When the Government Plays God: The Slippery Slope from Abortions to Executions

Guest Post by John W. Whitehead

Abortion on demand is the ultimate State tyranny; the State simply declares that certain classes of human beings are not persons, and therefore not entitled to the protection of the law. The State protects the ‘right’ of some people to kill others, just as the courts protected the ‘property rights’ of slave masters in their slaves.”—Ron Paul

The government wants to play god.

It wants the power to decide who lives or dies and whose rights are worthy of protection.

Delve beneath the rhetoric and spin that have turned abortion into a politicized, polarized and propagandized frontline in the culture wars, and you will find a greater menace at work.

Abortion may be front and center in the power struggle between the Left and the Right over who has the right to decide—the government or the individual—when it comes to bodily autonomy, the right to privacy, sexual freedom, the rights of the unborn, and property interests in one’s body, but there’s so much more going on here.

The Left would suggest that unborn babies do not have constitutional rights and the only right that matters is a woman’s right to privacy in choosing whether or not to abort a pregnancy. The Right, while fixated on saving the lives of unborn babies, seems less concerned about what happens to those lives from birth to death.

EXECUTION

Should there be more or less executions in the USA for capital crimes? Is Amnesty International just perpetuating propaganda from the West by “estimating” that China executes thousands? How do they know?

According to a recent report from human rights group Amnesty International, 2015 saw a huge rise in the number of executions globally, the highest total since 1989. At least 1,634 people were executed worldwide with 90 percent of that number occurring in just three countries: Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

That’s excluding China and North Korea where precise numbers are a state secret. However, Amnesty still believes China executes thousands every year, making it the world’s top executioner. Despite the spike in executions, Amnesty reported that there is still some hope with four countries expunging the death penalty for good last year.

EXECUTION

China executes more people per week than the U.S. executes in a year. It appears no one is executed in Europe, Russia or South America. They must be so civilized.

Amnesty International compiles annual reports on the number of executions worldwide but China has been absent from its list since 2009 due to difficulties obtaining precise figures. However, the Dui Hua Foundation, a US-based rights group, has released an insight into something Beijing considers a state secret, placing the number of executions in 2013 at 2,400. China executes more people every year than the rest of the world combined and 2013’s number marks a 20 percent increase on 2012.

After China, the Middle East is the globe’s premier hotspot for the death penalty. Three countries – Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, accounted for 95 percent of the region’s 638 executions last year. Iran put the most people to death – 369. Iraq followed with 169 while Saudi Arabia executed 79. The United States comes fifth overall, executing 39 people in 2013.
