As my dad said, the only interaction with the federal government was waving at the mailman as he went by.
People for the most part in those days had a strong Christian faith, strong family group, integrity, self respect and sense of right and wrong. My folks were both depression people. My mother, then 16yrs old, and one of her older brothers raised 11 other siblings when their parents died in the depression. My father fished for a living at the age of 18 to help his family make it through those difficult years. Today most want it for nothing. Not all but, a good share think it is due them. There are hard times close at hand, it will separate the men from the boys and women from the girls I have a feeling.

From 1752 to 1860 the average days pay in the US went from $0.34 to $1.00. During that same time DEFLATION increased 34%.
In today’s dollars that’s like a $20,000 annual salary rose to $60,000 with NO inflation. This was a real 3X increase in purchasing power.
The FED has been the most destructive force this country has suffered.
Today, their GOAL is the destruction of 2% of our purchasing power every year, year in and year out. Deflation (our costs going down) is seen by them as worse than an Ebola pandemic. And much of the increase in purchasing power over those years prior to the creation of the Fed, came from increases in productivity thanks to both innovation and industrialization. Today, EVERY increase in productivity is STOLEN via the hidden tax of inflation. That is why no matter how hard the economy works, only those with access to the money first (government and government contractors/banks) get richer.

I think you are half right. If you are correct, how come people can still get degrees and financially succeed in careers and/or owning businesses?
Taxation by a governance is simply, an extortion/protection racket. Any other individual engaged in such activity would be tared and feathered or worse. The only reason they are not is simple. TPTB hire thugs i.e., IRS, FBI, BATFE, HLS, DEA, US Marshall, State and Local cops to keep them safe from retribution. All of this is done with the money they extort from john Q public.

Well, the big railroads were also helped tremendously by the massive tariffs imposed on the south by the federal government and the seizure of lands on behalf of the big railroads by government troops. Plenty of great smaller railroads were successful all on their own until the ICC was created in the late 1800s specifically to destroy them in favor of the big guys as always.
Everything else, 100%. Private enterprise can deliver EVERYTHING the government can, and better. And more importantly, with the consumer paying for the product/service directly, THEY decide what they want and not bought and paid for politicians. Government is just people after all (with no accountability, no need to earn the money they steal, and no requirement to respect the rights of others).
In Canada we’re now having an average of 43% of our incomes taken by the government in taxes. And don’t tell me it’s for ‘free’ health care; one could easily pay for their own health care if they weren’t stealing so much in taxes from us, (except paying for your own health care is also illegal up here, unless you’re a famous athlete or other elite).
No one ever asks the question ‘how much of the fruits of my labour do you think you’re entitled to?’. In Canada, it appears government’s answer is ‘all of it’ and then sneer that ‘you’ll accept what we let you keep and you’ll like it.’
Same in the US. The sheep just aren’t smart enough to figure out that this is the TRUTH of the relationship. At what level does it STOP being slavery to the government?

But nearly every elected republican and democrat in Congress and the White House since, has supported the crime spree 100%. They too deserved/deserve the gallows or worse.
The “Bonus Army” showed up in DC to collect on their promissory notes and were routed by Army troops led by MacArthur and Patton. Their failure was showing up for a peaceful protest and not coming with arms.
