‘Something Just Snapped’: Consumers Panic Search “Pawn Shop Near Me”

Via ZeroHedge

Cash-strapped Americans are panic-searching “pawn shop near me.” The search trend spiked to a record high at the start of July and is an ominous sign the consumer might be pawning items or selling things that were possibly bought during the Covid boom to raise quick money amid the worst inflation storm in a generation.

Let’s begin by analyzing Google search data for “pawn shop near me.” The search trend started surging in January and exploded higher in the last few months to record highs just days ago.

Interest in the search trend is nationwide. Some of the most interest is in the Deep South.

Google provides related search trends that are all in “breakout” territory, including “pawn shop,” “open pawn shop near me,” “pawn shop open,” and “cash pawn shop near me.”

Perhaps ‘Bidenomics’ isn’t working. Consumers, who’ve endured more than two years of negative real wage growth while depleting savings and racking up record amounts of credit card debt in the highest interest rate in a generation, are tapping new lifelines by panic selling items for cash. Think about all those stay-at-home purchases consumers made during the pandemic…

This could be more evidence the consumer is cracking. Companies, such as Cheerios maker General Mills and Walgreens Boots Alliance, have recently warned about a weakening consumer. Goldman’s Rich Privorosky told clients last month, “Something is not quite adding up on the consumer” and asked, “Have we just run out of excess savings and are we returning to replenishing savings?”

Some “pawn shops” are also FFL licensed.

Additionally, pawn shops sell untraceable gold (unlike online dealers).

Either way, Google search results has to be the lowest form of evidence ever invented.

pawn shops sell untraceable gold

Total bullshit. To them it’s taxable income.

In reality land, that’s what we call traceable as all fuck.

Are you fully fucking retarded?

If you pay for gold online with a credit or debit card, the bank knows what you bought, how much and from whom. If/when govt wants to know, the bank has the records handy.

If you buy gold with cash from a pawnshop, neither bank nor IRS knows who bought that gold.
When the pawnshop does it’s taxes, the individual items sold aren’t itemized for the IRS. The income could have been from gold, or furniture or fucking power tools for all the IRS knows.

UN-FUCKING-TRACEABLE!!

You sound like m with his asinine theory that every Fran’s serial number is somehow logged and tracked with every transaction.

I happen to not be the anonymous that you routinely trade insults with. I know you don’t care, and I don’t care that you don’t care. If you’re so opposed to anonymity then dox yourself, you pretentious coward.

You have a serious ego problem and way too much time on your hands.

UNTRACEABLE …. You fuckwit.

Not paranoid or anything, but it might be prudent to leave the phone at home, park at a neighboring business, wear a covid mask, and use cash when buying gold or ammo at a pawn shop in 2023 America.

I see many of the “anonymous” comments here lately and can’t help but be reminded of one of the recent Plato quotes…

Anyway, to the “anonymous” cock sucker above (and likely below and sideways as well), I’ll call you a maroon instead of a retard since you are partially right, but also very much wrong.

Next time you go off cowardly spewing insults from your bastion of ignorance, at least try to give the appearance of knowing what the fuck you are talking about.

With that in mind, go look up the reporting requirements for IRS Form 8300 and educate yourself a bit. It might actually be useful knowledge.

The pawnshop near me is mostly guns and jewelry. They keep some tools and whatnot but based on the condition and outrageous prices it seems they have no interest in selling them anytime soon.

I’m no accountant but I’d reckon there’s a lot of little hats spinning in the background to walk cash around without the taxfags getting their pudgy fingers in the pie.

Unrelated, there’s the local Lowe’s. Which regularly has guys running out with arms full of items that are totally not on Facebook marketplace the next day. A sheriff’s deputy friend likes to say that our County’s crime rate would be halved if we didn’t have a Walmart.

Even so, the ‘pawnshop near me’ seems to reflect the fentanyl distribution network aka white death more than the recession/depression that is also totally not happening.

And just (((who))) do you think invented pawnshops? They’re great for taking advantage of people who’re in financial difficulties … paying pennies on the dollar for your good stuff.

I would like to see this map compared to a retail shoplifter map…you know, to see if the bump in pawn shop searches had anything to do with criminals seeking to sell stolen merchandise.

Or perhaps a retail theft graph side by side with the internet search graph?

Seems the stories might be related.
They might not, but it is possible…

Search term:
“2023 shoplifting increase graph”

Perhaps this had some effect on the rate of retail theft:

“Since 2000, at least 39 states have increased the value of stolen goods required to trigger a felony charge. States that increased their thresholds experienced the same overall decline in property crimes over the last two decades as states that did not, the analysts found.”

Is there really a shoplifting ‘epidemic?’

I would bet that both the theft and the declining economy account for the increase in “pawn shop near me” searches.

Young and inexperienced ones overspend on credit. They follow through and compound the error by later selling all those things they paid at retail plus interest, for pennies on the dollar. [Often while still paying off the original debt.]

In my armchair analysis I would say that consumers in trouble along with retail theft both contribute a percentage in the increase in pawn searches.
Edit add:
Oh, another one might be relatives seeking to sell off the valuables of the successfully vaxxed.

Before the 4th of July 2 years ago, illegal fireworks began being heard in my city weeks before the actual holiday. I mean, elaborate, almost professional grade fireworks being shot off every night for many hours. I can’t imagine the cost of them. This year, occasional fireworks were heard on the run up, and I saw few of the type that spectacularly explode high in the sky. My guess that it is not because people have become more aware of safety concerns, but because the effects of all that stimulus money has worn off. The money’s gone.

My observations and theory also. Where I live for years I used to hear them going off all night long. Not so this year. Barely anything.

Will echo this same sentiment. I did a fairly involved and costly fireworks show for friends and family on the 4th, as has been a tradition for several years running. Those in the vicinity of the shoot site typically do a LOT of fireworks collectively, and for the last few years a number of people do rather elaborate individual shows like I did. Granted, some of my product was left over from last year, which padded the running time by a good bit, but I still went pretty heavy on what was purchased this year.

What was notable two nights ago is that I was now the “big dog” of the surrounding area, doing more in quantity and duration than anyone else I observed around us. I’m not saying that to brag, mind you, and this is clearly not a scientific data point arrived at through proper research methods. But, the difference was undeniable versus last year, and especially two years ago. So much so that I was shocked by the obvious cutback of those who had previously gone all out.

Now, this is not a conventional data metric, but I consider it quite telling. I also told most of those invited to attend that this year may be the last of the Mohicans in terms of big, elaborate pyro presentations, as my expectations for the foreseeable future aren’t good. Aside from the cost (which has been manageable for me, even including this year), I have a gut feeling sporty times will be upon us before the next annual observance of Independence Day, making a conspicuously large – or possibly any – fireworks shoot inadvisable, if not outright unaffordable.

Naturally I hope to be wrong about that, but the rate of decay – be it economic, social, violent criminal activity, open corruption in govt – is all visibly increasing, and now at what feels like an exponential rate.

We can color coordinate with the commies and for the 4th we’ll all just use tracers for the day. The mix of greens and reds and perhaps a couple more colors will make it a day to remember.
You might want to still get the big stuff and experiment a little. Back in the 60’s we were launching model rockets with “payloads.” You can scramble signals and stop drones but there’s no antennae or microchips in a wood/cardboard/plastic/propellant gizmo you light with a match.

Same in my area. And it’s rural, you can shoot off as much as you want. Firework stands everywhere.
It was very quiet compared to years past. At least a week before and after. This year there was some going off a couple days before and on the 4th and none after.

Sold a trailer to a guy who recently moved to Charlotte from NY. Still had his NY plates. I couldn’t tell if he was a liberal or not and didn’t ask. He told me to stay out of Charlotte. He was obviously regretting his move. I didn’t need his advice as I used to have to go there now and again for my job. Soon to be the next Detroit, Chicongo, Baltimore, etc.
