US Cattle Prices Hit Nine-Year High As National Herd Drops To Half-Century Low

Via ZeroHedge

If you’ve been to your local butcher or checked out the meat section in a supermarket, you’re aware that beef prices are still high, and in some instances, are continuing to rise.

Readers have been well informed about “beeflation” and why it’s happening:

Due to the continued scarcity of beef cattle supplies, there appears to be no relief in sight, and as a result, cash markets have risen this week to $165 per 100 pounds – the highest level since the record peaks of 2014. At this point nine years ago, ranchers resorted to reducing their herds to combat the high feed prices and drought.

As we noted the other day, “Americans need to be prepared to eat a lot less beef, because the size of the national cattle herd is steadily shrinking.”

According to the latest report from the USDA, the number of beef cows in this country has fallen to the lowest level since 1962

Don Roose, the founder of US Commodities, a grain and livestock investment and management firm, recently warned:

“We’re still in the contraction phase.

“It takes a long time to build a herd back up again.”

Meaning beef prices at the supermarket might go much higher until demand destruction hits.

However, there is some good news. Global food prices have slid for the eleventh consecutive month. And it gets better: wholesale egg prices collapsed in early February.

The ongoing supply woes could result in a potential continuation of the rise in beef prices — unleashing an affordability crisis in meat. It’s important to remember unelected officials on a global scale are attempting to reshape diets.

Ah, yes, Bloomberg…

The most practical step to avoid eating insects is to become your own producer of food — or buy local.

We just got a half a cow from a local farmer…$4/lb hanging weight plus processing. Got well over 200lbs of good meat out of it. I think we paid about the same a few years ago when we got our last cow. I haven’t seen store prices but I heard the big stores were selling ground for like $6-8/lb and good strips for over $15/lb and those aren’t quality cuts compared to the black angus we buy.

It depends where you are. Our local store had $3 a pound for the beef with only 10% fat this week. I got close out 3 lb rolls a month ago for $2.99 for the regular hamburger. New York strips were $5 a lb last week.

Our last purchase was half a beef at about $5/lb. packaged. We are still eating through it. We have to get creative with all the ground beef.

I don’t think I am starting my cattle herd until next year. I am really leaning toward the South Poll breed.

Now you know why they post anonymously. They’re just barely able to experience shame. Stands to reason they can’t stand behind their insane notions. They’re indefensible.

Considering the way the packers hose the cow/calf operators by buying the feeders for near cost of raising them and then add in the drouth, pastures being broken up due to high crop prices and you have the reason many cow/calf operators are getting out of the business. Even with higher feeder calf prices it would take several years before the cow herd could be rebuilt. Now let’s look at the packers. 3-4 packers control the entire beef industry and their price fixing is a thing of legend among calf producers. In the 1920’s there were 4 packers who controlled 20% of the market and the government broke them up for being a monopoly. Now 3-4 packers control over 90% and the government turns a blind eye to them. Hogs and chicken producers are in the same boat. Raise animals for the packers or get out of the business since most if not all of the production is tied directly to the packers.

The gov’t makes it hard on the small butcher shops and wants any excuse to shut them down; god forbid a producer like me cut up a cow or chicken for a friend, or sell eggs, that might get me prison time. Yet in foreign countries they do it all the time and nobody dies much less gets sick. The US Dept of Ag sends out “Census” forms for us to complete per some Law listing every piece of equipment we have, every animal and plant we produce for statistical purposes. It’s no different than registering your guns for the Nazis. PS: Folks, bread will increase in price because wheat is a fertilizer intensive crop. I have ordered two dozen meat rabbits from a producer as my breeding stock because they only require 5 amino acids in their diet, eat some hay in winter, even eat wild mustard which is plentiful & nothing else eats , are easy to raise and process, even for urbanites who will be a good market. During the Depression, they were called the Poor Man’s Protein and Depression II is kicking in the door, thanks to FJB, the Fed and Banksters.

They are going for about $500 here and I can’t imagine that’s even break even. I met a couple people this last year that just switched to selling hay to the people still holding on.

I am just a hobby farmer, so I don’t have to make money off it. It will probably take me several years just to get proficient enough to possibly make money. Meanwhile all my money goes into it. I keep thinking I am going to have all the tools I need, so I can quit buying them, but that never seems to be the case.

I never appreciated how much money was laying around grandpa’s farm. Now I know why he was poor (in money).

Depends where you are and how old the bull is (how long you have fed him) and how heavy the bull is. They are about $600 now at one year in north Florida and that is about break even, and better than normal at an auction here, which isn’t getting much business lately.

The workman is worthy of his wages.

You could always do your own butchering and save your money.

Of course, you’d better know what you’re doing.

Fixing climate change will require some sacrifice. It’s the cow farts that are killing the planet. Climate change causes cold winters, mild springs, warm summers and cool, breezy falls. Is this your first day on the planet or something?

I’ll register my animals with the USDA like I’ll register my guns with the FBI; we have sense enough not to send them a lists so why send them a list of our animals? I have my 3rd notice from the USDA this year that I’m breaking the Law for not registering my animals for the 2023 USDA “Census”. Guess I’ll just have to join the J6 guys in jail. How about some political support for us farmers and ranchers from y’all Consumers. The Federal government should be required to go thru the State Departments of Agriculture; not the full force of the Federal government come down on individual farmers and ranchers.
