SUNDAY MORNING CLASSICS ON TBP

A collaboration of: “The Classic Music Mafia”
Anthony Aaron, and Steve C.

Every Sunday morning we present selections for our TBP family to enjoy.

We present symphonies, ensembles, quartets, octets, etc.

Not all of our music is strictly ‘classical’. We may stray a little, but we strive to make all of our selections ‘classy’.

We offer tips on proper ‘symphony etiquette’ and even some selections that are a bit light-hearted and fun aimed at a younger audience. Those pieces will be so designated, and might be a good way to introduce kids to a world of music that they might not have been exposed to or think of as old and ‘stuffy’.

A full symphony will run as long as it will. We don’t want to cut a symphony short. However, we also include some shorter pieces that we try to keep under fifteen minutes in length. You can sample each and hopefully find one or more that pleases you.

We hope that you enjoy our Sunday selections.

Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade – op.35 – Simply Stunning Performance

Another ‘feature’ by ursel doran. This piece was already posted by us, but that was in 2021. Since it’s by our favorite symphony orchestra – the Gimnazija Kranj Symphony Orchestra – we’ve decided it was time to relist it.

It was posted by ursel six weeks ago and we felt that it needed to be reposted. – Steve C.

This SUPERB performance of a classical performance of very classical music is to be savored slowly, on a large screen.

The Next Six Pieces Come To Us Thanks To ursel doran.

Ralph VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: Oboe Concerto in A minor

This concerto was written in 1944, for the oboist Leon Goossens and was first performed in Liverpool that year, the scheduled London premier having been cancelled due to German bombing.

This performance is by Robin Canter, with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Judd. Referring to the closing bars of the third movement, the Vaughan Williams scholar, Dr Michael Kennedy, said of this work: “Very little of VW’s music is nostalgic, but here he seems to be yearning for some lost and precious thing.

Characteristically, he has put what are some of his most intimate longings into a work which has generally been overlooked. For a few bars the veil is torn aside.” Most listeners will be able to identify the bars Dr Kennedy is referring to.

Jean Sibelius – Symphony No 6

Estonian National Symphony Orchestra performing Sibelius 6th Symphony live in Estonia Concert Hall on February 17th 2023. Conductor – Joseph Swensen.

I Allegro molto moderato
II Allegretto moderato 08:45
III Poco vivace 15:11
IV Allegro molto 19:35

Ralph Vaughan Williams : Norfolk Rhapsody No.1

The “Norfolk Rhapsody No.1”, based on folk songs collected by Vaughan Williams himself, is performed in this recording by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Bryden Thomson.

The paintings are by the English artist Colin W. Burns.

Since you esteemed gentlemen are deviating from the conventional classics of orchestral performances, here is what the poster says is the greatest piano solo of all time.

He covers a good bit of things I like, but yet I don’t like his personality for whatever reason.

IMHO, a Sunday of classics without some Yuja is like a day without sunshine!

Brahms Concerto No. 1 in the open-air square in Munich! Watch her face as her heart and soul get into the music. 50 minutes of this complex piece is another testimony to her genius, along with all the other works!

Shostakovich Concerto No. 2

Schuman concerto in A minor

This doesn’t really fit into the outlined description of Sunday Morning Classics, but it’s probably my favorite song from the whole of the movie Breaking Glass. And doesn’t fit at all with the New Wave theme of the movie.

Sunday folks, will need to give previews/listens on Monday as had a dumpster today and the help to get it filled!

Thus, will view world news while listening on Monday, perhaps cheating but if you ain’t cheating you ain’t winning!

As always, feel classical and hard rock the same without amps for the classical, only real difference for me.

Like this pic, classical and hard rock/metal can come on softly/innocently and then the big musical bang!
