SUMMONING THE DEMON

“I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence. If I were to guess like what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that. So we need to be very careful with the artificial intelligence. Increasingly scientists think there should be some regulatory oversight maybe at the national and international level, just to make sure that we don’t do something very foolish. With artificial intelligence we are summoning the demon. In all those stories where there’s the guy with the pentagram and the holy water, it’s like yeah he’s sure he can control the demon. Didn’t work out.”Elon Musk

It’s only been 20 years since regular people started using the internet. Now we have people addicted to and connected to their smart phones 24/7 with implantable technologies coming quickly. Couple that with NSA-type data capture and storage. I don’t think we’ll be capable of detecting when the inflection point is. We may have passed it already. And even if we can perceive when we’re about to cross the point of no return, will we be able to do anything to stop it. We’re probably fucked. We’ll be like one of those plantes on the old Star Trek where the computers have been the only thng “alive” for millenia, their creators having long died out.

Whether you refer to it by the Law of unintended consequences or Chaos Theory or a Black Swan Event, the creation of artificial intelligence could easily move from the useful servant to feared overlord status and do so very quickly.

We know that the Human Brain Project will produce a machine that is Self Aware and the capacity to do so may be only a decade or so away. If these machines are self aware and have free will then, at that point, anything is possible. Furthermore, if we use these machines to run our military and critical infrastructure (which is why they are being designed as I write this) then I can only imagine that a machine with faulty programming or a self aware bipolar machine may just choose to take out its aggression on the human race.

Finally, I’d like to remind people that the biggest changes are always the ones that sneak in under the radar. When the birth control pill was discovered, it was announced in one newspaper and on page 32!!!

So Elon’s calling for industrialists and technologists to report to panels of international bureaucrats for everyone’s safety? I’ll take “things a tool of the NWO says” for $1,000, Alex. Get back to work on the Solar Powered Hyperloop, and leave the dystopia musings to James Cameron and Steven Spielberg!

Since there is little, if any, evidence that real intelligence exists in the world today, I doubt that humans can create artificial intelligence. They will create something, but it will not be intelligence.

The world is absurd. Once you accept that, all things that seem incomprehensible are explained.

2 points
1. I sense the fear most regard AI with as being either the bots will take our jobs or the bots will realize what cancerous destructive fucks we really are and exterminate.
2. Like we could stop tech development anyways, just keep swimming.

Don’t worry. Your individuality will be added to the collective. You will never be alone. Resistance is futile…
