SUNDAY MORNING CLASSICS ON TBP – SPECIAL EASTER EDITION

A collaboration of: “The Classic Music Mafia”
Anthony Aaron, nkit, and Steve C.

Every Sunday morning we present selections for our TBP family to enjoy.

We present symphonies, ensembles, quartets, octets, etc.

Not all of our music is strictly ‘classical’. We may stray a little, but we strive to make all of our selections ‘classy’.

We offer tips on proper ‘symphony etiquette’ and even some selections that are a bit light-hearted and fun aimed at a younger audience. Those pieces will be so designated, and might be a good way to introduce kids to a world of music that they might not have been exposed to or think of as old and ‘stuffy’.

A full symphony will run as long as it will. We don’t want to cut a symphony short. However, we also include some shorter pieces that we try to keep under fifteen minutes in length. You can sample each and hopefully find one or more that pleases you.

We hope that you enjoy our Sunday selections.

OTYKEN – PHENOMENON

Maybe the younger folks will join me, a youthful 60 year old in enjoying this brand new piece by Otyken:

Your attention is presented the title track from the album “Phenomenon”. The name does not mean the phenomenon of the OTYKEN group or its music, but the manifestation of the spiritual, true light in the heart of every person. In this song, we tried to convey the idea of the soul’s desire for the light that we need both in joy and in sorrow. We sing when we are sad and when we have fun. Human life is dynamic and consists of ups and downs. In difficult time, we need support. We are looking for someone to rely on. Sometimes true friends help us, sometimes relatives do. But there are times when we can rely only on ourselves and on the Almighty.

Perhaps the song “Phenomenon” will help you find yourself, believe in yourself and find a way out of a difficult situation. We present our songs to all people on earth. Thanks for your support and donations.
Listen to the new album “Phenomenon”. We tried to make all the tracks as harmonic with each other as possible, created a single atmosphere, sound, style and manner of performance. It was necessary so the album could be listened to in one breath as one continuous story. All songs smoothly flow from one to another. The album “Phenomenon” exquisitely combines modern genres of EDM, Rock, Pop, Techno, R&B with ethnic musical instruments, traditions and vocals of the indigenous peoples of Siberia. This music is for dancing, meditation, for the soul and vivid impressions.

OTYKEN group consists of many indigenous and small peoples of Siberia: Chulyms, Kets, Selkups, Khakases, Dolgans, Tuvans. This is the only multinational collaboration of indigenous Siberians in the Folk-Pop music genre so far. The culture of the indigenous peoples of Siberia has a close connection with the American natives, the Japanese Ainu and all Turkic peoples.

Members of the music video OTYKEN – PHENOMENON:

Today’s selections will be more eclectic than usual … I beg your indulgence …

The piece is a personal favorite: ‘Cantus In Memory Of Benjamin Britten’, written by Arvo Pärt to commemorate the death of his friend and composer, Benjamin Britten.

“Arvo Part’s biographer suggests that “how we live depends on our relationship with death: how we make music depends on our relationship to silence”. It is death that sparks this piece. The characteristic Buddhist response to death is to search for the deathless. In the story of the four sights the Buddha-to-be goes forth into homelessness, into the unknown, in order to solve the problems of old age, sickness and death. In listening to Cantus, especially for the first time, we go into the unknown. The bell heralds death, it is the funeral bell and the initial response is instability. The first few bars seem to teeter on the edge of chaos, and we may be asking ourselves: “is this going to be one of those discordant, morbid, ‘modern’ works?”. But soon things settle into a more recognisable pattern, and the entry of the lower voiced, slower moving instruments provides much needed stability. The quest has begun, each voice begins searching downwards, repeatedly pushing lower and lower, seeking something. The result is a sonorous tapestry, swirling with colour and unexpected conjunctions of tension and relaxation, which result not from the whim of the composer, but come from the structure of the canon itself.

“And then one by one each voice finds the pitch it has been seeking, sustains it until the end, which is more than 250 beats in the case of the 1st violins. The spiritual life is like this. We search around looking for answers to the big questions. Then when we find the Dharma, we don’t get answers, but we get practices which can take us to a place where the questions are transcended. Once we have the practices it’s just a matter of sawing away until we reach the goal. We do this on an ever deeper level until at last the light of Bodhi dawns, and we are transformed in the deepest level of our being. As the double basses finally hit their note there is a palpable sense of relief, of relaxation combined with energy.

“And then suddenly the music stops – or almost. In this moment there is a sense of spiritual death. As Bodhi dawns we die to our old self, our old self-centeredness. But with spiritual death there is spiritual renewal, and even though we don’t hear the striking of the bell, it is struck, and rings on after the reverberations of the strings have died away. This last bell is the opening of the door to the deathless, or perhaps more prosaically it is the opening of the imagination to the possibility of the deathless. At this point there is little more to be said, since Nirvana is ineffable. And so we return to silence, once again written into the score. But this is not the silence of the absence of sound. It is the silence that is sound, and the sound is silence.”

Pärt – Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten – Järvi

Loreena McKennitt is a consummate artist whose music often tells stories – stories of journeys of heart and soul and mind and body … pulled from Celtic history and elsewhere … with beautiful music and lyrics and voicing …

Loreena McKennitt — The Highwayman

Loreena McKennitt – “The Old Ways” (with Lyrics)

Loreena McKennit – Dante’s Prayer (original-HD + lyrics)

Happy listening, one and all … enjoy this Easter Sunday …

STAR WARS Suite for Orchestra (Complete Soundtrack) Orquesta y Coro RTVE

Back in 1977 I wasn’t much into fantastical movies, and I remain that way as a grumpy old man. So when the George Lucas production of “Star Wars” hit the screen, well, for me that might have been the original “meh.” Now, I eventually got around to watching the original movie and it confirmed my earlier feelings. I watched it once, and never saw another of the series.

Now, the music from the movie was better than the movie in my opinion.

I know that some folks on TBP speak highly of Star Wars and the numerous follow-ups, so knowing that, I will play the Complete Soundtrack as recorded by Orquesta y Coro RT Ve.

1. Main Theme 00:00
2. Leia’s Theme 06:20
3. Battle of Heroes 11:47
4. The Imperial March 17:30
5. Duel of the Fates 21:19
6. The Throne Room 25:54

I hope you enjoy this small trip down Memory Lane – no kin to Lois.

Have a wonderful Sunday!

KORSAKOV – Russian Easter Festival Overture, Op.36

By The Czech National Symphony Orchestra

Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov (Russian: Николай Андреевич Римский-Корсаков; Russian pronunciation: [nʲɪkəˌlaj ˌrʲim.skʲɪj ˈkorsəkəf]; 18 March [O.S. 6 March] 1844 — 21 June [O.S. 8 June] 1908) was a Russian composer, and a member of the group of composers known as The Five. He was a master of orchestration. His best-known orchestral compositions—Capriccio Espagnol, the Russian Easter Festival Overture, and the symphonic suite Scheherazade—are staples of the classical music repertoire, along with suites and excerpts from some of his 15 operas. Scheherazade is an example of his frequent use of fairy tale and folk subjects.

Russian Easter Festival Overture: Overture on Liturgical Themes, Op. 36 (Svetliy prazdnik, also known as the Great Russian Easter Overture) is a concert overture written by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov between August 1887 and April 1888, and dedicated to the memories of Modest Mussorgsky and Alexander Borodin, two members of the group of composers known in English as “The Five”. It is the last of the composer’s series of what many call his three most exceptionally brilliant orchestral works, preceded by Capriccio Espagnol and Scheherazade. The work received its premiere at a Russian symphony concert in St. Petersburg in late December 1888.

Thanks for the list.. I had time before I left for Resurrection Day services to squeeze in Ode to Joy/ Beethoven’s ninth. So powerful– as he said himself, “the power of music is to uplift the soul.”

Thanks as always for the time you folks putting this together.

As always,a defense against world news depression by having a piece run in the background while seeing the daily decline in the news(with at moments a good piece of news).

This magnificent song is the only good thing to come out of the slave trade … and hopefully it signaled the redemption of its composer for his part in that infamous period of our History …

Thankfully, there have been many versions of this song — in 1990 Bill Moyers hosted a PBS Special showcasing numerous versions of it …

…loves the selections and abundant offerings today.

bullet points:
-Nice comment / add, Admin team.

-The Ave Maria is an amazing composition.

-Mozart’s Requiem, Confutatis / Lacrimosa can be tough to appreciate for some, but his talent for complicated, yet beautiful creativity cannot be doubted. He was raised as a believer, and IMHO, was a prime example of how God shines through some of our fellow man. As Salieri said in amazement, in Amadeus, “this one was touched by the very hand of God” as evidenced by his ability and output.
And yet, he wasn’t the only one.

-and lastly, this made me smile…”enjoy this small trip down Memory Lane – no kin to Lois.” You’re a gem, my friend.

Happy Easter to all who find these pages, and call them familiar.

addendum…

In searching for the scene in Amadeus, where Mozart, on his deathbed, is still creating, and trying to convey to Salieri the complex harmonies of the Confutatis / Lacrimosa to Salieri, who just struggles to understand the chaos,
it seems the scene has been scrubbed from YT, perhaps due to copyright infringements. Sad. I can’t recommend that movie enough.

BUT, here’s one guys transcript of it.
Maybe someone with better searching skills can find the scene online, and post it here.

An amazing movie about an extraordinary composer … brilliantly done and with some of the most beautiful music of the Western World …

Equally amazing about another extraordinary composer is ‘Immortal Beloved’ about Beethoven — culminating with his first performance of the immortal 9th Symphony …

What is even more mind blowing — and distressing — is how these towering giants of our Musical History and Musical Culture are now being relegated — overthrown — and replaced by — what? who?

And all because some folks hate the White race — including some mentally deranged white folks, too …
