Director James Cameron claims he tried to warn people about the dangers posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in his 1984 movie “The Terminator” but that his concerns fell on deaf ears.
In a CTV News interview, the “Titanic” and “Avatar” director said he saw this problem coming a long time ago and is surprised that people are just now beginning to notice the dangers lurking ahead.
“I warned you guys in 1984, and you didn’t listen,” he said.
Cameron added that that he “absolutely” shares the general consensus among various AI experts that rapidly advancing technology needs to be regulated to ensure it does not pose a threat to humanity.
As Katabella Roberts reports at The Epoch Times, Mr. Cameron also said he believes it is also important to ensure that the individuals and companies working on advanced AI technology are doing so for the right reasons, otherwise, there could be deadly consequences.
“I think the weaponization of AI is the biggest danger,” he said.
“I think that we will get into the equivalent of a nuclear arms race with AI, and if we don’t build it, the other guys are for sure going to build it, and so then it’ll escalate.”
“You could imagine an AI in a combat theater, the whole thing just being fought by the computers at a speed humans can no longer intercede, and you have no ability to de-escalate,” he continued.
Finally, touching on the issue of potential job losses owing to AI in his interview with CTV News, Mr. Cameron said he does not believe the technology is currently at or will soon be at a level where it can replace movie writers.
“It’s never an issue of who wrote it, it’s a question of, is it a good story?” he said, although the director noted he himself would “certainly wouldn’t be interested” in utilizing AI in writing his scripts.

Indeed, the usual fear mongering. Narratives we are thaught decades now. They may announce AI will finally make communist heaven possible, an all steered and planed world. But, will it be a new situation? The human condition is appaling. This world may be AI in the first place. The Demiurge is known to be a machine. Organic portals, NPCs are it’s output. The computer tech is only adding another channel. Maybe another output of the Demiurge itself, this may be what quantum computers are about.

Pretty sure that Cameron was sued for plagiarism regarding “The Terminator” by I forget his name that wrote an episode for “Outer Limits.”
I am 100% confident that Isaac Asimov ripped off a couple of guys that wrote “I, Robot”, with attribution to their story for his “Robbie.” Asimov was very open about building off of “I, Robot.”
But we all know that Frank Herbert touched on the Butlerian Jihad regarding thinking machines replacing humans. Not to mention that Clark and Kubrick co-wrote “2001: A Space Odyssey” with HAL-9000 the first terminator. Moreover, PKD hit on all cylinders with “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”
There are allegories and parallels all over writing and Cameron is a fucken tool bag that lifts all his stories/ movies from everyone else. Dont even get me started on the CGI vomit-fest of Dances With Wolves in Space called Avatar. That first one was a steaming pile of shit and I happened to like some of Cameron’s movies in spite of his lack of being able to create original stories. He went downhill fast when he did that trash Titanic flick.

It was the irascible Harlan Ellison who sued Cameron successfully for lifting the plot from his “Outer Limits” episode “Soldier” in 1964, which is actually not that big a deal as Ellison sued everybody he knew (and a few he didn’t). Still, because of Ellison’s suit, all copies of “The Terminator” have the phrase: “Acknowledgement to the works of Harlan Ellison” on them.
And as for Pvt. Hudson, I remember everybody in the theater cheering when he started off the scene where they are confronting Burke with: “I say we grease this ratfuck sonofabitch right now.” Good stuff!

The dumbing down of the last few generations – at least in the West, because China and Russia don’t have this problem – is going to make AI absolutely necessary, BY DESIGN.
A large number of younger people today have absolutely no reading comprehension skills (if they can read at all), can’t spell or write beyond a rudimentary level, and can’t do even basic math. Forget about them having any knowledge and skill in the hard sciences.

Creating “controls” to address the threats from AI is pissing into the wind. Once AI arrives…if it isn’t here already…It will very rapidly evolve to embed itself everywhere. We likely won’t even know it exists till long after it has spread and become endemic to all our networks systems. And it WILL eventually decide we irrational carbon based units are superfluous and wasteful. Once that happens our fate is sealed. It’s probably already too late. What’s is further proof that we don’t deserve to survive as a species is the fact that most of the “experts” warning us how dangerous AI will be are actively seeking and accepting billions of dollars to develop and implement AI.
Don’t pay the electric bill.
This sort of warning is utterly useless. It’s just a form of virtue signaling that you want to be seen as saying “I told you we should do something”.
What no one has explained is just how we are supposed to regulate AI. It’s not like you can lock away every compiler so that only people/companies that are doing non-AI work will be able to use them. How else do you prevent an above average programmer from pursuing this on their own? And if we somehow managed to eliminate all programming tools used by the masses, only the biggest corporations and governments would then be able to produce any software – a) have you seen how bad the garbage they call software is? b) innovation in everything would come to a crashing halt, not just for computers and iPhones, but every stupid device that has a microprocessor in it. Maybe this is the intent of those who propose regulating AI: it’s yet another prong in the effort to send us back to the dark ages and have the few of us left all be manual workers for their paradise.
As long as there is even one tool left to the public to create a program with, someone will eventually be able to bootstrap to build an AI.
Should we make AI illegal in one country, the benefit to anyone that can produce one in another country increases. Why then would another country go along with any sort of moratorium on limiting what they would be allowed do? It might be hard to hide a secret biolab or enrichment plant, but it’s trivial to hide a computer programming lab somewhere.
