Surprise! Americans Will Work at Tony Resorts

Guest Post by Joe Guzzardi

For more than three decades, America’s skilled and unskilled workers have been forced to compete with a congressionally sanctioned influx of overseas employment-based visa holders. Year after year, the story that the Chamber of Commerce and cheap labor-seeking employers promote is the same; no matter the job that needs filled, qualified Americans are unavailable. To add more drama to their tales of woe, employers insist that unless the foreign-born workers arrive immediately, they’ll be forced into bankruptcy.

On Immigration, Trump Promises One Thing, Does the Opposite

Trump

Predictably, the Trump administration added 35,000 temporary H-2B visas that will allow foreign nationals to work in the United States during the summer season. The existing 66,000 H-2B visa cap is divided into lots of 33,000 per season. Therefore, a 35,000 increase more than doubles the normal 33,000 summer cap to 68,000 overseas workers who will take landscaping, lifeguarding, forestry, seafood and leisure industry jobs. In the process, the H-2B makes good summer jobs harder to get for American kids who could use the income to defray college tuitions, help support their families or buy a car.

Sanders

After getting routed in the Arizona, Illinois and Florida St. Patrick’s Day Democratic primaries, Sen. Bernie Sanders’ chances of becoming his party’s presidential nominee are effectively zero. But on his way to nowhere, Sanders pointed out to the debate audience how destructive guest worker visas are to the exploited foreign nationals to whom they’re issued.

In Rare Display of Nonpartisanship, Dems Join GOP in Pushing Back Against More Employment Visas

In what has become an annual display of businesses’ addiction to cheap labor, commerce leaders are lobbying the acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Chad Wolf, to increase the H-2B visa cap. The H-2B is a seasonal, temporary, nonagricultural visa with a current 66,000 cap, and is frequently used in landscaping, hospitality and construction industries – blue-collar jobs where wages have been stagnant for years. Last year, the cap was increased by 30,000 visas.

Trump, Hire American

During a campaign rally in Michigan on Saturday, President Trump pushed for more foreign workers to be imported to the United States to work blue collar jobs.

As Breitbart News reports, Trump said:

And for the farmers, okay, it’s going to get good. And we’re going to let your guest workers come in because we’re going to have strong borders, but we have to have your workers come in. You know, the unemployment picture is so good, it’s so strong that we have to let people come in. They’re going to be guest workers, they’re going to come in, they’re going to work on your farms, we’re going to have the H-2Bs come in, we’re going to have a lot of things happening but then they have to go out. Then they have to go out. But, we’re going to let them in, ‘cause you need them. You need them. [Emphasis added]

We need people to be able to come into our country, do your jobs, help you on the farms, and then they go out, they’re going to leave. Guest workers, we’re going to take care of that. Guest workers. Don’t we agree? We have to have them. We have to have them. [Emphasis added]
