The ones we played on did not have the steel plate and you could get in the middle to push. A friend found out that was a good way to break your leg on the last day of school. His summer was spent in a cast.
My elementary school had a MASSIVE jungle gym that was at least 20 feet high, 15 feet wide 40 feet long and had a long platform at the top with 2 firepoles on either end that you slid down to the bottom. Dozens of broken bones over the years from the uncoordinated rag dolling themselves down through the bars. HUGE swings that were actually terrifying. More dozens torn and maimed trying to fly the furthest onto pea gravel. Several “Not so merry” go rounds like the one pictured where injuries were the rule, not the exception. Zero shits were given…..Until Comet Nanny State swooped too close and it all went extinct in an instant.
Our monkey bars were probably 10′ high and no platform, but we did have some pretty tall swings that we would bail out of at maximum height. Also some teeter-totters that would slam your butt into the ground if the lower person bailed at an inopportune time. The playground was no place for pussies and I loved it.
When I was in 7th grade, a friend had a bike accident and got a concussion while riding another guy’s bike and the family decided to sue the bike owner’s parents & the manufacturer. The lawyer called me to ask some questions and my Dad insisted on being on the line. The lawyer kept trying to get me to say the bike was dangerous and I insisted that the kid did a stupid thing and got hurt. My Dad told the lawyer to pound sand after the 2nd time asking me the same question.
That was pretty much the same time that all of the playground equipment began to change. We can thank the lawyers for taking away some awesome experiences for the generations that followed.
