When he reported for his first assignment as a 22 year old 2nd Lt. in the Marines, the Battalion Commander thought it would be good for laughs to temporarily make him company commander of a company without a Captain. He performed at such a high level he remained company commander. He shot expert with both the .45 and M-14 right handed and left handed! Later, in the Kennedy years he was a CIA soldier who fought with the South Vietnamese and advised them.
He put his ass on the line to get the truth out.

“The “Pentagon Papers” was actually a formal government-funded study of the history of United States involvement in Vietnam… On June 17, 1967 the Secretary of Defense, Robert S. McNamara directed that work, and a task force of 36 professionals under the direction of Leslie H. Gelb produced the studies that were presented on January 15, 1969 to the then-Secretary of Defense, Clark M. McNamara, Ellsberg and Gelb also became lifetime members of the liberal-fascist Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). McNamara joined in 1968, Ellsberg joined in 1969, and Gelb joined in 1973. Gelb was later the CFR president (1993-2003).
