I’ll take the redneck any day, the mutual funds guy is toast. That redneck will flourish in that situation as will the Amish.

BL, I got a good laugh* out of my very prim and prudish (other) neighbor further uphill than Geneva. Nice people with three children, but my son told me he thought those kids were too damn wholesome for their own good after we hosted them with other visiting friends for a July 4th festival that first year we were here. (2015)

Well, it is almost seven years later and the oldest boy is a volunteer fireman and works full time as a construction worker. A LOT of homes and barns going up along the backroads. As long as no one violates NOPIS (no other people in sight), we are fine and dandyish. The middle boy is obviously too smart to visit with me, but he’s 17 now. The young girl comes to my home one day a week and I pay her to clean my downstairs and make it look nice. Her mother is an amazingly industrious person who raised three very industrious and well-mannered children.

My son appears to be wrong. They are NOT too wholesome for their own good.

*To get directly to the joke, jump here.
So, I’ve been giving those kids a rabbit now and again for years, don’t you know? The mother doesn’t like pet animals around the house that might eat garden plants or flowers and no matter how well you think you’ve fenced a bunny in, they can usually dig their way out unless you have the right caging. And, domestic bunnies don’t head for the woods. They head for the garden.

I gave her daughter “another” bunny to be a mate for Thumper, the last rabbit I sent her home with. I asked her mother if she liked the new bunny bonus I sent home and she replied “Not real happy with the bunny.”

So, I sent her a picture of a frozen rabbit and told her not all of them make it out of here alive. She laughed, her daughter came worked for a couple hours and went home with a 20 dollar bill and a 5-lb frozen rabbit.

Mags- I’m glad you brought the building boom up today. Obviously, the economy is really going gang busters as there are at least 15 new construction homes within a two mile radius of my doomstead. These are mostly large, very expensive houses (very expensive in BFE would be very, very expensive in the northern states or out west). If this keeps up, I will be looking to sell and get further into unoccupied territory.

What will you do if you lose your solitude? All of the work you and Nick put into your farm will be lost if it gets too crowded. My daughter’s mini farm is in the middle of suburbia now.

Thankfully that 9 acre lot next to us sold to a young 19 yr guy who installs septic systems. Is building his own home.

We are situated 20 miles from anywhere…90 to St Louis.

We hope we get ignored.

As soon as the top 10% run out of money, the party is over, because nobody else has any to spend. There are a lot of expensive houses going up, but how many are between 2-300k?

Btw, how come white people don’t burn cities down over the word “Rednecks”?

Too busy getting a red neck while working to support the welfare queens and crackheads that are burning down cities because armed, child-molesting, girlfriend-beating young black men keep dying while confronting police.

Liberty,

You’ve got to see this video. It’s a video of the cashier at the grocery store I go to at least 3 times per week. He’s a black guy that knows 17 languages. He lives in a ghetto in DC but busses all the way out where I live because he knows he won’t get held up at gun point at work here. Smart guy, huh? I make sure to get in his line every time I shop. He’s got a great attitude.

There a a few good black men still out there,,, I know about three black guys in my limited circle that I would trust my life to and my families lives to. I know that if it came down to them having to defend my family from harm… They would unhesitatingly do so…

I have witnessed them stepping forward even when not asked or really required, but they did so out of concern. I would do the same for them in a heartbeat as well.

Didn’t you just call me low IQ white trash yesterday? I have not known too many good black people. I KNOW they exist but, I haven’t known many. I’m from the school that says stick to your kind because, like it or not, if/when TSHTF, race will be your uniform. Jusy my opinion.

Not to my knowledge. Unless you think calling into question your ‘critical’ thinking skills is the same as low IQ white trash.

As long as he isn’t using an anti-freeze coated radiator as the condenser, I’m good with the redneck sharing as much as he wants with me. And even if he is using it, I’ll hang close until he croaks as he probably has some good stuff.

There won’t be enough antifreeze in the radiator to make a difference.
It is miscible with alcohol, and will clean out with the methyl alcohol drawn off at the beginning of the first batch.
He won’t croak.
But he will trade some good stuff for your daughter.

Methyl is deadly.

Maybe you meant ethyl?

Lmao you better stick with the mutual fund fellow.

No.
I meant methyl.
Alcohol distillations produce methyl alcohol at the beginning and end of the process.
This is discarded.
The ethyl alcohol produced in between is what is saved to drink.
If the methyl is not removed, you end up with the moonshine that can cause blindness, or worse.
The methyl drawn off at the start of the first batch will clean out any of the latent antifreeze (which also will cause blindness or death, depending on amount consumed).

Keep laughing, big boy.
Just don’t offer me anything from your still.

Yes. It is because of the different boiling points that is related to their molecular size and structure. Methyl is smaller so it has fewer place to interact with neighbors to keep it in place and it evaporates first in the distillation. Other factors affect boiling points, so you can’t always rely on size, but that relates to those points of interaction I mentioned.

I’m surrounded and supported by smart, handy “rednecks”.

Unfortunately, several took the jab (persuaded by their doctors), so I’m worried I’ll lose them. Sooner rather than later.

Most so-called “rednecks are just simple and fairly intelligent men and women who don’t want other people or the Government messing in their business. They have a wide array of skills, often learned through practical experience handed down from parents to the children, and they aren’t afraid to fight, push come to shove, or to put a “Revenuer” off in a shallow grave somewhere far into the hills.

They’re just regular folks. Go to Monteagle Mountain in Tennessee. You’ll see what I mean, especially when You see the thriving — now legal — moonshine business that is running throughout the area.

This picture, of course, represents the stereotypical image that many Americans have in their mind’s eye; but the people of the South look similar to any other average, ordinary American. If their necks are red, it comes from many long hours of hard work on the back forty acres or some other semi-skilled career without removing their shirts for various reasons, such as steel worker, carpenter, hot-mix roofing ect. The bad rap and negative connotation that has caused some to use “redneck” as a pejorative comes from the fact that these usually polite and fun loving folks will whip your ass, if you get out of line in any serious manner with them or their family members, or damage or try to take something of theirs without recompense or proper compensation, as it should be.

The “spare parts from a ’67 Thunderbird” leaves me a little leery. I would rather my whiskey (not whisky) not go through a used radiator.

I though alcohol disinfects. What’s the problem here? Plus I’d bet the alcohol content would more than sufficient.

Hey… I’ve raised some knotty looking carrots but this one was my favorite.

I know so many people who resemble that guy I’m not going to comment. There are some days, you know, that so do I.

By the way, my father knew a few people in the 1930s who cooked a little ‘shine now and then. He told stories about watching old codgers pull dead rats and snakes out of their mash before getting ready to cook it off. Some of them were “plumb rotten” he’d say, but since they were gonna cook it off, nobody worried about germs. And, I’m betting nobody who ever drank any homebrew around here died of germs either.

Alcohol poisoning, maybe. Germs? No.

Dad actually had an old still he sat up at local carnivals and, to my mother’s consternation, sat there looking the part. After another twenty years of it, she gave in and literally jumped on the bandwagon.

So, I’d rather leave it there when Dad was the Grand Marshall of the Community Day Parade.

About the carrot? LOL… why do you think it is my favorite!

Am kidding, but I get your drift. It reminded me of a weird thing displayed at a weird “girls only” lingerie and toys gathering I went to be accident shortly after joining the USAF. I literally was a hick from sticksville and thought it was like a tupperware party with sexxy nightgowns when one of the guys handed me an invitation to his wife’s “Fun Party” on Saturday.

When I walked into my friend’s home and met his wife and her friends, I noticed an older, trim woman arranging what appeared to be a table full of rubber penises and other strange devices I’d rather not discuss in a public way today. (One was called “The Animal” and was actually passed around the assembled women and there was a little vibrating animal where it really should not have been! )

A co-worker I’d invited (who was looking at me weird as soon as we walked in — I’d told her it was a lingerie party and that I hoped to buy a nice flannel nightgown) and I sat at the very end of the back row. We managed to collect all the porn toy goodies passed around by the most non-tupperware-like lady I’d ever seen up to then. When she described how to use ben wa balls to enhance “the experience”, my co-worker leaned over and asked me if I thought the saleslady had a couple up her ass right then. We both cracked up and got really dirty looks from the porn-toy saleslady.

After she finished the demonstration, she went into the back bedroom to await those with orders. My friend and I beat feet and hit the street.

The next week, at the office, I told everyone that Rich’s wife held a giant dildo party that Saturday.

All the guys in the office high-fived him.

I was disgusted. It was pretty early in my Air Force years.

I’ve got about 40# of old diving weights that might be worth something some day. Better put them is a safer place than they are now, even though nobody has bothered them in the 15 years they have been hiding in plain sight.
