I once visited my cousin in Mississippi. Her husband was stationed at the Air Base in Jackson. The year was 19**…Clinton was in the White House. I casually mentioned a social problem caused by niggers and got a fifteen minute lecture on why I was a bad person for using a word.

It was not used by me much until I moved to Memphrica and since I retired and seldom go into that town, it has not been used by me much.

Living in the city is probably about as risky as being a miner or a logger. I don’t know many urbanites who have not been assaulted at some point.
That being said, if you make that decision the single most important thing you can do to avoid violence is to remain aware of your environment. You cannot blithely wander about, unarmed, alone, at night and expect to be safe. It’s foolish in the extreme. If you do and you suffer, then take your licks and look at it as a kind of tax you pay for the privilege of being able to get take-out 24/7.
