Police accountability is key to making Philly safer | Editorial

District Attorney Larry Krasner’s progressive policies have been blamed for the spike in gun crimes, murders, retail thefts, and lootings across Philadelphia. He has clashed with police and with Republicans in Harrisburg who tried to impeach him, and is a regular whipping boy for right-wing media, including Fox News.

Krasner has his faults, but he deserves praise for his relentless pursuit of justice for those wrongly convicted of crimes. Since he took office in 2018, nearly 40 people have been exonerated, thanks to the Conviction Integrity Unit he created.

Illinois has a registration law that says all scary looking guns must be registered by Jan. 1, 2024. Right now 1/10 of 1% of known gun owners have done so. Governor Smirking Pig Face says it’s not surprising, Illinoisans don’t own guns like that. Governor Smirking Pig Face may have a future in higher office if he can ignore and spin realities he created like that.

Migrants move into Boston’s AIRPORT as ‘sanctuary city’ runs out of beds for them and Dem. governor warns border crossers that her state is ‘full’

Migrant families were seen sheltering at Boston Logan International Airport as the city continues to struggle with the sharp rise in demand for shelter.

People were sleeping on benches with blankets over their heads and mothers were seen holding their infants inside the airport terminal.

The migrants are said to have arrived on a flight from San Antonio, Texas and their items were seen scattered across the floor.

Governor Healey, a Democrat, warned others who are contemplating going to the Massachusetts that there is no more room.

The U.S. Army recruitment booth at Anime NYC 2023.

Anime NYC is currently happening in Manhattan’s Javits Center. Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the three-day anime and general nerdy convention between Nov. 17-19. Some of those people are with the U.S. military.

At least two branches of the armed forces are at Anime NYC. Not to sit in on any panels, watch screenings of new anime films or pick up some Gundam model kits — well, not explicitly anyway — but to recruit. The U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps both have booths at the convention.

Chicago Crime Rate Hits Post-Covid Record-Up Almost 60 Percent in 2023

how much worse it may get in 2024 as the legal system continues to align with Illinois’ SAFE-T Act implemented two months ago.

Democrat Gov. JB Pritzker signed HB 3653 THE SAFE-T (Safety, Accountability, Fairness, and Equity- Today) ACT into law saying, “Transforming the pretrial detention system so low-income people aren’t thrown behind bars while only the wealthy walk free, diverting low-level drug crimes into substance-treatment programs and reducing excessive stays in prison.”

The result is the release, on no bail, of those awaiting a court date accused of certain felonies including, “second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and arson without bail, as well as drug-induced homicide, kidnapping, burglary, robbery, intimidation, aggravated DUI, aggravated fleeing and eluding, drug offenses and threatening a public official.”

The elimination of cash bail was set to go into effect on Sunday, January 1, 2023, but the state’s highest court halted the reform, delaying implementation until September 18, 2023.

Who’s Buying Nebraska? Corporations, investors grabbing giant chunks of Nebraska farmland

Seven out-of-state buyers, including a Utah church, a Philadelphia corporate farm and a California investment fund, spent nearly $250 million in the past five years on pricey Nebraska farmland, FFP analysis shows…

The single biggest buyer scooping up the largest amount of ag land in Nebraska is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon Church, through a nonprofit tied to a P.O. box in Utah.

And, increasingly, small local farmers like Bill Alward strike out. Alward moved to his wife’s native Nebraska a few years ago and started a small operation, where he raises dozens of cattle and hogs near Fort Calhoun.

He’s trying to expand. He can’t afford it…

The average price of Nebraska farmland has shot up 41% since 2018, to a record-high $3,835 per acre, according to a University of Nebraska-Lincoln annual survey.

The buyers of that land – especially the biggest chunks – include multinational corporations, out-of-state corporate farms and investors who live hundreds or thousands of miles away, according to five years of land sales gathered by a UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications data journalism class and analyzed by the Flatwater Free Press.

Seven of the top 10 buyers who spent the most money in the past five years – often for pricier farm ground or suburban development – are located outside Nebraska, the analysis shows…

But even as land barons like Richards and Scully became rich and infamous, it remained possible for Nebraskans to make a living on small plots of land that they owned and passed through generations.

Hooper-area farmer Sharon Thernes, 85, remembers that her father raised a family of four children on 80 acres. He grew crops and raised cows, chickens and pigs on that land.

Today, she says, it would take 10 times as many acres to support a family of that size. And that land today would be lined almost exclusively with row crops, she said…

Thernes’ grandson Tyler now runs the day-to-day operations on her farm. He also purchased 74 acres of land for himself three years ago.

Thernes has spent a lifetime heading out on the family farm “at two o’clock in the morning to see if the cow is having her calf and carry it to the house to warm it up.”

She’s not optimistic that her family will retain that full control – that independence – for many more generations to come.

“Eventually … it will be huge conglomerates that are owning the farm,” Thernes said. “… and our grandchildren will be employees.”
