The “Just Comply” thread has a picture of a stadium filled Nazi Germans giving the Heil Hitler salute. The purpose of the post was not to make a commentary about Germans and Nazis per se, but rather that any large group of people can be brainwashed. In this case, about COVID.
Of course, a significant portion of the commentary DID focus on Germany, Hitler, and NAZIs. Many here would have been disappointed had it not. Some of the comments were actually good.
But, then came two of the most fucking ignorant and goddamned clueless pictures and associated commentary that may have ever been posted here on TBP.

I am so goddamned sick and tired of people whose knowledge of WWII, and specifically Hitler, comes from reading books or trolling the internet, and then they purport themselves to be some kind of expert — and even more ridicules that they have knowledge hidden from the masses. Trust me, they say, everything you think you know is propaganda, only I have the truth.
My father, who died two years ago, would have been 95 last week. My mom is still alive. Both lived under Hitler. Dad was even (forcibly) drafted into the German Wehrmacht.
I printed out the two pictures and the commentary. I didn’t add any of my own comments, or any background as to where the pics came from, or who made the comment. I simply showed them to her, and asked her what she thinks. She narrowed her eyes, looked at me with some degree of horror, and this is what my Austrian mother said;
“What an asshole! What kind of idiot would say such a thing!”
And that was the end of that. But, she was right. Here are the facts.
1)– First of all, WHEN were those two pictures taken?? Before the war, during the war, or after the war? It makes a huge difference.

2)— My mom hated Hitler BEFORE the war. I can promise you this, my dad absolutely hated Hitler BEFORE the war.
There were a lot of people who hated Hitler before the war started. Both my parents lived in small German-populated villages. This is what they told me … that like patriotic Americans today, they just wanted to be left alone.
I don’t give a flying fuck how many pictures of filled stadiums y’all can find. Maybe it was a lot of Germans, maybe not. But, how in the fuck do I really know? I wasn’t there. I can’t go by the anecdotal evidence of my parents. But, same holds true for you. You weren’t there. How do you really know most of the German population loved Hitler? You don’t! Talk about serendipity … my mom and I just watched this 2017 movie this past Sunday. Really. It’s titled “A Hidden Life“. Filmed in Austria it’s an absolutely stunning visual masterpiece. (The production designer, Sebastian Krawinkel, also worked on “V for Vendetta“.)
It’s a true story about Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer and devout Catholic who refused to fight in World War II for the Nazi regime, and paid the highest price (with his life) for his conscientious objection.
There a fantastic write-up about this wonderful movie (here). . It truly is worth reading.

My grandfather was born in Berlin in 1912, what little he spoke of it before they came to America was not positive. They came in the mid to late 20’s when Hitler was starting the nightmare that became WWII. They could see the writing on the wall then, and left for America with nothing. They survived by going into cafe’s and asking for a cup of hot water and using ketchup to make soup and eating the crackers that were left on the table back in the day. My grandfather was eternally grateful to be in this country and I never heard him speak a word of German as long as he lived. He had six brothers, and as far as I know, none of them lived through the war. Too bad there has been a couple of generations that were not taught and real history, therefore doomed to repeat it.

It turned him against God and left him very cynical about the nature of man and just what sort of evil USA government was capable of. The bombing squadrons were told that Dresden was a heavily fortified and garrisoned munitions manufacturing town that had to be taken out to win the war. Somehow he found out later that it was all lies and that the people they bombed were women and children refugees.
I was totally unaware of the bombing of Dresden until he told me about it. He said they first fire bombed the interior of the town to draw in the fire brigades, then bombed the perimeter to trap all the people inside the burning inferno. He said it was a like hell on earth with the towering tornado of flames reaching a thousand feet or more. But hey, Hitler did some bad things too.

My neighbor for 10 years was a german student drafted into the Sub service. His U-boat was sunk late in the war a few hundred miles off NYC where he was held till wars end. He was able to stay here and moved to the Poconos near Stroudsburg Pa.. He was a sophmore at the time and typical of the youth then. He was protesting the war and handing out flyers in town. An officer came around to the college and asked them to please quit till the end of the war because it might hurt morale of the troops on the front. That was it, nothing more. He was never afraid of being harmed and didn’t even get drafted until he finished the year in college. He said there were lots of shortages everywhere but he never saw anyone suffering or full of hatred for Hitler.

After being totally defeated in WW2 the German people were occupied by an avenging army. Starting in 1945 you couldn’t find anyone in Germany who had been a Nazi or a Nazi supporter. I just spent the better part of three days slaughtering, butchering and putting away three hogs for people to eat. I dislike the slaughter part- it’s dangerous to climb in with an animal that weighs hundreds of pounds and have to stick a knife into its throat and it’s even harder to do it to something I have cared for every day of its life leading up to that moment so there’s that part to reconcile.
When it’s over, however, there is enough to nourish a family and friends for a very long time. That makes the all the work, the risk, and the unpleasantness worth it.
Arguing over the past, one in which we took no part, seems to me to be a form of tail-chasing. You want to learn from history? Live your life purposefully because you are a part of it, every moment of your life. This is our opportunity to either do the right thing or to repeat the mistakes of the past. Every action, every word, every thought adds up to something. That can be for the good or it can be meaningless, it can cause pain and unhappiness or it can bring joy and contentment.
Unlike many of the people who post here I have the unique good fortune to know quite a few of you personally, to have worked together, eaten meals with one another, talked and laughed over drinks and food and I have found exactly what I was looking for in each one- sincerity, curiosity, intelligence and decency. When I read these kinds of threads it makes me wish that all of you could do the same thing and that’s why we always open up the farm every 4th of July in the hopes that more of you come together and meet each other and learn that for as much as we might disagree on some things- especially those things we really don’t know- we are all very similar in many ways.
I guess that’s all I’ve got to add to this thread except that right now I am drinking a cup of coffee- made from beans one of the posters sent me, in Stucky’s Father’s mug. And I feel nothing but the deep satisfaction that it was made possible by choosing the right words, at the right time, to the right people.

Your concept is a fine one. Perhaps part of the problem is that the folks who wreaked hell on earth back then are still around, lurking, and repeating what they did back then. I was elected at our mini farm to shoot the hog, then cut the big vessels in the neck, then winch them up, upside dowm. If you aim well, it turns them off like a switch. I didn’t enjoy it either. However, our pigs had great lives (for captive pigs), plenty of run room, great food, love, kind words, body rubs, companionship, a pig palace. When it was time, there was no trauma or drama, just bam, lights out. Only screwed up once, a quick follow up shot fixed it. I envy your situation Hard Farmer. I hope there is enough civilization left for another 4th of July gathering this next year, it’s a bucket list item for me.
