Charles Barron has annouced that he’s retiring from the City Council this year. All 51 seats in the Council are up for grabs this year.
He has done one good thing, which was to introduce legislation to preserve free healthcare for retired city employees. The employees (teachers, FDNY,EMTs,plumbers, there’s over 100 small unions of city workers) had always had employment contracts which gave them premium-free healthcare (choice of many different plans) while working & when retired; the city tried to make them pay for it starting two years ago. Three lawsuits, and several appeals decisions have given the retirees a win in court. Charles Barron introduced legislation that would guarantee those benefits.

I’m not new here; been here for a few years under other handles.
The thing about the healthcare is that city employees expected it to be there, even when retired. it was part of the contract. it’s not “free”, it’s deferred non-monetary compensation, that our labor paid for in previous years. It’s the same as if your employer took away your pension, or the federal gov took away your Social Securitry. It’s theft, plain and simple; in this case the theft was perpetrated by the city gov’t.
It’s odd to think that a Communist (yes he admits that) would stand up for workers, rather than for the centralized power structure that commie NYC gov’t has become. I don’t support anything else that Barron represents or supports, as I said “he did ONE good thing”
