THIS DAY IN HISTORY – War in Iraq begins – 2003

Via History.com

On March 19, 2003, the United States, along with coalition forces primarily from the United Kingdom, initiates war on Iraq. Just after explosions began to rock Baghdad, Iraq’s capital, U.S. President George W. Bush announced in a televised address, “At this hour, American and coalition forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Iraq, to free its people and to defend the world from grave danger.” President Bush and his advisors built much of their case for war on the idea that Iraq, under dictator Saddam Hussein, possessed or was in the process of building weapons of mass destruction.

Hostilities began about 90 minutes after the U.S.-imposed deadline for Saddam Hussein to leave Iraq or face war passed. The first targets, which Bush said were “of military importance,” were hit with Tomahawk cruise missiles from U.S. fighter-bombers and warships stationed in the Persian Gulf. In response to the attacks, Republic of Iraq radio in Baghdad announced, “the evil ones, the enemies of God, the homeland and humanity, have committed the stupidity of aggression against our homeland and people.”

Though Saddam Hussein had declared in early March 2003 that, “it is without doubt that the faithful will be victorious against aggression,” he went into hiding soon after the American invasion, speaking to his people only through an occasional audiotape. Coalition forces were able to topple his regime and capture Iraq’s major cities in just three weeks, sustaining few casualties.

President Bush declared the end of major combat operations on May 1, 2003. Despite the defeat of conventional military forces in Iraq, an insurgency has continued an intense guerrilla war in the nation in the years since military victory was announced, resulting in thousands of coalition military, insurgent and civilian deaths.

After an intense manhunt, U.S. soldiers found Saddam Hussein hiding in a six-to-eight-foot deep hole, nine miles outside his hometown of Tikrit. He did not resist and was uninjured during the arrest. A soldier at the scene described him as “a man resigned to his fate.” Hussein was arrested and began trial for crimes against his people, including mass killings, in October 2005.

In June 2004, the provisional government in place since soon after Saddam’s ouster transferred power to the Iraqi Interim Government. In January 2005, the Iraqi people elected a 275-member Iraqi National Assembly. A new constitution for the country was ratified that October. On November 6, 2006, Saddam Hussein was found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging. After an unsuccessful appeal, he was executed on December 30, 2006.

No weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq. The U.S. declared an end to the war in Iraq on December 15, 2011, nearly ten years after the fighting began.

I always come back to where W, evil bastard that he is, was rejecting the advice of his old man to stop the madness before it began. When asked by the press why he didn’t follow his father’s advice he responded that he was following the advice of ‘a higher father’. God wanted him to slaughter innocent and defenseless people who posed NO threat to Americans. It floored me. Surly religious people would be disgusted by this blasphemy. Nope. Not a word. It was all good. It confirmed in my mind that if there actually is a God he’s going to understand why I’ll have nothing to do with organized religion. Nothing.

I’m looking forward to Bush (The Dumb One) to meet another father ….. Father Time. The Dumb One is only 74 so, we may have to wait a few years to celebrate the death of this monster.

But,I want to ask you a serious question, CCRider. What were you’re feelings about bombing Iraq at the time?

Weren’t you FOR it? I know I was. IIRC, pretty much the entire country was united about it .. Dems, Repubs, White & Black, and everything in between. Bomb those fucken mooslims back to the Stone Age.They MUST pay the price! Hooorah!! Yeah, it was like that.

So, why did you call me a Neocon????

Hahaha. Remember that, Jim? In case you don’t recall my response …. I asked what a neocon was!! Really. What a dumbass I was back then. Hilarious.

Once I found out what it was, I think a little shitfest ensued, I can’t remember exactly.

The good old days, Jim.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun ….

I supported Ron Paul’s campaigns going back to the 1970s. I served on his advisory board in both his presidential runs-but only because I maxed the donation amount. On my wall is a letter from Murray Rothbard from October 1981. I have an autographed copy of Atlas Shrugged. Finally, born in 1949 I grew up in Connecticut where Prescott Bush was a long-time senator. Most people have no idea how evil the Bush’s were. It’s old Yankee pedigree that money and power are god-like. No, I did not support that war at the time.

Not me. I knew it was bullshit from the gitgo. I tried to voice that to others but it was useless trying. FTR, I’m former army and was a tank gunner in the gulf war. Lots of bullshit then for those willing to see or in my case, unable to look away.

Yes, on occasion. We used Sabot (depleted uranium) and Heat (high explosive, anti-tank). Bradley’s also used it, I believe? They divided our units at the company level to have a mix of M1s, Bradley’s, and infantry.

I was firmly against it, and it still DISGUSTS me that the USA invaded another country on false pretenses in order to profit evil people and corporations. Every evil thing happening to the country now is retribution for the EVIL acts of the bush administration.

The Iraqis pulled a rope a dope on US military and are still in the fight 18 years later. US military is getting real tired and the Iraqis will still be standing when the USA goes home.

Bringing Them Democracy (TM) takes as long as it takes ( just like in Shitholistan) and lots of taxpayer shekels to get it right so don’t rush the heroic and jeenyuss gubbermint- militree expurts, serf.

And, oh, by the way, the “war” in Iraq actually began with Sr Bush’s Desert Shield in 18 January 1991. That would make the NeoCon Southwest Asia programme – to make the world safe for the B3rg*/Evil Fuckers – a more than 30 year freedom-loving endeavour.

This reminds me of climate change. I had a professor put up data that supported the opposite what they were cooncluding. Wen called out it was usual Jewish pilpul.

The data says clearly the vaccine is more dangerous than the virus and mask do not DO NOT control the spread of respiratory infection. that won’t stop them from drawing conclusion completely divorced from the data.

The absolute low point of American history, the day our former country decided to believe George W. Bush and the other lying neocons. All of his administration deserves to be lined up in front of a firing squad.

I really shouldn’t comment on this thread because NOTHING pisses me off more than the retards who fell for the deception of the George W. Fucking Bush administration. The morons who voted for Biden pale in comparison to the brain dead traitors who voted for GWB…twice.
