In this day an age there are never any shortages of people willing to make excuses for the way things are.
When I became a Civil Engineer 50 years ago, pavement design and drainage design were inseparable disciplines, requiring expertise in both to design either. Not any more. Today, most Civil Engineering colleges don’t even require engineers to be able to read engineering drawings, much less create them. That’s for lowly CAD technicians who point out their errors when plans don’t align with profiles.
I managed the construction of a large electrical substation for the DOE which flooded regularly because the drainage system it connected to was at a higher elevation than the substation drain pipes. Not one engineer noticed during plan review.
Shocking, but not surprising.
After 40 years in industry I was convinced engineers are taught to put the drain highest low place.
Scenario:
Four local non workers see a huge puddle everytime it rains at this location.
One gets an idea “Hey, wouldn’t it be funny if we filmed ourselves ‘draining the puddle’ using ladles and a five gallon bucket?”
Next one “Ooh, we have safety vests, let’s do it.”
Next one two “We could post it online and tell people it’s a real job!”
And off they go, three of them pretending this is a real job, while one of them films.
