Manipulating Society – The Invisible Government

“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. …We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. …In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons…who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.” – Propaganda, Edward L. Bernays, 1928

What should blow your mind about those companies named is that they are subsidiaries of other, larger, companies.

If the chart showed how much the subsidiaries of the bigger companies — let’s use Netflix as an example — donated all total, it would come down to the usual suspects: BlackRock, Vanguard, Fidelity, Icahn, etc. (See here for further details: https://www.marketscreener.com/quote/stock/NETFLIX-INC-44292425/company/ )

Donations from these huge conglomerates, plus from Big Pharma, would provide a much different chart.

My understanding is that the chart is not showing donations from the company itself but rather from the employees in those companies.

…but, of course, what you say is also 100% valid and relevant.

An availability cascade is a self-reinforcing cycle that explains the development of certain kinds of collective beliefs. A novel idea or insight, usually one that seems to explain a complex process in a simple or straightforward manner, gains rapid currency in the popular discourse by its very simplicity and by its apparent insightfulness. Its rising popularity triggers a chain reaction within the social network: individuals adopt the new insight because other people within the network have adopted it, and on its face it seems plausible. The reason for this increased use and popularity of the new idea involves both the availability of the previously obscure term or idea, and the need of individuals using the term or idea to appear to be current with the stated beliefs and ideas of others, regardless of whether they in fact fully believe in the idea that they are expressing. Their need for social acceptance, and the apparent sophistication of the new insight, overwhelm their critical thinking. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metacognition

There is a radio “Programming” guide from the mid-1980’s by a man named Steven Warren (not to be confused with Steve Warren, who also wrote a radio programming guide) that touts the use of “Psycho-Seasoned Oldies” to better appeal to audiences with the oldies music they include in their playlists.

The idea is this: Say the month is October, the weather has just changed and there is a definite feel to seasonality all around. This is the time to update your oldies with songs that were popular during this exact same time of year, but decades prior. Billboard hits from 1985, 1975, and 1965 could be added during this time, for example.

Using this method of keeping music flashbacks relevant to present-day environmental (or any other seasonal event, like the World Series) or moments of cultural significance from the past, a radio station will find themselves with more listeners saying things like, “Oooh! I remember THIS song! Turn it up!” College memories, sporting event memories, memories from shared family holidays. All are easily triggered in this fasion.

Dance club deejays worth their salt know how to manipulate the dance crowd into taking a break and head to the bar for refreshments. I’ve been in the deejay booth watching this exact sort of manipulation, having been told by the deejay what he was doing.
