Dr. Rachel Levine named among Women of the Year by USA Today
Former Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine, who coordinated the commonwealth’s initial response to the coronavirus pandemic before being appointed to the Biden administration, has been named among the Women of the Year by USA Today.
Levine, the U.S. assistant secretary for health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the head of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps., is the nation’s highest ranking transgender official.
“I really feel that everything I’ve ever done, whether it was in academic medicine, in education, in clinical research, seeing my patients in my role in public health, in Pennsylvania and now my role nationally has all led to this moment in terms of helping the nation through this greatest public health crisis that we have faced in over a hundred years,” Levine told the national news outlet.
The 64-year-old trained pediatrician spent years leading Pennsylvania’s health department and gained a higher profile with her work coordinating the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Biden brought Levine into her high-ranking role in his administration in January 2021 with her nomination to the federal post. The U.S. Senate confirmed her nomination to the federal post in March last year.
A four-star admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, Levine becomes the nation’s first openly transgender four-star officer across any of the uniformed services of the United States. She leads a group of 6,000 uniformed public health officers, and is the first female officer to lead the corps.
Levine, who has spent her professional life in medicine, gained national attention and that of the White House as she navigated the politically-charged atmosphere in 2020 surrounding COVID-19. As secretary of health for the commonwealth at the height of the pandemic, Levine largely faced criticism about actions related to nursing homes and the level of COVID-19 testing in the state.
Levine also fended off hateful, transphobic attacks both at the state and national level, but has maintained a poised reaction at every pace: “I have no room in my heart for hatred and, frankly, I do not have time for intolerance,” she said last year in the wake of verbal assaults.

When I was recuperating from my fall out of the tree a few years back I started to go through some of my old portfolios and found a portrait Greer had done of me and contacted Paul Monroe- a guy she lived and ran a gallery with- and offered to send it to him for his collection of her work. We had a really interesting conversation where he said Greer was just gay, but tried to become a woman because it was less shameful than to be identified as a homosexual. I went to the YMCA today. Cardio-only day. Went to the hot tub afterward. There was a “trans woman” in the hot tub. Probably 70 years old. White. Maybe 6’2″. (Why are they always over six feet tall?) Everybody gets what they get.
That includes getting gratification delayed, or desperately sought.
And that includes too the everybodys that want to get everybody, or just more, in whatever ways. “Social” animalia. Libido dominandi. You like me!– right now!, you like me! Greed is good. Especially with melty marshmallow cream on top.
