CHINESE MIRACLE MY FAT A$$

The entire Chinese economic miracle is a debt financed farce. Their GDP growth is a fraud. Their burgeoning middle class are nothing but delusional lemmings. The whole tettering facade is going to collapse in an epic implosion. How can anyone not watch this piece and conclude that China and the rest of the globe are in store for a world of hurt? Even the smart Chinese billionaires know they are in the midst of a bubble. There is one absolute about bubbles. They ALWAYS pop. They don’t deflate slowly. I believe China’s bubble is popping as we speak and they are covering it up with fraudulent economic reports.

He’s showing us around the new eastern district of Zhengzhou, in one of the most populated provinces in China – not that you’d know it. We found what they call a “ghost city” of new towers with no residents, desolate condos and vacant subdivisions uninhabited for miles, and miles, and miles, and miles of empty apartments.

Lesley Stahl: Why are they empty? I’ve heard that they have actually been sold.

Gillem Tulloch: They’ve all been sold. They’ve all been sold.

Lesley Stahl: They’ve all been sold? They’re owned.

Gillem Tulloch: Absolutely.

Owned by people in China’s emerging middle class, who now have enough money to invest but few ways to do it. They’re not allowed to invest abroad, banks offer paltry returns, and the stock market is a rollercoaster. But 15 years ago, the government changed its policy and allowed people to buy their own homes and the flood gates opened.

Gillem Tulloch: So what they do is they invest in property because property prices have always gone up by more than inflation.

Lesley Stahl: And they believe it will always go up?

Gillem Tulloch: Yeah, just like they believed in the U.S.

Lesley Stahl: Giant cities being built with people not coming to live here.

Gillem Tulloch: Yes. I think they’re building somewhere between 12 and 24 new cities every single year.

Unlike our market driven economy, in China it’s the government that has spent some $2 trillion to get these cities built – as a way of keeping the economy growing. The assumption is “if you build it, they’ll come.” But no one’s coming.

Lesley Stahl: And it’s all Potemkin.

Lesley Stahl: So if the bubble bursts, who’s left holding the bag?

Gillem Tulloch: There are multiple classes of people that are going to get wiped out by this. People who have invested three generations worth of savings — so grandparents, parents and children – into properties will see their savings evaporate. And then, of course, 50 million construction workers who are working on all these projects around China.

Admin said “Centrally planned economy that only benefits the .01%.

Gotta love that Chinese capitalism. Ghost cities, ghost malls, ghost ports.”

What’s worse? A centrally planned economy that only benefits the .01% and the citizens know it or a supposed capitalist and democratically-planned economy(centrally controlled through the FEDERAL RESERVE) that only benefits the .01% and citizens who believe they have a choice?

C’MON!

As for those empty cities…TIME WILL TELL if those centrally planned cities actually have a plan behind them other than a focus on high GDP growth numbers!

like a scene from inception, the dollar keeps going deeper and deeper into the dream world in order to buy more time before it crashes. in the real world we see the usa printing billions of dollars while china has its currency pegged to the dollar. unfortunately, because the dollar is the world reserve currency, the usa is chasing its tail thinking it can drop lower than any currency that is pegged to the dollar.

As always, dear Leader and I are not really so far apart. The best battles are always over the details.

China is going to take some big hits. I think their fall will be relatively smaller than the US. They will fall from a lesser height, and the fall will be less as a percent. The US will, probably, hit a ledge that is still far higher than that on which the Chinese will come to rest. But it is relative.

And I believe the US is much more likely to have serious civil unrest than China. But I may be wrong about that. China will crush unrest like a bug on a windsceen. Unrest in the US could get really nasty, and would not be easily crushed if it were to go ballistic.

In the long-term, the enrgy thing is going to be a real problem for the Chinese. I am sure they have plans to address it. War? Buying resources? Coalitions? I do not know. It will be an ugly picture, though.

1. fucktitude

The degree to which one is fucked.
“Our plans were in a state of serious fucktitude when Dave’s car ran out of gas.”

On a relative scale based on the start point, I believe the US is fucked between 7 and 10, both short and long-term.. I think China is fucked short-term around 4 -7. Long-term, the energy issue combined with civil unrest will probably move China up the fucktitude scale to around 8 or 9.

Oh joy.

“The country’s economy is heading in the right direction. This is more important than achieving short-term growth,” said Paulson, who is also a former CEO of Goldman-Sachs.

Joining in the panel discussion, Dominic Barton, global managing director of McKinsey & Co, backed Paulson’s assessments, adding that the population shift from rural areas to cities is a positive factor for China’s continued economic growth.

“The good news is that there is an underlying force of growth and that’s urbanization. What we’re basically seeing is more than 250,000 people moving from rural areas to cities every week,” Barton said.

The problem with China is it’s endemic corruption. Everything is for sale. The old joke about from Asia Times sums it up pretty well.

In the U.S. everything above the table is for sale.
In Asia everything above and below the table is for sale
In China even the table is for sale.

Look when you have Lipoh’s beloved Chinamen selling all sorts of food products laced with toxic chemicals that send people to the hospital or morgue and complaining about it gets you a visit from the police for a beat down. You’re in a shit hole, not a utopia.

Or when you can buy a medical degree from B.U. for $3000 complete with transcripts. Go to outlying areas and you have these clowns practicing medicine on peasants. The wealthier people see real doctors. Not quacks who can’t read a X-ray or a blood panel. Then again I know some American doctors who are total fuckups and I wouldn’t trust them to babysit my pet rock.

We’ve caught them sending us poisoned Heparin that killed over a 100 people. It was deliberately tainted and sent out even though the Chinese knew it would kill people. Remember the tainted pet food?

In Asia Chinese food and medical products are viewed with hostile suspicion and for good reason. There is no quality control or FDA in China whatsoever. You want to grow garlic next to a river of toxic waste? Fine. Adulterate skin cream with a array of nasty chemicals? No problem.

IP protection? It doesn’t exist. Ask Fellows about that sometime or the European train makers who watched the Chinese copy their high speed trains badly and kill a lot of people. Integrated circuits – i can find knock-offs of most of them. Space program a complete rip off of NASA.

Is this capitalism? Yes. A ugly and dysfunctional sort that needs a rich patsy to make work. That means the U.S. as a dumping ground for their crap and someone to steal from.

Does it make them a world class power house? No. You need a intact and industrious honest culture like Germany’s not a gang of people acting like assholes who will lie, cheat and steal for a dollar.

They will fall, just like Japan but harder. I remember the Lipohs and AWD’s of the 1980’s who ran their mouths about how Japan was the model to emulate and look where are they today.

AWD overlooks the most important factor that will keep the US top dog while China remains #2 or worse. We have the military, the firepower, the navy and air force, and the overseas alliances and bases to keep China corralled and subordinate. As long as America has military spending as its number one budget priority, as long as the Neocons, the McCains, the Grahams, and their ilk are in the saddle, the United States will reign triumphant.

If we give in to the Ron Pauls, the Administrators, and the hand wringers, like my disalter-ego, Jackson, America will sink fast.

The Chinese scare me more than Admin thinks they ought to. Regardless of gold holdings (which I believe the Chinks are under-reported, US et. al. grossly over-reported), the Chinese have been purchasing infrastructure and influence world-wide. Sure, some of those investments might go sour, but oil from ME, coal & base metals from Australia, California real estate (yeah, they can have it, but it will still retain some value) and a buy in to the Arctic nations through investment in Iceland-this is capitalist imperialism at its finest. Bastards have their fingers in everything worldwide. And some, if not most, of those “investments” will pay off. On the relative scale of fuckitude, the Chinese are better hedged/diversified than any other.

Western politicians have one job — to get re-elected. It has nothing to do with what is right for the country.

The Chinese are planners — they aren’t thinking about how they can keep the boat afloat now. They have a game plan over the very long term. They have seen Admin’s charts and have a plan. Sure if the world goes into a depression they will be affected but they know their fuctitude is lower than Western countries and in the end they will come out far ahead.

In 10 years they will be bringing in Americans to do the shit jobs.

For me the big unknown is the longevity of the Chinese culture.

Our constant focus on the short-term – the decades of decisions made with little or no regard for how it all looks for the nation as a whole in generations to come – has been pitiful. Somewhere along the line TPTB decided we should be an Empire and our nation took a back seat to the people who could profit from front running the empire building.

The Chinese have attempted “empire” on more than one occasion and have more “lessons learned” then any American so I am keeping an open mind.

But the scale of the “ghost cities” amazes me – I work in facilities and the upkeep during a “mothball” situation is not inconsequential. To have built all that only to see it sit empty and unused is mystifying – all that energy and resources spent for what?

To keep the peasants occupied and paid?

To build necessary housing for the future?

And I asked earlier in the thread – did they build out the “jobs”, the manufacturing and the industry as well?

Well, maybe Japan can just load up boats with 70 million Nigerians and Liberians and pay them to live in Japan – and of course Nigerians and Liberians breed at much higher rates than Japs, so once the japs get their Black baby breeding colonies going, the demographic problem should be pretty much fixed. Then they can release a new demographic statistic showing how their youth population is growing, fuck yeah dry statistics rule — who cares about cultural consequences! Chinese could do the same thing, and import maybe 200 Million Indian youth, nice dark skinned South Indian Dravidians and then pay the Hindus to breed. Then they can beat you at your own statistic “proving” how we are flourishing because of our youth population v their dying old populations. Our European majority population of the past gave up and barely managed to reporduce at all. We have youth ONLY because of legal and illegal (mostly illegal) immigration. Duh.

Admin once again proves he’s utterly clueless, brainwashed by what he reads, seeing other countries through the filter of the MSM and financial media.

How the fuck can a country with 1.3 billion people have a demographic problem? Admin doesn’t think about what he posts, he just repeats what he reads elsewhere without thinking. He really has no idea what’s going on in China.

China is not an open society; Western media tries to read China with a microscope but it doesn’t work. Admin ignores the fact they got 55,000 of our manufacturing facilities, at least 8 million of our jobs, and 8 trillion of our dollars over the last two decades, or the fact that we’re $56 trillion in debt, or our currency is being debased daily, our politicians are bought off corrupt criminals. Our government lies to us every day, makes up data, tries to cover up the fact that we are bankrupt and insolvent as a nation. Just keep printing more money. Japan copied us, and look what’s happened to them.

Ghost cities cost money to build, but their government is paying section 8 subsidies for people to live in them. We’re paying for people to live in prime real estate for free. Maybe we should ship a few thousand section 8 recipients over to the ghost cities (at taxpayer expense).

BTW, this hasn’t even come close to a shitstorm (yet). I haven’t called admin any names yet.

“Especially the insect brainiac Porter:
You fucking plebe. Don’t quote fox with numbers and turn around and cast doubt. Even If gold holdings were under reported by 85% your story would not be factual.”

Um, Um, I wernt trying to be factual!

What good poker player lays all his cards out on the table for all to see? The Chinese invented poker, they know that advertising their moves will turn the worldwide resource collection game against them. No mystery as to why they under report their gold. No mystery either why the fed/gov over report their reserves. When the lack of gold reserves becomes public knowledge then the dollar manipulations end as people scramble to get out of ‘fly money’ & convert to real wealth.

The Chinese are a nation of workers and savers. Why they would put gobs of their savings into empty cities is beyond my little insect brain, but I would not be surprised if the China central bank were buying condos in order to prop up the illusion of prosperity. What the fuck is Murika saving? This is a nation of debt consumption and obesity investment. What future in that?

I’m not pro china, I just see the writings on the walls of my crystal ball. All thru history empires rise and fall. We’ve had our run and all the might of the US army ain’t gonna keep it going. China is up and coming, time for a stint at the top. World wide fiat money obesity is going to have heart failure and the ones with the most gold in savings will be the strongest when all the fog clears.

@Admin – it has nothing to do with hating any race or group more than any other, I am not a big fan of humanity in general (misanthrope, not a racist). That being said – each race and culture is different and unique. Multiculturalism destroys diversity. At what point is America not America anymore? You cannot switch majority race/culture/language in a country and have a foreign population of youth take over land from an elderly native population and call it a demographic victory. Ask Llpoh how that worked out for his people. Yeah, we have a new majority Mexican youth population in America. Whoopidty-freaking-do. How is that not suicide in every way for the now traditional Protestant Anglo-Teutonic foundation culture that made America… America?

China and Japan are aging and they will have some bad problems of supporting the aged population with a smaller pool of youth workers… BUT they will remain China and Japan in every sense (race, language, culture, traditions, history, etc). If solving a demographic suicide is as simple as importing millions of young people from a foreign land and culture to take over your country – then China and Japan could do that too. But they won’t, because they aren’t as stupid as we are.

SAH
SAH
August 14, 2013 11:15 am

You also cannot compare Japan and China. That is nearsighted assumption that Orientals are all the same. Japan gentrified quickly and no one wanted to be laborers and manufacturers anymore, and everyone wanted a clean, modern, easy life. Japan was doing great when they were a producer economy. They gave up on producing anything except cars (they still do well with cars, simply because they still bother to manufacture them). China’s population is still living very “sustainably”. They are still in the infancy of their industrial revolutions. Peasants are still the majority, living in the countryside and they can continue that lifestyle without a great disappointment of expectations. Putting former middle-class suburbanites into rural, peasant poverty is a big upset.

Everyone is also failing to understand the 1-child policy. It isn’t across the board – farmers all can have 2 children (if the 1st is female). 2 only-children can have 2 kids. Anyone else who can afford it pays the fines and has as many kids as they can afford. The 1-child policy is more of a multi-child tax. We stupidly pay for the least-capable to reproduce as much as possible. China discourages it through fines. The poor and destitute don’t have more than 1 child. The well-off have more. It’s very logical, and has been very successful. Now China is going to further relax the 1-child policy. Pointing to their “demographic problem” is like pointing out the sliver in their eye while ignoring the log in our own.

This whole thread is a gas (pain or smell?).

Everyone forgets one vital point. We owe the Chinese/Japanese/whoever tons of “money”? No manufacturing left in this country? We have over 200 trillion of unfunded debt?

No problemo! The U.S. Government will morph into whatever form it needs in order to survive. Owe money? Default on it and screw’em. Need manufacturing? We’ve got a whole underclass of welfare and fast food servers who will man the looms and dig the ditches (by hand) when the need comes (whether they want to or not!). Just adopt a “no workee, no eatie” policy.

The USA will turn into a fascist country and eventual dictatorship IN ORDER TO SURVIVE.. They will do whatever is required, from killing off old people to enslaving the young to retain power and control over the masses. Little at a time. Drip by drip. Bloody drop by drop.

Don’t fret China, they are flopping around like a fish out of water and have no clue what’s coming down the pike. We’ll simply leave them holding a bag full of worthless debt. Along with everyone else.
