Hmm…normally I prefer male voices over female, but I think Sinead wins this one.
Agreed, Abby, and I never cared for her.
No way the Wilson sisters could beat out Robert’s voice or Jimmy’s guitar playing (awesome custom guitar of Jimmy’s too). But Nancy (the blonde) is certainly nicer to look at.
And not a comparison song, but just a great performance before the jab killed their drummer (doing the singing).
I agree, but then I’m a die in the wool zeppelin fan. The Wilson sisters do a good job though.
Well, obviously the Zeppelin members like them or they wouldn’t have been invited to do this:
Great theme today.
IMO, it’s a tough call on
Sound of Silence and Fast Car.
Both version have merit, but that’s not always the case, as some covers are hack jobs, for lack of original creativity with new composition.
Musical tastes vary.
That’s the beauty of it, as fans.
I rarely expect others to enjoy my playlists anymore with that same satisfaction i enjoy.
Casual observers might think I’m having a seizure, while attempting air guitar, keyboards, or drums, when rocking out to a staple in my stable of audible pleasures.
To each their own.
Edit/Add: Vocal talent and dancing grooves are other characteristics where skills are questionable, in some views.
Liquid courage releases the mental shackles of inhibition, at times. All in fun, or attempts to revel in it.
Suppose it’s better than being a sloppy, angry drunk.
Cheers! 🍻🍷
A bad dancing drunk who thinks he is Fred Astaire (that would be me) is MUCH preferred to the angry drunk every day of the week. 😉
“When she got on the dance floor, it looked like she’d just walked through a cobweb at face level while heading to the bar for another libation.”
That is the one you hit on after midnight.
Rock on! Never heard the bottom version. I like it!
Never knew they did a cover. Great version. They truly made it a Saxon song.
Jimi hands down. Virtually EVERY cover of a Dylan song was better – for the vocals alone.
Agreed … but without Bob Dylan, Jimi wouldn’t have had anything to sing here …
Bob was a great songwriter and poet…just not a great singer.
Jimi hands down
Shocking Blue. Cleaner, crisper. Not muddied with excessive noise.
Better vocals, and instruments in the original.
She’s got it.
Yeah, Bebe, she’s got it.
Their politics aside, Simon and Garfunkle – outstanding vocal harmony, a critical item in making it better.
Luke Combs – anyone would win out to someone that reminds you of that treasonous liar Karine Jean-Pierre.
Johnny Cash – you can feel the hurt in his voice from the minute he first opens his mouth.
Bananarama – Just a great sound from those three. And their looks don’t hurt either.
Gloria Gaynor – the other clowns sound like they are trying too hard to sound like Weezer.
The Cranberries – Always loved her sound (but a very tragic story and hats off to Bad Wolves for all they did)
Neither – don’t care for the music
Green Day -but truly neither of them were working class heroes or should be singing about them.
I think the best version of Hallelujah was Jeff Buckley’s. How he holds those notes for so long is amazing.
Not featured, but I really love Pentatonix version of this song. I know, I know, people here do not like their sound. Just incredible to me that they can pull it off so well a cappella-style.
I was going to post that version, too … but a brain fart got in the way … and, poof, it was gone.
All good, but DAC wins.
Yes, agree. He’s my favorite with this particular song.
I have both in my daily driver playlist:
Darius has a great voice and it’s well produced. I like it quite a bit.
But Old Crow Medicine Show does it in the old Appalachian style, the real sound of country music, and I wish there were a lot more of that these days. The spirit of Mother Maybelle stills lives, but its shrinking back to the hills, hollers and local fairs that it came from.
Agree, kfg. Darius’ version is not bad, but just something about that twangy blue grass sound I like better from OCMS. I will be seeing them play live soon.
Floyd. But the guitar solo by Godsmack was outstanding.
Neville Brothers.
Yes. I think Uncle Kracker did an excellent job, too.
I think he sounds like a hack compared to Dobie.
Oh God, Johnny Cash for sure. No one compares to him.
Here’s a heavily-covered song with a few very different options. Personally as someone in college during the 80s, the Soft Cell version is the one I know best and liked when it came out (the disturbing images of the band members aside). I was also blessed to discover great music BEFORE the advent of MTV and during the time when what a band sounded like was more important than what they looked like or how well-made their videos were.
Soft Cell. Marilyn Manson scares me. I feel like I’m looking at the devil, or that he’s gonna bite my neck or something. Just too freaky for me.
I like “Tainted Love” by Broken Peach, different, but haloweeny cool.
Martika.
Saw them in a local bar many years ago. Fun band.
Oh yeah, good one. I like Israel better. In fact, I love it – have it on my playlist & hear it often. But I like Louis Armstrong a lot, too. You just can’t be unhappy listening to this music.
Dude needs to cut back on the SPAM.
Too late, he already died of spam, but he left that wonderful song for us.

Gary Jules. Tears for Fears version is too fast for the tone of that song.
CRTC* Mandatory and Topic-Specific Canuck Content:
*Canuck Radio and Television Comunistas; force feeding you Canuck content till you puke since 1976…..
Pretty faithful rendition from Pantera.
Bad Wolves and Cranberries is very close almost a tie, but I lean towards Bad Wolves. She was supposed to sing with them but she unfortunately passed before they could make the video.
Gotta to with Dolores on that. Her voice, her presence, captivating and powerful.
I know some Floyd purists are gonna hate this.
I’m a sucker for steel guitar…. HOWEVER… Hard pass on this one.
With that said, it should be known I am extremely biased regarding this particular song.
Nobody trying to copy these two, Thank God.
I’m a Kenny Wayne Shepherd fan but I think Five Finger Death Punch really jazzed up his song. In my opinion a successful cover is one where the song is changed enough to make it have a new sound, like Disturbed did with Sounds of Silence.
Agreed – “Where the song is changed enough to make it have a new sound”. Something like this example, same atmosphere and vibe (dark) but with a new sound. The cover really takes off at the end (9:50 mark):
“Shame on the Moon” Rodney Crowell
Shame on the Moon” bob seger
Bob Seger hands down. Generally I like the original better, this is the one I think the remake is better.
Eruption as the lead in to the Van Halen version also makes theirs the best. But the Kinks are in the tops of great bands overall, so…
Had the pleasure of seeing Dio on the Holy Diver tour, so have to go with him for the great vocals and Blackmore on guitar.
Here is Angela Cervantes with Brit Floyd. I saw them with her in Atlanta. She was even better in Altanta than on this recording. Those who know the solo know how near perfect she is.
Gotta go with the original, but Sarah certainly has the looks. John Lennon once said that he thought this was the best song he had ever heard. He was seriously high on LSD at the time though.
Here she is doing another classic.
