True cost of charging an EV is equivalent to paying $17.33 a gallon of gas, per new report

By Olivia Murray

In October, I wrote an essay on a “bombshell report” from a Texas think tank “which revealed that the actual cost of rechargeable cars and the E.V. industry is, in reality, much higher than they’re leading us to believe.”

The report is around 20-pages long, so I was only able to cover one of the explosive revelations—the average battery-powered car (E.V.) would cost “approximately $48,698 more to own over a 10-year period” were it not for the “staggering” handouts from the taxpayer via an extortionary and feckless government—but there were more.

Now, not only were the energy experts able to quantify the additional cost over time, but they were also able to put a dollar amount on the real cost of charging the vehicle, translated into price per gallon of gasoline. As you might guess, the price is astronomical, but that’s not the end of it; from an item published by the New York Post:

While EV advocates claim charging costs are equivalent to $1.21-per-gallon gasoline, the real amount is an order of magnitude more.

Including the charging equipment, subsidies from governments and utilities and other frequently excluded expenses, the true cost of charging an EV is equivalent to $17.33-per-gallon gasoline — but the EV owner pays less than 7% of that.

So if the E.V. owner pays less than 7% of that massively inflated cost to “fuel” a car, that means more than 93% of the financial burden falls on the taxpayer—as the NY Post authors also write:

This is socialism for the rich: a transfer of costs from higher net-worth individuals to middle- and lower-income taxpayers.

It’s the equivalent of levying taxes and fees on public-transportation users and those who walk or bicycle to work and using the money to reduce the price of gasoline.

At this stage, E.V.s, if forced to stand on their own, are an utter failure, and as I noted in my previous blog, bad ideas and inferior products only find security in a “free” market… rigorously controlled by big government fascists. If our market were truly free, an extremely expensive car that can spontaneously combust, only works in a limited temperature range, occasionally malfunctions and locks occupants inside before rolling backwards into bodies of water, and costs $17.33 per “gallon” to “fuel” up, would be dead on arrival—as it should be.

I pulled into a large parking lot a few weeks ago and there were 5 EV charging stations being used. There were 3 cars waiting in line for their turn at the charger. As I pulled into my spot I was face to face with one of the guys waiting in line. I made eye contact with him, put a big ‘ol smile on my face, and shook my head. He looked away.
I ran into the store and came back out 10 minutes later and he was still there, hadn’t moved. He saw me coming and wouldn’t look my way. I love it.

Larson had a strange mind and generated some very funny toons. I have a site with all his stuff on it and I go there at least once a week to refresh my sense of silly.

Holy shit, 15 explosions in 59 seconds? Got to get one of those. Park it close to someone I really hate.

This is actually a truck transporting propane (or similar) tanks that had a collision. Happened in Russia. All those black objects laying around or flying through the air are gas cylinders. Truck caught fire, and when their tanks get hot enough, BANG!

I swear to God what the fuck is wrong with the people. It’s like a fucking cult because no person with a fully functioning brain would do this. Sorry if you have an EV. Come to your senses. Sell the fucking thing and cut your loses. Trust me, you’ll be much happier in the end.

My BIL had an outlet installed in his garage to charge the children’s cars when they come to visit and I asked him where the meter was.
It never occurred to him to attach a meter, where it would have been the first thing after wire size to want to think about.
I would want to know the math behind anything I was rolling the dice on.

You can add an emon demon anytime as long as you have room to attach the coils.

If BIL cares enough, but the cost of the emon may be more than what he spends on kids, so who knows?
Not me, but there it is.

Adding a meter usually involves the local electric utility company … and it’s a multi-thousand dollar investment for — in this situation — zero ROI.

You can buy your own meter and box on ebay.
I encourage all that own an EV to meter the power outlet for their EV to do their own math.

I have no desire to make anyone feel stupid
I do want EV owners to be able measure energy use as compared to ICE vehicles, and that’s just energy use, not factoring in utility, reliability, situational aspects, etc, etc..

I would like the dummies to understand that more fossil fuel energy is required to make the damn EVs than ICE vehicles. The stupid is strong out there. They think charging them with wind turbines and solar panels is “green”, those freaking items require massive inputs of fossil fuels, to manufacture. In fact more energy is required to make a wind turbine than they will ever produce. The disconnects are beyond any rational thought.

I was driving through Quebec, Canada, over the Canadian Thanksgiving, I saw more EVs than anywhere else I have been. Several different makes and models, from Tesla’s to Hyundai’s. My first thought was Quebec gets real cold in the winter and also gets a lot of snow. Apparently rational thought is lacking in Quebec.

Do EVs have good resale value? I do not know but I am going to guess they do not. I do know replacing the battery pack in an EV is expensive.

One make I saw has an 8 year warranty and the battery replacement is about $20,000 at todays costs. Pretty much makes resale a very risky purchase.

New EVs with swappable batteries are coming out.
But that does not address the power gen/trans problems.

Can you imagine how much real estate will be needed to build battery swap stations in say..Los Angeles?
Or Taiwan?
