Belarus’ Lukashenko Visits Russian Troops, Declares “Common Cause”

Via ZeroHedge

Ever since President Vladimir Putin’s Dec.19 visit to Belarus, there have been persisting fears of a major new offensive on Ukraine being readied from the north with Belarusian army help. This as Russian heavy equipment has continued to be transferred to Belarusian territory.

“Minsk’s defence ministry says a train carrying Russian troops and equipment has arrived in Belarus,” as cited in international reports. “Belarus, who is a close Moscow ally, said it would receive more weapons and equipment from Russia on Thursday as the two boost their military cooperation.”

The two countries have been conducting joint drills of late, precisely as they were just prior to the initial major Feb.24 invasion of Ukraine. All of this is stoking fears Belarus is poised to join Russia in fighting the Ukrainians as part of the so-called ‘Union State’.

Belarus could be used as a staging post to attack Ukraine from the north. Last month Minsk condemned an incident wherein it said Belarusian anti-air defenses shot down a Ukrainian S-300 that flew across the border – though it was reportedly an ‘errant’ missile.

On Friday, Belarus’ defense ministry announced that President Alexander Lukashenko paid a visit to a military base where Russian troops are stationed, in but the latest sign of Belarus’ growing support to Russian efforts in Ukraine.

“At this stage, units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are ready to carry out tasks as intended,” a defense ministry official said, describing that Lukashenko discussed ongoing joint drills with Russian commanders. Lukashenko himself reportedly referred to the conflict in Ukraine as part of his country’s “common cause” with Russia.

The Ukrainian government, meanwhile, has continued to charge that Russia is using Belarusian territory to launch drones as it targets energy infrastructure.

Kiev authorities are also warning the population that Russia is preparing a major new offensive and mobilization – warnings which have been going out since December, though which has yet to materialize.

As the The Hill detailed this week:

Some Ukrainian officials also warned last month about a potential new Russian offensive in January or February, including Gen. Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, a top commander in the Ukrainian army who told The Economist that Russia is preparing some 200,000 troops and could have another go at Kyiv.

Ukraine’s defense minister Oleksii Reznikov also issued a New Year message, and in it appealed to the Russian people, warning that Putin his about to declare martial law and close borders to men, in preparation for a new wave of mobilization.

Meanwhile, back in the States….

US won’t fulfill Ukrainian request – WaPo

The US will not send M1 Abrams main battle tanks to Ukraine, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday, citing officials. Despite repeated requests from the Ukrainian government, no NATO power has donated Western-designed battle tanks thus far.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the official said that the Abrams tanks’ heavy fuel consumption and propensity to break down make them unsuitable for the Ukrainian military…

The Abrams’ poor reliability was noted by the GAO. After a decade in service with the US military, the report stated that the average M1 Abrams needs its track replaced after as little as 710 miles, with engines typically suffering catastrophic “blowouts” after 350 hours of operation. However, the US Army insists that the latest M1A2 variant, which rolled off production lines in 2020, “is the most reliable Abrams tank ever produced.”

The problem with sending tanks to Eastern Ukraine is the support needed is a thousand kilometers away at Polish border.. Those tanks after unloading would end up stuck in a field broke down without the techs they require to work. The mask of M1A1 invincibility would be torn in a flash with all the videos of them being blown up on telegram. That tank would just be an expensive target to practice on for arty, rpgs and Kornet missiles.

and drones.. let’s not forget the drones. For example this is what the Russians are doing with drones that can be bought, off the shelf, against the Ukes.

And yeah I know that the grenade will just bounce off those shiny new tanks. But if one is broken in the field if one of those drones show up the mechanics fixing it are going to have a shitty day.

Each of those tanks also require a semi tractor and trailer to haul them from place to place because as you said they only have a few hours and miles in them before major maintenance. I used to do business with the company that makes the air filter. It has to be replaced two or three times a day. Some genius placed the air intake in the back in the middle of the dust cloud they churn up.

The US will not send M1 tanks because they cannot replace them at this time. The excuse about track and engine life is just that; an excuse. Getting 700 mile off a set of tracks or 350 hours off an engine, in battle conditions, doesn’t sound real bad. Notice that the French are talking about sending AMX 10 “light tanks” to Ukraine. They probably just want to get rid of obsolete equipment and make it look like they really care about the Ukies. I am surprised that FJB isn’t clamoring to send our latest M1A2 tanks to Ukraine so we can lose even more military equipment overseas. He’s so stupid he almost makes 0bama look smart.

Successful wars are fought with robust logistics. The Ukrainian army does not have the supply chain to support that tank…and yeah if 200 showed up in Bakhmut they’d be the best tanks on the battlefield but once they start breaking down what would happen?

Well the same thing that happened at Kursk in 1943. There the Germans on paper had a fearsome force of amour to project into that battle. The Tigers and Panthers were the best in class that day. The problem the Germans had was they couldn’t keep those Tigers and Panthers operating.

Many of the tanks broke down before they hardly fired a shot. Worse the problem with maneuver warfare is once those tanks are stopped on tracks they are as good as dead. Pretty hard send out a tank retriever when the front lines move past them..

The same thing will happen if those tanks are sent without support. The only way the effectively deploy tanks is to send the US army with them. That ain’t gonna happen unless folks in Omaha don’t mint the Walmart getting blown up with a Sarmat.

None since Nixon have been particularly bright, except maybe Daddy Bush. And sometimes I confuse massively evil for bright.

Lukashenko is an a no win situation. He depends on Vlad for resources and political support to stay in power. If he joins Vlad and attacks its just a matter of time before he is overthrown and/or defeated and likely killed. If he doesn’t join with Vlad then he will likely have a tragic accident and fall out of a window. So he is stalling and playing for time hoping he doesn’t have to make an irrevocable choice that will end in disaster. If Russia masses troops again in Belarus…we are going to take them out..they won’t get across the border in force.

The Ukrainians are leaving Soledar..

https://t.me/DonbassDevushka/40181?single

And if the ground freezes like it is supposed to this front in Bakhmut area is going to be flanked by Russians just as was done at Stalingrad and all those left in Bakhmut will either have to leave or be surrounded like the 6th army was in 1943…

History repeats
