DEFERRED MAINTENANCE & DUMBASSES

Where Universities, municipalities, states and the Federal government choose to spend their money matters. You can spend it on useless liberal arts bullshit, on gold plated pensions for union teachers, on school lunches for the FSA, on inner city mural programs, on diversity training, or on wars around the globe. Or, you can maintain your existing ancient infrastructure before it explodes.

A rupture of 93-year-old water pipe led to massive flooding on the campus of University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and parts of Sunset Boulevard, Tuesday, July 29. The floods which gushed about 75,000 gallons (283,906 liters) of water per minute damaged about a hundred cars and five buildings.

Some days I wish I could live for a hundred more years just so I can watch it all fully implode.

I thought Obutthole was going to make infrastructure a priority and create shovel ready jobs?

As more cities, counties and states go broke we will see much more of this.

That was funny on so many different levels.

First, it’s being reported by Russia Today. Second the Japanese girl on the cellie going “dis not tsunami like back home”. Then the fat dude on the cell phone riding the BBall zamboni in these big lazy circles like he’s doing something. Then all the firefighters standing around going “What? Like huh?”

Is there no cut off built into the system? Does the water come directly down a pipe from Lake Mead into the campus with no valve between?

Jesus, that was hilarious.

we’ll fix that fucking hole in the ground, no problem and it’ll be GOOD for the local economy. lots of new workers from central america will help. some have horrible diseases but we gonna deal with that, mkay? and that will be good business for the local hospitals too. get the economy going again.

Hardscrabble: “Is there no cut off built into the system? Does the water come directly down a pipe from Lake Mead into the campus with no valve between?”

The problem is the water has a lot of momentum. It has to be turned off slowly, otherwise you’ll break the pipe upstream.

The real problem is that the US has left the infrastructure go to hell. Many water mains / sewers / maintenance tunnels are over 100 years old. Instead of replacing aging systems, cities spend tax dollars on stadiums, diversity training, you name it. I see becoming a national problem in the coming years.

http://www.laweekly.com/informer/2014/07/30/la-tv-anchors-punkd-by-fake-dwp-spokesman-louis-slungpue-video

Most reporters in Los Angeles could tell you who the main L.A. Department of Water and Power spokesman is. He’s a City Hall veteran, and if you cover this town, you’ll have run across him.

But the odd-sounding name of this particular DWP spokesman didn’t appear to set off any alarms when he phoned ABC Eyewitness News yesterday to offer a live-on-air update to the UCLA-adjacent water main break.

The name he gave was Louis Slungpue (as in “slung poo”). And it went downhill from there:

Mr. Slungpue of the DWP said that crews believed the main break, which sent 8 to 10 million gallons of water onto the UCLA campus, flooding parking structures and athletic facilities, was caused by “a couple of college students might have sent down a cherry bomb down the toilet.”

That’s right. A glorified firecracker set this off and closed Sunset Boulevard.

“Wow,” one of the anchors replies. “Say that again. Somebody sent a cherry bomb down the toilet?”

Slungpue took his cue:

“Yeah,” he says. “We try to put on seminars yearly explaining how dangerous it is to send any kind of explosives down the plumbing drain.”

” … The cherry bomb must have popped through the top of the pipe and just blew the bottom right out,” he said.

He told the anchors that DWP crews believed the source was “one of the locker rooms” on campus.

The anchors continued digging a deeper hole for themselves. And, of course, Slungpue dropped his bomb, so to speak:

“It was either a cherry bomb or someone took a really large dump, you know,” he said.

One of the anchors says, “That is an incredible … are you 100 percent sure about that?”

And then you hear an off-camera voice almost whisper what we made out to be, “It’s a prank call.” An anchor tells viewers, ” … We lost him. I’m sorry.”

strongtowns.org covers this issue well. I’d recommend starting with their earliest podcast episodes or this article: http://time.com/3031079/suburbs-will-die-sprawl/?utm_content=buffer66f2c&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer

Bearing in mind the severe drought issues in that area, that is a lot of water (potable quality too) that they really cannot afford to waste.

Hopefully this is a very isolated incident, and equally hopefully this does not give those with malicious intent, “ideas” for “Future Projects!”
