Great interview. I did some looking for the essays Mike Wallace mentioned. Couldn’t find them, but here is a collection of some of his others.

Eternal truths which continue to cycle through the generations. That was filmed in the middle 1950s yet is as true today as it ever was.

By the way, Mike Wallace was so much better a reporter than his son that any kind of comparison is just not possible.

Mike had good roots as a journalist before he succumbed to the gotcha “journalism” that 60 minutes was known for. During B J Clinton’s administration, Gotcha Journalism added “cover your friends” to its repertoire and is now attack your enemies and cover for your friends. This is all that Chris knows.

One of my all time favorites was Tim Russert. Tim worked for Tip O’Neil as a youngster, so you know he leaned leftward, but it was not to be found in his interviews. He always asked good, fair questions of all of his interviewees.

After addressing concerns regarding the dangers of propaganda, he says (at the 12:53 mark): “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance“. Then, from the 13-minute to the 15:29 mark, he speaks about political candidates being merchandised and technology being used for “subliminal projection” in order for people to be persuaded to vote for political candidates “below the level of choice and reason”.

Interesting, no?

And later in the vid he discusses the new “group morality/ethic” where the group is somehow considered more valuable than the individual and how this is at odds with what is known about genetics – that every human being is unique. He then says education is important in order to avoid the verbal “booby-traps” (i.e. political correctness?) that people are always falling into. Next, Huxley agrees with Wallace’s statement that he is a “prophet of decentralization”.

A fascinating interview. Thanks for posting

Was a particularly insightful take on human behavior. I love how Wallace was so taken aback by his contentions concerning America, i.e. it can’t happen here.

He was shocked that Huxley saw through him.

Wow, I thought almost that exact same thing when I watched it, like he’d been caught. I don’t think even Wallace noticed his own reaction.

Lol

When Wallace asked Huxley if democracy/freedom was really any better than Marxism (because after all, they science, too, ya know?), Huxley astutely pointed out how the scientists in communist countries were actually given more liberty (to achieve, produce, succeed) as long as they stayed out of politics. That was brilliant. Anyone who was less intelligent, observant, and logical would have missed the opportunity to have discerned and drawn that line of distinction.

In fact, I found myself recalling the exchange this morning while reading this article (below) and watching the video therein. The vid shows a gal just doing her thing while the politics continues by other means in the background.

Behold the seemingly ironic symbolism while trying not to smile:

“The vid shows a gal just doing her thing while the politics continues by other means in the background.”

That sentence is a keeper if you move the words around-

…while politics by other means continues in the background.

I expect we’ll be seeing it in the next article.

Actually, I do believe I prefer your version. Also, for your information, the aphorism we are discussing is another fine example of ripples in the pond.

I was not familiar with Carl von Clausewitz until I saw a quote you posted here months ago. In doing some research, it appears he was influenced by his contemporary Georg Hegel, the father of the Hegelian Dialectic. In fact, the two men died within two days of each other in November 1831.

Anyway, it was just another piece of the puzzle or, rather, brick in the bridge connecting politics to philosophy. So, thanks for that

Unc- I like (I may not get it exact) this one from Thomas Sowell:

History is the record of politicians stealing the blood and treasure of humanity.

War is the biggest tool for theft in their toolbox.

An apt description regarding the parasitical nature of politicians, for sure. Thanks, B

Wallace, (surname was originally Wallik) born on May 9, 1918, in Brookline, Massachusetts to Russian Jewish immigrant parents. He identified as a Jew and claimed it was his ethnicity ,instead of religion, throughout his life.

Nixon wanted Wallace for Press Sec. Fox News said, “He didn’t fit the stereotype of the Eastern liberal journalist.”

He was asked if he understood why people feel disaffection toward the mainstream media. “They think they’re wide-eyed commie liberals,” Wallace said. A notion he dismissed as “damned foolishness”.

What a POS.
