If you could master one skill you don’t have right now, what would it be?

I would like to play the piano or violin well, but I don´t want to spend years practicing. Therefore, by definition, I do not want it badly enough.
I know that I could do better listening to people and interrupting them less.
Socialite: Mr. Heifitz, I’d give my life to be able to play like you.
Heifitz: Madam, that’s exactly what I did.
The throat squeeze thing that Darth Vader uses. Seems like that would come in handy.
If you could do it over great distance, maybe by just looking at a picture and concentrating real hard. Would finally make C-SPAN and CNN interesting.
Witticism…
maybe patience but I can’t wait for that…
Learning to play the saxophone.
I want to learn how to brew liquors. When the SHTF liquor will be a great bartering product.
When TSHTF, most will be looking for ANY liquor, even marginal stuff. And don’t forget, grain, etc. is going to be very hard to come by from what I am reading.
So … brew it now while grains are somewhat available … that way it’ll be ‘aged’ by the time the SHTF …
As with any prepping, it makes no sense to decide to do it once the SHTF … by then it’s too late …
I agree. I think you can make hooch from any organic plant. POW’s were famous for their ability to make it from scraps. I’m growing a shit-load of potatoes this season. Vodka for all (with a pre1965 silver dime to buy it).
Raisin Jack was my father in law’s creation on Okinawa during WW2.
ANY plant-based starch or sugar can be broken down with heat, water, amylase, and yeast to create alcohol. This means potatoes, rice, fruit juices. Malted barley or wheat grains will become a luxury unless you know how to do the malting process with raw grains berries yourself and season them with heat.
Good beer requires a bit of pH and chemistry knowledge about water treatment, but it’s nothing beyond high school level understanding. With some basic understanding anyone can distill water, treat with basic calcium salts and add some ammonia salts or Fermaid K to help your wines or ciders out.
Plenty of information out there. It’s literally a home fermentation biology experiment where beer, wine, and cider can be done with minor effort, but the harder liquors require a bit more investment with time and distillation skills. Sometimes it’s best to team up with someone who already knows the basics before you decide to get that pot still going.
How to survive on a deserted island ALONE.

One fertile young woman all alone does not require birth control. Just saying. (If Abigail even is such a woman) Pipe dream of yours, AP. Pun intended.
It is a sad state to witness. Will post details later.
ohhh… I’d be into that…
Thanks for the fantasies, mate. You never fail to disappoint or entertain!
I may be open to both…
But I think my wife would be opposed to the second choice… I’ll ask her…
Kek!
500 yard he….
Oh never mind
Blacksmithing.
I believe this will be invaluable in the coming years.
Indeed. Have been trying to find someone to repair some wrought iron railing.
Is there a difference between ‘invaluable’ and ‘valuable’?
telekinesis
Reloading…
It’s not that hard. Just the initial investment. I did it a lot in my late teens and early 20s. Quit and started over 10 yrs later with no issues. Better trimmers and stuff now than when I started.
You guys talking about sex?
Kinda is… a lot of buildup then goes off with a bang…
My brother is a reloader — financed his oldest daughter’s wedding by selling hand loads — he says it’s not economical nowadays … and the supplies seem to be less available than bought ammo.
The curves between hand loads and factory cross back and forth with cycles. When factory gets tight and hard to supply, reload components start becoming harder to come by because it’s getting pressure from the supply side due to factories supplying to manufacturers and reloaders creating more demand.
308 now for a decent brass cased 150 grain cartridge is 80 cents. I can load it for 1/2 that using components bought 5 years ago when the same cartridge was 55 cents.
The real savings comes in when you are loading match bullets that are more exotic.
I wish I knew how to do really nice quality wood working. The stuff I see guys do on those HGTV shows. I did learn a heck of a lot of solid handyman stuff from “This Old House” and similar things. I’ve always admired those who can take a pile of stuff and make a house or beautiful furniture.
I’d love to learn how to fly a helicopter, because dammit, helicopters are cool. However, I can’t actually afford a helicopter, the fuel for the helicopter, or even the cost of helicopter flight lessons. So fuck this question. 🙁
3000 helo hours. Not a valuable skill. Wish i had farmed for 3000 hours….
My dog has an interesting skill he does when he is board. It does make me wonder.
Is it spelling?
excuse me, little miss can’t be wrong. Or do you prefer your assholiness?
Long range shooting.
Just how far? We used to train Marine Corps snipers in the outfit I was part of (back in ’67) — they started at 1,000 yards and worked out from there.
Current records for sniper shots are running 2.2 MILES — I can’t even see that far …
If you want to go beyond, say, 1,500 yards — you need high quality firearms and ammunition … if nothing else, you’ll go through a lot of ammo at the range.
A nice stock factory rifle and a good scope can be had for a couple thousand dollars now. The right ammo in the desired caliber is the real issue, as is your own personal skill level. Would love to have a Bergara rifle in 6.5mm and a choice scope, but as my eyes age, a good semi-auto shotgun should suffice.
Twenty years ago I used to have the reloading books, dies, and a cheap Lee press for my heavy-barreled .308. I have none of those now and live in an area that’s patently unfriendly to the hobby.
Influencing others.
Hypnotism.
When he counts backward from 3, you will forget your question.
3, … 2, … 1
Oh, … uh, I also need to know how to hypnotize.
To persuade people to do what’s good for them.
And
Farm labor zombies!
Deprogrammer
Was going to say ‘the ability to wake up sheeple’.
I am currently learning how to ride our Can-Am at age 70. Laugh if you want but it’s exhilarating and scary at the same time.
I’m learning how to drive a 45 ft passenger bus in rush hour NY traffic as a new form of employment. I understand how you feel, but it’s not my own life I’m worried about as this oversized POS I will drive for a living can carry scores of passengers.
I wish I could have been better at teaching Chuck Norris karate. He turned out pretty good but, still far short of the standard I had set for him. Oh well.
Alchemy.
Heavy equipment operator. I would also love to learn how to sing like a pro; play a musical instrument; build and maintain a raised garden bed.
I have no desire to awaken the sleeping masses who have no desire to awaken. Lord knows I’ve tried, and will continue if the opportunity presents itself (such as my atheist niece story I posted earlier).
Meg ,You have been doing it all your life (your mind controls your body) .Just do it SLOWLY to get the feel. Same thing ! (you CAN do it) J.P. (I Have done it, aybody can)
Hope I did not mess up. I meant in heavy equipment operation (Ican’t sing to save my life)
As far as the musical instrument goes, if you wanna play the meat harp almost any Biden appointee can help you out.
I do have the uncanny ability to smell bull shit from a mile away. So I got that one covered.
I would like to be able to be a mechanic or have good aptitude with building stuff with my hands.
Welding.
Reined cow horse and cutting competitions. Hell – just wish I had a nice quarter horse and ranch to start… but I’m a few million dollars away from that reality. Unless there’s any0ne out there that will take in a hard working 55 yo novice ranch hand…
