THIS DAY IN HISTORY – Texas enters the Union – 1845

Via History.com

Six months after the congress of the Republic of Texas accepts U.S. annexation of the territory, Texas is admitted into the United States as the 28th state.

After gaining independence from Spain in the 1820s, Mexico welcomed foreign settlers to sparsely populated Texas, and a large group of Americans led by Stephen F. Austin settled along the Brazos River. The Americans soon outnumbered the resident Mexicans, and by the 1830s attempts by the Mexican government to regulate these semi-autonomous American communities led to rebellion. In March 1836, in the midst of armed conflict with the Mexican government, Texas declared its independence from Mexico.

The Texas volunteers initially suffered defeat against the forces of Mexican General Santa Anna—the Alamo fell and Sam Houston’s troops were forced into an eastward retreat. However, in late April, Houston’s troops surprised a Mexican force at San Jacinto, and Santa Anna was captured, bringing an end to Mexico’s efforts to subdue Texas.

The citizens of the independent Republic of Texas elected Sam Houston president but also endorsed the entrance of Texas into the Union. The likelihood of Texas joining the Union as a slave state delayed any formal action by the U.S. Congress for more than a decade. In 1844, Congress finally agreed to annex the territory of Texas. On December 29, 1845, Texas entered the United States as a slave state, broadening the irrepressible differences in the United States over the issue of slavery and setting off the Mexican-American War.

As a foreigner ( I am Canadian) I do not have a depth of knowledge about American politics. Nevertheless given the internationally known independance Texans have, I wonder how long before they look at secession once again as a means of escaping Biden America

If you’ve ever been to Austin , you’ll know why secession, at this point, is impossible.

“I wonder how long before they look at secession once again as a means of escaping Biden America.”

Secession will never happen. Every time dems get in the white house, at least dating back to 2008, Texans begin talking about secession. After the 2020 election cycle “Texit” signs began to appear, Texit following the lead of Brexit. One reason among many that Texas will never secede is Texas has mucho people making mucho amounts of $$$ off federal government whether employed by the fed or sucking the fed tit. Many very “proud” native Texan enjoy those free handouts from the fed (USDA etc) . These folks subscribe to dangling on the government tit from cradle to grave. Off topic, it never ceases to amaze me how the tit danglers have voted republiCon since the old days when many Texans voted demonrat.

I’m in rural Texas. I recall a small number of “Texit” signs, leaflets, etc. shortly after BiteMe took office. I see none around my area now. It’s just blowhard ideas.

Texas has a man that goes by Larry Secede Kilgore. Somewhere along the line Larry “officially” changed his middle name to “Secede”. Larry ran on the republicOn ticket in Texas gubernatorial races in 2006, 2014 and 2018 . He also ran for U.S. Senate in 2008.

Larry was outspoken about homosexuality, abortions etc. which I agree are Biblical abominations. Larry was of the mindset women that had abortions should receive the death penalty. Homosexuality and adultery, death penalty. Also floggings for vulgar language.

Larry would certainly never have fit in with Log Cabin Republicans. lol

H-E-B.

Stands for Herbert Edward BUTT!!! I shit you not.

Ask anyone who shops at H-E-B. No need of Trader Joe’s. Plus which, conservatives outnumber leftists 5 to 1 at any H-E-B I’ve ever set foot inside of.

And they never run out of red meat, beer, or beef jerky.

Five? Please…and… you, little Joisey boy, have no room to talk. I’ve seen the bucktoothed rodent and idiot you all elected governor and I’ve see what all you put up with to live there. I have friends from Jersey who ran away as fast as their feet would carry them.
Trader Joes can’t carry a candle to HEB BTW.

Overpriced crap??

Hardly! But, you know what they say about opinions.

TJ (and Aldi’s) is a German headquartered store. Hence, they carry a fair amount of products from Germany. Good healthy stuff. Like cookies, cake, cheese and bratwurst … which are quite hard to find “elsewhere”.

American Limburger is pure crap. Just one company in America makes it. Awesome German Limburger has that genuine stinky feet smell …. just how it ought to be.

Texas cities are all mostly democrat enclaves with the usual misery and filth that comes with democrats in charge. The entire USSA is a democrat enclave these days.

I was never able to gain adequate support on a Red River Wall. I’s sort of like people that say there should be term limits except if their U.S. Rep is Louie Gohmert, oh, we need to keep Louie. Chuckle, chuckle, suddenly no support.

Seeing as how many Texas music artists did hang around Nashville, USA, Texas history is incomplete without mentioning Ray Wylie Hubbard , the 3rd father of Texas or Willie Nelson, the 2nd father of Texas. I use to opine Willie was actually the 1st father of Texas regardless Moses and Stephen F. Austin.
