What I’m really amazed at is how….or why, there is no walk-in clinic, body shop, tow truck, and car rental joint like, right there – oh, and a pay day advance w/ATM, pawn, and ‘sell a body part for $$$$’ shop too.

And…the car MUST have very good brakes

1. I would have guessed there were maybe 10 cars in all of Ethiopia. Surprise.

2. You need a car with excellent acceleration. Admin and his pedal-powered rice-burner would be toast in 3.0 seconds.

3. They are pretty awesome drivers. Not ONE accident in that clip!!

Stucky darling, It would be great if you would take a short (10 day) visit to any country in Africa – well, you may not last 10 days but anyway. You would hate the inconveniences and lack of order but maybe, you would notice the wild wild west kind of freedom that everybody has. No one is trying to control the masses. You are responsible for yourself – PERIOD! They stand guard and survive. Here in America, everything is so prepackaged, preset, so organized for you, you don’t have to figure out anything. These drivers you see in this video live on a 360 degree alert system in driving and in life.
They know they are toast if they are not alert and aware of their surroundings. There is no buffer, no welfare system. If you are on an edge and fall, you are mince meat and get thrown in the trash pile if you have no family.

A few years back I was in Buenos Aires, 12 lanes of traffic with 15 lanes of cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles and pedestrians, it was as if the lines on the road or traffic lights were just a suggestion.

We traveled by car to Gualeguaychu, up to Montevideo and back to our hunting destination.
All the while I thought Argentinians were crazy drivers, everybody yelling, honking, cutting each other off or simply forcing your way like a NASCAR driver. Argentinians are Pikers.

That video was crazy!!

Is there some national law that says if you own a van, you have to paint it blue and white?

Watch the video again and try to count the identical blue and white vans… I dare ya. I double dog dare ya…

Police Dispatch: “Calling all cars, the 1st National Unga Bunga Chicken Bone Bank of Ethiopia has just been robbed. Suspect fled the scene in a blue and white van..”

Jeeez… there’s sure to be a wreck, people are going to be hurt, and someone’s likely to get killed with those Africans driving like crazies.

What Ethiopia needs is much, much more government regulation.
Traffic lane markings, stop lights and signs, car inspections, driver qualification tests, police cars and policemen, ticketing for careless drivers, safety strips… and I could go on.

American experience has shown that only smothering directives and relentless enforcement control society effectively. People won’t behave properly without government always looking over their shoulders. The Addis Ababa traffic video shows that.

DAMN, they’re GOOD!!!

Libertarian traffic non-regulation works!

Ever see what happens at a major intersection in an AMERICAN city when the power goes and the traffic lights don’t work? You usually get at least three wrecks, and lots of fights and screaming. Talk about fucked up- I experienced it one night decades ago and I’m still surprised I somehow made it across 8 lanes without being knocked all over the intersection onto the sidewalk.

Having actual lanes is so eurocentric. keep in mind, Ethiopia is the good part of Africa (other than Capetown).

They don’t need no stinking traffic lanes.

Africa may be f@#ked up but the USSA is fubared also. Usually because of folks that look just like those Africans.

@Chicago – Whenever lights go out in my area we all clockwise taking our appropriate turn to pass through the intersection.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an accident at a broken light in this town.

Nope, but I lived in San Salvador, El Salvador for a year when up to 1/2 of the traffic lights didn’t work at any given time due to rebel attacks on the power grid. Not one American in the U.S. embassy escaped without an auto accident. No exceptions.

This is only impressive because it is sped up so much. If the video could be slowed down to the actual speed you would probably find it very uninteresting.

@Billy — the blue and white vans are taxis.
