Chinese Producers Market Share Plummets
Roughly 75% of the U.S. music product industry’s unit volume is generated by imported products, primarily from Asia. So, when import volumes collapse as they did in the second quarter, it sends an ominous warning signal. Total music imports for the three-month period ended June 30 fell year over year by an unprecedented 49%, dwarfing the declines posted during the 2008 financial crisis and the initial COVID shut downs in early 2020. Acoustic and electric guitar imports were both down by over 60%, digital pianos off by 68%, acoustic pianos off by over 40%, and live sound products down nearly 20%. The only significant category tracked that showed any improvement was bowed string instruments, up 12%.
Imports from China experienced even larger declines due to rising geo-political tensions, U.S. manufacturers looking to lessen their dependence Chinese suppliers, and the punitive tariffs levied in 2018 by the Trump administration. Chinese piano producers, which once held a majority share of the import market, saw their share collapse to a thirty year low of just 6% for vertical pianos and 12% for Grand Pianos. Chinese producers’ share of fretted instruments, percussion, and electronics imports also trended down, but not as sharply.
The cause of plummeting imports can be described as an acute post-pandemic hangover. Manufacturers were blindsided in mid-2020 by surging demand for all things musical. The resulting supply chain disruptions hindered efforts to ramp up production, as retailers, scrambling to fill empty shelves, flooded suppliers with orders. Many of the industry’s suppliers optimistically concluded that this vast cache of back orders was all shippable. They found out otherwise over the past eighteen months when retailers began cancelling orders as consumers shifted their spending priorities away from discretionary hardgoods towards travel, entertainment, and other services. The unhappy result has been an inventory glut of unprecedented scale, choking the retail channel, filling warehouses, and piling up in containers on shipping docks around the world.
Working down this mountain of unsold goods has not been pretty. Cash strapped suppliers are selling consumer direct online at near wholesale prices, pushing “B stock products” on the Reverb and Amazon marketplaces, and offering generous return privileges to induce mass merchants like Wal-Mart and Costco to stock up. A sizable number of independent retailers have been crushed by too much inventory and slowing demand, and there will no doubt be more casualties. These bloated inventory levels will eventually be right sized at a cost to profits, but the trajectory of the music products market going forward is uncertain. Will it return to pre-pandemic scale, growing in the low single digits, or will it reset at a lower level?
Demographic trends, persistent inflation, and long lasting music products point to a possible downturn. The 12 to 35-year-old age cohort, responsible for about 65% of music products sales, is trending down, as evidenced by shrinking K-12 and college enrollments. Inflation adjusted incomes are down over the past 30 months, eroding consumer purchasing power. Topping it off, there is also an enormous supply of used gear being traded online that adversely impacts the sale of new product and the retail channel.
While not discounting any of these challenges, never underestimate the resilience of the American consumer and economy, and the appeal of music. Over the past sixty years, there have been three sizable military engagements, seven recessions, a financial crisis, and numerous other calamities, yet the music products industry has consistently advanced. There have been setbacks along the way, but by any measure, the industry is larger and more prosperous today than at any previous point.
