Last week I talked about the possibility (likelihood?) of Barnes&Noble eventually going belly up, and Hewlett Packard laying off 30,000. Monday we celebrated dad’s 91st birthday, but my brother-in-law was all stressed out about possibly losing his job at Johnson Controls … they are laying off 3,000 people and will split the company in two. Caterpillar just announced 10,000 layoffs. Halliburton will be shedding 30,000 jobs. Coca Cola will be closing 9 US plants. Deutsche Bank will shed 25% of its workforce. Seagate Technology will say “Auf Wiedersehn” to 1,100. Groupon is cutting 1,100 jobs. Even ESPN will be firing 300 people. I’m a gonna have to confine myself to Fux Newz or Jim Cramer cuz they say the economy is doing just GR-R-R-R-REAT!!

Strangely, no one commented all week about this PSYCOPATH ASSHOLE. I don’t expect the likes of you to process that.” In an interview with CBS News on Tuesday, Shkreli described his decision to boost the price of a lifesaving drug he purchased the rights to by more than 4,000% as “altruistic.” He’s done this before. He acquired the rights to Thiola, a drug used to treat the rare disease cystinuria …. and increased the price 20-fold, despite no additional research and development costs incurred by obtaining these rights. There’s a new form of justice arising in Peru called ‘Chapa Tu Choro‘ – meaning, “catch your thief”. It was started by Cecilia Rodrigues — a housewife from Huancayo. She started a Facebook campaign to dish out vigilante justice. More than 100 separate Facebook groups have sprung up in recent months. Punishments range from being stripped naked, to public floggings, to eating raw chili peppers. One video (out of hundreds) shows a woman undressed and being walked through a busy street, with a banner around her neck reading ‘I’m a thief‘. Another shows two whimpering alleged pickpockets being forced to stand on anthills until they beg for mercy as the insects bite their legs, feet and testicles. This is happening for a simple reason: people have lost faith in the police to reduce crime, and so they believe these public acts of retribution are the best way of deterring would-be muggers or burglars. The campaign continues to gain support across Peru, with a recent survey finding that 53% of the population approve of the new way of dealing with criminals. And with not a single prosecution of any vigilantes so far, civilians meting out justice will only continue to increase, and some fear, the justice will become even more violent.

MONKEY SELFIE CAUSES PETA TO GO APE-SHIT

Sorry, but as someone who spends a fair bit of time in Perú, I’m on board with the “Chapa tu Choro” campaign. Anyone who remembers Abimael Guzmán and the Shining Path and what they did in Perú understands that criminals can’t be made into a protected class. Look for a significant drop in street crime. I’m now looking forward to the “Chapa tu Político” campaign to come.

In my question of the day regarding vigilantism I basically agreed with the idea IF the authorities failed to do the job. That appears to be the case in Peru.
My concern is this; it appears to be getting out of hand in Peru. From stories I’ve read, it seems to have devolved into some sort of competition …. almost like a Salem Witch Hunt, trying to find a “witch” where none exist.
Also, the punishment often doesn’t fit the crime. Take the Mexican car thief as an example …. torture AND burning him alive!! Really? Is that a solution that makes society better?

Yes, I realize this could easily get out of hand, although Perú is very different from Mexico and to my knowledge there has been no killing or burning or anything like it. I read the main Lima metropolitan daily (El Comercio) and haven’t seen anything to the “witch hunt” effect, but sure, it could happen. My girl friend lives in the most secure area of Lima (Miraflores, lots of tourists, lots of cops, lots of “serenos”, a kind of quasi-cop), so ain’t much “chaping” goin’ on there, but yeah, it could easily get out of hand. My guess is that it mostly takes place in working class neighborhoods and the really nasty slums of which there are far too many. Go out to the countryside towns, the mountain villages, probably not so much if at all. Spent some time in one of those towns and after eleven at night, walking all around, it’s mostly you and the stars above because everyone else is at home. No sense of insecurity at all, more like being in Ozzie and Enriqueta, Beeber Cleeber land with the scent of wood smoke.
Mexico, well, anything goes, which is why I went.

I have always felt that Eminent Domain should only be used by governments for projects needed by the government and used for the benefit of the populace, not private enterprise. You know things like Freeways, Forts, Gov Buildings, etc.
I feel that Eminent Domain used for private purposes (enterprises) should have to pay 5 times fair market value at the time the payment is made to the owners of the property, This would fairly compensate the owners of the property for having their lives disrupted and only those projects that are really important to corporate entities would go through.
I, also, feel that if a gov entity secures a property under Eminent Domain and doesn’t use it for the stated purposes and the gov entity decides to sell it, that the original owner has the the ‘right of first refusal’.
This would go a long way in ridding the system of corrupting corporate-government collusion infesting the Redevelopment agencies thru out the country.
But, I guess, the nut jobs on the Supreme Court will find a way around it.
