opening Sunday morning. Friend that works at Henderson, NV Costco said the same thing happened at the Costco he works at.

When a real panic starts, you won’t be able to find TP in the gas station restrooms. Somebody would have stolen the rolls.
During the first year of our association with the Family of Families group in OKC, I felt a bit “left behind” and got serious about the TP storage. It became almost an obsession, as I shared here years ago. It was a bit weird packing glassware and furniture cushioned in the UHAUL with big packs of TP and paper towels and in hindsight, it was a bit neurotic to insist on all that TP moving with us.
But, what I was going to say was that we stayed in a hotel during the trip that time, with me driving the truck and trailer and my husband driving the UHAUL. He left first that morning from Joplin and when I got into the truck, there was a maid’s cart untended beside it, so I grabbed a couple dozen rolls of toilet paper and hauled ass.
When we stopped for lunch and my husband saw all those single wrapped TP rolls all over the passenger’s side of the truck, he said it looked like I was driving the getaway car from robbing a public bathroom.
I bet that maid watches her cart a little better now.
