The large amount of anonymous comments are altering the feel of the site. I’d like to explain why commentors should desist in commenting using the attribution “Anonymous”.
The model of the the Platform is a combination of the English Tavern and Aristotle’s Lyceum. Allow me to describe the dynamics.
Imagine an English Tavern that you go into after work. To a varying degree, you know everyone because most are regulars, while some are new visitors. You can identify everyone by their face, which on TBP is their moniker, their chosen name.
You walk into the Tavern, and some of the characters there are close friends, others are distant acquaintances you spoken to on occasion, and others there you’ve heard of, but never conversed with. Some are dear friends, some you purposely avoid, others you consider with curiosity.
Each character has their own philosophy and world view, which they present in conversation, and you learn their worldview through repeated conversations in which you either participate or overhear. As this is no ordinary Tavern, each character is hard-won template of a worldview that is theirs alone. Through the rough-and-tumble of lively conversations, each is a standard-bearer and thus, a teacher and proponent of their view.
The rough-and-tumble of lively argumentation gives these men and women the chance to hone their arguments and skills. They, in turn, give you the opportunity to hone yours. It is Aristotle’s Lyceum, a school of vigorous discussion whereby those of merit rise to the top and those with weaknesses become metaphorically bloodied, yet return again and again, because it is the vigorous argumentation and challenges for which they live and yearn. It is a school of cognitive martial arts.
The use of Anonymous monikers is antithetical to this model. It is as if you walk into the Tavern and everyone is wearing the same mask and you have no means by which to distinguish anyone. It’s confusing and unhelpful.
How do you know with whom you are interacting when you can’t identify them? How do you follow a person’s worldview if you don’t know who is speaking? How do you develop relationships and mentorships if everyone is faceless and there is no continuity?
I’ve been a regular here since 2009 and learned enormous amounts from following the more established regulars. It’s a mentorship, an education, a means of vetting others, and has given me deep and lasting relationships that have changed my life for the better. I’ve become who I am through these interactions. None of this can occur when the Tavern is filled with Anonymous commentors.
So, I ask you: why do you do it? You realize that you are tracked by your IP address, not by your moniker, right? You can still maintain your anonymity from State surveillance by using a VPN. You don’t need to register here to comment, you don’t need to give your email address. All the moniker does is allow us to read your comments and decide if they merit reading and if they provide a coherent worldview worth considering.
No Anonymous comment is worth reading because what is the point? You can’t connect them to any other comment. It is a vision of a schizophrenic world where there is no stability or coherence, no teachers, no friends even. It is a nihilistic world of faceless cogs, comments and quips arising out of the void and returning to it, a world devoid of the significance of relationships.
And so I politely ask for this to be curtailed. I need the Platform to return to the Tavern model, where we can teach other younger men and women and take them under our wing, where we can become the Lyceum again. Please note the older regulars and men and women who retain a constant moniker, who are courageous enough to be held to our past comments, who will take on any newcomers who press us on our views. This is the model of the Platform that has worked so well for all these years.
You can still be anonymous even with a moniker that you chose, so chose one. Become a regular. Develop your character. Embrace what this Tavern on the Internet offers. The model has been consistent for a reason – it works. It is a rarity and a beloved site for a reason. Embrace that. Please respect the Traditions and Culture of the site that have been created over generations for your benefit to produce greatness in yourself.

I knew before scrolling down to read the comments that the first one would either be anon, or assholish. I agree with the well written thread idea, but sometimes posts come out anon because someone just cleared their browser trash that saves form data and didn’t notice, and not intentionally done in any way, or just lazy.
That’s what has happened to me. I dislike the “anonymous” because it seems more cowardly than the usernames we choose…

Back in the old internet days on Slashdot, half of the posts were “Anonymous Coward”, at least there used to be self awareness out there.

I agree with AP in that Anonymous posts add little to TBP. But given that anyone can name themselves anything they happen to like that day, it matters naught. There is no fix that would work aside from a registry and endless vetting and I’m sure that Jim neither has the time or inclination for such a thing. When you attempt to ban, or otherwise curtail free speech, you get a whole other animal that is completely uncontrollable. Although not a direct analogy, consider how poorly rent controls or price-fixing work. The honor system is all that we have really. Such that it is. Those honorable characters amongst us will continue to identify themselves accurately and not need to hide behind an anonymous handle. Trolls gonna troll. I believe they should simply be ignored as best we can. Perhaps they’ll just go away if they are not given any attention. I mostly only put stock in the personas I have come to know and respect.
I mostly agree with Archie’s take on Anon commentors, but typically just ignore them.
I tend to pay more attention to long time regulars that I’m familiar with, reinforcing the tavern analogy.

Many times the ‘named’ commenters turn into a circle jerk, adoring and applauding each other as if no one else had anything valid to say. Many times if one does not agree with those ‘named’ perpetual commenters those ‘named’ commenters rail on others because they are not one of the long time ‘valid’ in their opinion, commenters and they disagree or oppose their opinions.
If one wants a closed system, then make it a private club, where everyone agrees with each other and will be happy mirroring each other.

Well, that was 20 minutes of my time I can’t get back, even skipping most of the anonymous comments. Sorry, AP, I think you wasted your time posting this and I wasted mine reading the comments. But since I decided to comment (took me a minute to decide if it was worth it), I would say the comments have degraded quite a bit since there have been so many anons. On rare occasions an anon will post a comment worth reading but mostly they are dog shit. Yeah a few long time commenters have died, a couple were banned, but most have just left either in disgust or they have better things to do.

It has become increasingly apparent in the last year or so that this site has attracted a certain element it did not have before, and those who brought that element here are incapable of realizing just how obvious are their reasons for doing so. Contrary to their belief, they are not the smartest kids in the room.
I choose to have a moniker because I am unafraid of criticism; I am a grown man and can handle the fact that I am not always right. My ego does not get bruised because somebody disagrees with me. I try to keep reasonably well-informed, and sometimes my information is wrong — but I still speak my mind, and this is the reason I want people to know it is me who says whatever I say, that I am an actual, flawed, human being just trying to make sense of the nonsensical world.
I never flame anyone over the internet, because these sorts of conversations are like men’s figure skating: no matter who wins, you’re still gay.
Choosing a name is like taking a stand, letting people know, yes, this is what I think and should you agree or disagree with me, I am man enough to accept it, and to listen to your point of view. I do not care about upvotes or downvotes. This is called sociality. This is how friendships are made. Maybe someone gets inspiration from something I say and praises me for it; maybe they dislike something and call me an asshole; either way, that person still knows who said it, and this is how normal people behave.
Several older TBP’ers have either stopped completely or only post sporadically now that we have a bunch of posters using Anonymous as a shield to hide behind while they make snarky comments and troll. We had a sense of community that seems to have been purposefully attacked. Where did these people come from, and why did they choose this site, out of all others? It is no coincidence; TBP was bound to attract unwanted attention. And unwanted people.
So stay Anonymous all you want, but know this, from someone with a name: we still know who you are.

I stopped posting because of the anonymous comments. The anonymous people are hostile and like to target certain users for no real legitimate reason.

A solution to the deluge of Anonymous posters:
Admin, is it possible to add a checkbox somewhere, perhaps on the home page or on each article where the comments section starts, which is to “hide all anonymous posts”. When checked set a cookie on the user’s computer so that the setting can be remembered between visits. When this setting is “ON” hide all posts where the post moniker is “Anonymous”.
Great idea, but I think it would make some threads unintelligible.
OK, replace the post content with a placeholder “hidden by your request” – then one would see that there was something but I choose to hide anonymous posts.
We can also try shadow banning the anon comments. It’s just the same as free speech.
Sometimes it is a regular who has been signed off (happens on my phone all the time) and they insert their handle at the end or go back and edit the message to include the handle.

So far I’ve read that: Anonymous posters are trolls, Anonymous posters are worthless, Anonymous posters are hostile, Anonymous posters should be blocked from commenting, Anonymous posters should have their comments deleted, and Anonymous posters are cowards.
I’ve been posting under the Anonymous tag for a long time and only recently started being insulted for doing so. Except for the last couple of months, my comments have always been well received and have resulted in many people agreeing and a few that disagreed. My comments have started good coversations and debates. What the hell happened? Why the sudden shift?
I’ve always thought the message was much more important than the messenger. I’ve learned a lot today about these people who claim to love freedom of speech and freedom in general. I would caution you to be careful or you might just turn into the very thing you claim to be fighting against.
I think if you don’t like comments made by people who use the anonymous tag, then simply pass over them. Starting to demand censorship is very hypocritical and is never a good thing. Just look at where we are with our censorship happy society.

I periodically visited this site for about two years without commenting. Last year I decided to give commenting a try. Observing the comments over the last year or so, I have noticed a pattern. Those who have been coming to this website, and commenting, for a long period of time (the boys club) are upset with the changes that are occurring. They want things to be like they used to be. There have been comments about “upstarts” such as myself having the temerity to argue with members of the “boys club”, or even the Administrator. There has been reminiscing about the past when knock-down drag-out verbal sparring used to occur. Now we have members of the “boys club” complaining about using Anonymous as a pseudonym. It seems like the “boys club” is transitioning into “the graybeards”. Keep in mind two things. First, life is change, not always for the better, get used to it and adapt. Second, insult or try to coerce the “newbies” at your peril. This site does not survive if people do not come here. I, like many of you, value this website and want to see it grow and prosper. Don’t destroy things because you don’t like change. As I said earlier, get used to it and adapt. The alternative is less palatable.

At times comments from members of the “boys club” are all too predictable. WGAF who you are? What you have to say will either live on in memory or go into the shit can in a New York minute. Be more objective and less subjective.

Anonymous comment are IMO an important part of free speech. If only we lived in a world where we could speak the truth and not have to worry about our life hoods, our families, or out friends getting hurt because we spoke the truth. But Today, we live in a world not like that. In places like California, speaking the truth can get you JAILED because even if you are speaking factual truth, what you say disagrees with power that be and thus even though it is proven fact, it is called disinformation.

I suppose you’re first talking to me, but also others on here. We are all pretty much anonymous to each other because of our various user names. There might be one or two who actually use their name, but they’re rare. In any case, on the outside any alphabet agency can see who we are if we aren’t doing the utmost to hide ourselves, ala Edward Snowden. I know how, but I haven’t met the right convenience yet. And I’m better off not describing it here, but let’s just say it involves much more than a VPN. With something like a VPN, you are still providing your ID through the serial number on your computer or mobile device along with IMEI and EID on mobile devices, so simply hiding your current IP address isn’t sufficient, because those like the NSA can simply follow you through the aforementioned identifiers. They’ll track those serial numbers all over the web, back to you, your friends, your associates, and your job, get FISA warrants to view all of your emails legally, including your contacts, then get warrants to check those people. Of course, you weren’t actually talking about being invisible, but in a way you were. No way, I’m giving my real name on here and I’d suggest no one does. The point most are trying to make, I think is we have let’s say on any given topic, 75 apparent Anons. We have no idea who they are as they have no idea who we are. Yet, those of us who are regularly here at least have familiarity with one another and we can give each other hell or a pat on the back or whatever. How’s the family, etc? So just like you, James (uh huh, not John Smith?) we can say okay you asshole, you are an idiot if you think this or that. Or cool, I like that too. AP. I was wrong in my assumption and I’m not afraid to admit it. I thought people might be not wanting to lose their jobs, and that was the reason for some anons. In these days, who could be surprised? I’m amazed that there are more than 400 comments and a lot are scathing. It sounds like you are right. Makes no sense if we’re supposed to be on the same team.
That said, Anon or another alternative will always be a screen name, and from what I’ve seen in more that 20 years, it’s a combination of wanting to spread the word and trolling.
20 years ago, I was a reg in a chat. I used an SN that was original to me. Anons substituted their SN with a dot. Sometimes we’d have 20 dots in the chat, or maybe one dot posting 20 times. Who knew? That’s when I’d leave.
In another instance, Quora used to have a real name policy, but they also had a way to ask or answer questions anonymously. Quora would actually request your DL or Birth Certificate if someone reported you. I decided to live dangerously. I used Leah as my first name and fuck the other stuff. Then Quora got rid of the Anon and real name policy. A lot of people I spoke with left when the real name policy was discontinued.
I think I’m rambling, now. It sounds like Anons are going to stay. I can’t let my blood pressure rise. Thank you for respectfully bringing it up in your post.

The best part I have seen of pseudo-anonymity is that it allows for face-saving. You say something dumb, you fuck up? Drop it. People will laugh and joke but you can retreat without an apologetic struggle-session or doubling down on your retardation.
