Comment from a genealogist on another blog: “can you imagine when someone in 2100 looks back at old census records that are in cursive? It will appear like a foreign language.”

Same thing happened with Latin, German gothic or Suetterlin, Olde English and Lord knows how many other languages throughout history. Even the Chinese had to simplify their symbol-based language to increase literacy.

Makes you wonder where it will all go.

I remember when we were taught to use our fingers to type…..now tech has us using our thumbs.

Ol’ Rick had this signature that looked like a sleeping tornado.
The ol’ boss had yet to master cursive and therefore printed his name.
He printed everything he wrote by hand, but he used caps fOr efFecT an couldn’t write a whole word without mixing in caps. I blamed California.

The typewriter destroyed penmanship more than a hundred years ago. Just look at legal documents from the 19th century and observe that they were written in beautiful cursive. Today it is as obsolete as a buggy whip. It matters not in what form ideas are expressed but rather the quality of them.

Zarathustra says: It matters not in what form ideas are expressed but rather the quality of them.

You said a mouthful, Zebra. Just the other day I was telling Bob that I prefer good ideas over personality.

Cursive? I always printed..down know how that wrecks penmanship…thousands of pages of law, often cursive hen scratch would leave Pelosi saying, “we don’t know what’s in the bill even when passed.”

Stucky says: Fuck cursive!!!

Stucky, the Declaration of Independence and other precious documents of our history were written in cursive. There is an effort to not teach cursive, most likely so in a generation or two younger folks won’t be able to read those important documents. Part of the slow death of the republic.
