Romney, Cotton Propose Swap: E-Verify for Wage Hike

Guest Post by Joe Guzzardi

For those who doubt the inherent wisdom of the old adage that politics makes strange bedfellows, look at the unlikely union between Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Mitt Romney (R-Utah).

President Trump’s strong supporter Cotton and never-Trumper Romney jointly introduced the Higher Wages for American Workers Act. The legislation would gradually raise the federal minimum wage to $10/hr. To ensure that the higher wages are paid only to lawfully present workers, the legislation would mandate E-Verify. As written, the bill offers something for everyone – Democrats get the higher minimum wage they’ve been lobbying for and Republicans finally get E-Verify, the database program they’ve unsuccessfully pursued for decades.

More Employment-Based Visas Swiftly Approved, E-Verify Stuck ‘on the Table’

Guest Post by Joe Guzzardi

This weekend, President Trump, frustrated with her ineffectiveness, asked for and received the resignation of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. Just days earlier, the DHS secretary said in a nationally televised interview that issuing presidential executive orders to mandate E-Verify, to end birthright citizenship and to send U.S. troops to secure the border against the unprecedented migrant flow are options that are “on the table.” E-Verify would protect American jobs, while birthright citizenship and open borders are immigration pull factors that lead to population growth and soaring entitlement costs, straining the education and health care systems.

In addition to funding for a border wall and other border security measures, immigration hardliners are sure to push to include mandatory E-Verify in any immigration legislation considered by Congress. E-Verify is a (currently) voluntary program where businesses check job applicants’ Social Security numbers and other Information — potentially including “biometric” identifiers like fingerprints — against information stored in a federal database to determine if the job applicants are legally in the United States.

Imagine how much time would be diverted from serving consumers and growing the economy if every US business had to comply with E-Verify. Also, collecting the relevant information and operating the mandatory E-Verify system will prove costly to taxpayers.
