I was a Widebody International B777 Captain for United Airlines. When Comirnaty was FDA approved, United Airlines, specifically Scott Kirby the CEO, mandated the Covid shots for employees to continue working at United Airlines. It did not matter that Comirnaty was not even being manufactured or available in the United States.

I actually had The Covid virus early on, in November of 2019, which coincidentally I caught flying on a trip for United Airlines. I was sick for 4 days or so, and it was not any worse than other viruses that I had in the past. Post Covid though from November 2019 till October 2020, I had flown all over the world to include Japan, S. Korea, China, India, as well as all over the United States. Not once during that time was I ever sick. I had natural immunity and I still do till this day.

In my opinion, I think United Airlines mandated the Covid Shots, because it was “payback” for the PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) loans which paid employees salaries at United for quite a long time during the economic downturn from The Covid Pandemic. I believe, I can’t prove though, that somewhere in the fine print of the PPP loans that once an FDA approved Covid shot was developed that the airlines would be required to mandate it, or pay back the money from the PPP. That would be well over a Billion dollars. This plan was rolled out under the Trump Administration.

Anyway, the more I researched the shots, the more Red Flags I came across. United’s policy was, take the shots or you will be terminated. ALPA United, the pilot’s union at UAL, wanted the pilots who did not take the shots gone from the Company. They negotiated with the Company to pay a huge stipend to pilots who got the shots, prior to the mandate. In my case, this would have equated to about $3800. Most pilots praised this, I saw it as a huge Red Flag. If these shots were so safe and were going to save my life, why would they pay me such an outrageous amount to get them. Once Kirby mandated the shots, I felt like I was being considered a “Domestic Terrorist” for not capitulating. I reached out to my Union several times regarding my rights and options, but never once received a reply. It was take the shot or else.

I applied for a religious exemption, and was approved. But United’s Religious Accommodation was extremely punitive. It was a up to six year leave of absence, with no pay or benefits. I asked someone in HR if I took the LOA, would I be able to retire at a later date if I so desired, the answer was no. Only active employees could retire. The only thing retirement would benefit me would be future Pass Travel, and slightly reduced Health Insurance, we had already lost our pilot pensions in Bankruptcy in the early 2000s. I asked what happens at the end of the six year LOA, and was told that if the mandate was still in place, I would be terminated at that time.

There were no good options. Take the shots, which I felt were unsafe, or take up to a six year Unpaid LOA. I chose instead to walk away from United Airlines, as I realized I was simply a widget whose own ability to make my own health decisions regarding my life meant nothing in the eyes of a tyrannical CEO. I retired in October of 2020 at 56 years old, after working for 26 years at United. Do I regret retiring early? I’m not happy about it, but I am healthier today than when I was actively working for United. Being a pilot for a major airline is not the healthiest profession. Disrupted sleep patterns, unhealthy eating on the road, and lack of proper physical exercise take a toll on your body. I made it a point to try and get as much sleep as possible and to exercise regularly while traveling, and also to try and eat as healthy as possible. The average Airline Pilot is overweight and not in the greatest physical shape. These shots, IMO, are a ticking time bomb.

I talked to several pilots at United before I decided to walk away over the shots. The answers I received were either they were for the shots and supported the narrative, or that they did not want the shots but financially could not afford to lose their jobs. Scott Kirby and ALPA United knew that pilots faced will termination or a lengthy period of unpaid leave would make nearly every pilot succumb to the shots, even if they didn’t want to.

As a side note, there is an FAA regulation that stipulates that any new drug cannot be approved for use by pilots until it has been fully FDA approved and available for 2 years, so that any side effects from the new drug will hopefully be uncovered and the FAA will then decide if the drug can safely be used by pilots or not. This regulation was disregarded and waived for the Covid shots, and now we find out the EKG acceptable parameters have been relaxed for pilots. IMO, this is not good and will negatively affect Airline Safety.
