A collaboration of: “The Classic Music Mafia”
Anthony Aaron, and Steve C.
Every Sunday morning we present selections for our TBP family to enjoy.
We present symphonies, ensembles, quartets, octets, etc.
Not all of our music is strictly ‘classical’. We may stray a little, but we strive to make all of our selections ‘classy’.
We offer tips on proper ‘symphony etiquette’ and even some selections that are a bit light-hearted and fun aimed at a younger audience. Those pieces will be so designated, and might be a good way to introduce kids to a world of music that they might not have been exposed to or think of as old and ‘stuffy’.
A full symphony will run as long as it will. We don’t want to cut a symphony short. However, we also include some shorter pieces that we try to keep under fifteen minutes in length. You can sample each and hopefully find one or more that pleases you.
We hope that you enjoy our Sunday selections.

Vienna Philharmonic – Barber: Adagio for Strings, Op.11 (Summer Night Concert 2019)
This is a truly beautiful piece of music and a very pretty video.
The Summer Night Concert was performed on June 20th, 2019. It is an annual open-air event, which has been held since 2008. The park of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna/Austria is the magical setting for the concert, which is free of charge for all residents and visitors of the city.
Central to the programme of the Vienna Philharmonic’s 2019 Summer Night Concert was a musical history of the United States of America: the works that were heard in the 2019 set are composed in or for the USA, while also constituting links with the Viennese musical tradition.
Richard Wagner: Prelude to «Lohengrin», Simon Rattle
Another truly beautiful piece of music.
The Saddest Concerto of All Time
And now for one more lesson in classical music.
Concertos aren’t particularly well known for being sad, so in this video I talk about a piece I think is probably the Saddest Concerto ever written. I explain how it flips the norms of the concerto genre.
Jacqueline du Pre & Daniel Barenboim – Elgar Cello Concerto
And now here’s the piece in its entirety…
Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85, his last notable work, is a cornerstone of the solo cello repertoire.
Elgar composed it in the aftermath of the First World War, when his music had already gone out of fashion with the concert-going public. In contrast with Elgar’s earlier Violin Concerto, which is lyrical and passionate, the Cello Concerto is for the most part contemplative and elegiac.
The first performance was a debacle because Elgar and the performers had been deprived of adequate rehearsal time. The work did not achieve wide popularity until the 1960s, when a recording by Jacqueline du Pré caught the public imagination and became a classical best-seller.
The Classic Music Mafia – Adding some class to this joint one Sunday at a time.
Heaven help us…
The 2nd, Andantino movement in K 299, though featured here before, is a delightful sound on a Summer Sunday morn.
If I had to pick just one from today’s submittals,
I pick Booger’s.
Shhh.
I hate to do it, but have to agree with you.😁
THANKS VERY MUCH for this weekly temple of goodness truth and beauty sanctuary away from the collective insanity of the world today. Her is the first offering of fabulous guitar work.
First selection.
The second one is a special performance.
Here is the world-famous child prodigy, Yuja Wang, performing three pieces with her usual SUPERB skill.
Ravel lively piece
Second offer. Concerto for two pianos / Mozart / Yuja and Mr. Shani.
Rare to see Yuja reading music as she has almost ALL the classical pieces memorized!
#3 = Prokofiev Concerto #3 in C major
This Sabre Dance music should get everyone’s heart pumping and toe-tapping. New to me. Enjoy.
This SUPERB performance of a classical performance of very classical music is to be savored slowly,
on a large screen.
Gentlemen, this educational treatise on music is worthy of extraction from the internal to receive some serious attention for those that care to take the time for this SUPERB educational endeavor!
Something you don’t see everyday
All – Thank you for the beautiful music.
AA- Thank you for Zimmer.
Steve C. – Thank you for the sad music of Barber, Wagner, and Elgar, plus the additional music lesson.
Hope to see you next week.
We’ll be expecting you next week, Leah …
Zimmer writes short pieces … but so many of them are really beautiful … and he’s got some excellent soloists working with him.
Another writer of beautiful — but mostly short — short pieces is Max Richter … although he did do a ‘Reimagined’ version of Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ …
Chillsville. Holy cow.
Holy Cows make Burger Kings…
