It’s hard to explain to a layman, but yes tiny particulate can be captured by larger fiber structures. You do not need to have a sieve with respect to airborne particulate because the medium is not viscous. So, some of the arguments are over simplified and can be dismissed readily if you don’t understand it.
The masking narrative breaks down in other ways such as imperfect fit and sealing. Next is the stupid shit of people wearing a mask, touching it, then rubbing their eyes, nose or whatever. I would watch paranoid people walk into a restaurant, sit down and neatly fold their masks, and start eating with their fingers etc. When finished, they would unfold it and put it back on when clearly the exterior of the mask had come in contact with the face-side of the mask and just bust out laughing.
The next was building superintendents asking me to increase the efficiency of the filters in the air handlers as to catch finer particulate more efficiently. Ok I’m good with that because I make more money. Then I would ask them,since they perceive they have these convid viruses all in the enhanced filters, are your people changing them out going to be wearing hazmat suits? They would ponder it a little and just say something to the effect, we just need to show we are doing something. I’d smile and say give me your purchase order.
My point is these size comparisons can be rebutted as very tiny particulate are easy to capture because they don’t follow flow streamlines. But masks are fucking useless unless you are using a full face respirator. The whole thing of wearing a surgical isolation mask is fucking moronic. I designed them years ago.
Ironically, memes used to make fun of the people who would wear full face cartridge respirators out in public. As you point out, if worn correctly, these are actually the only masks that will stop a virus particle. No matter what, it’s still just the flu bro.
I had an interesting response from a nurse. She said they had been told at their hospital that yes, the covid particles are smaller than what an N95 mask is rated to stop. However, they claim that the droplets tend to bind together and form much larger particles, so the mask is capable of stopping a large percentage of what’s actually floating around. Many nurses like her at hospitals around Seattle are still wearing N95 masks voluntarily for this reason.
Lol, so the droplets are caught and the virus is no longer in the droplet as the water is diffused by evaporating on a high surface area fibrous matrix. Yeah, can the virus mutate without the droplet? That’s the shit that a nurse can’t answer. Because they are technicians
