Within just four short hours though, the protective uncle was released after being charged with willful personal injury. The Muslim, on the other hand, still remains in custody.

I would agree (on the premise that “A kind word and a gun will get you further than a kind word alone”), but I’m prepared to allow that a .22 LR to the *os frontalis* will serve quite as well in deterrence at common combat ranges while being more manageable in the hands of a woman less practiced (and of lower average wrist strength) than is the average male pistolero.
Not to mention the fact that such a handgun chambered in .22 LR is apt to be less weighty, less expensive, cheaper to practice with (why do people always seem to ignore the need to *practice* with these life preservers?), and less likely to result in overpenetration when used.
In addition, we all know that pistols chambered in .45 ACP and firing standard ammunition have to be quite heavy in order to mitigate felt recoil (always a problem for people of smaller stature, such as women). To be of value as a “force multiplier” in personal protection, a handgun must be a kind of *vade mecum* in the same sense as one’s wallet and cell phone and house keys, always with one through the activities of daily life, and carrying an M1911a (not to mention a Desert Eagle) gets to be like toting a friggin’ brick.
For all the tendency to dismiss a .22 caliber pistol as barely one step up from a pellet gun, it should be remembered that to the individual looking down the muzzle of *any* firearm steady in the hands of someone pissed off, confident, and willing to use it, .22 inches’ worth of muzzle diameter can look like the mouth of hell itself.

22LR is a VERY bad choice for a defensive handgun, for three reasons:
1) The priming system used in rimfire cartridges is not reliable, and regardless of the ammo you buy, there’s an excessive chance that a solid firing pin hit will not produce a “bang”;
2) In semiauto 22’s, due to the weak cartridge, blowback design and small size, extraction and chambering are very iffy, even in a clean gun under range conditions, and nothing to rely on in defensive conditions; and
3) While I don’t want to get shot by a 22, and it can definitely be deadly out of rifle length (16″+) or even larger handgun barrels (6″+), the compact handgun that someone might choose to carry will probably have only a 2-3″ barrel and out of such a short barrel, the 22 bullet may not be going fast enough to penetrate heavy clothing (ordinary clothing like denim or leather) or a bare skull. N.B. there are many cases where 25 ACP failed to penetrate a bare skull, and out of short barrels the 25 ACP is comparable in velocity and slightly greater in energy than the 22LR.
22LR out of rifle length barrels has killed many men in the last 120+ years, but out of 2-4″ barrels it’s just too weak to recommend to anyone.
Low recoil and price of practice ammo are totally relevant factors, and for that reason I think 9mm is an excellent choice for most people. Someone who is extremely sensitive to recoil might consider 5.7x28mm, which is not a wonder but is adequate and light recoil, and as a centerfire has much more reliable priming, or 22 Magnum in a quality revolver, which addresses the reliability and effectiveness issues. Note that 22 Magnum rimfire (WMR) out of a 4-5″ barrel has roughly the same velocity and energy as a 22 LR out of a 16″ barrel, but is usually made to a higher quality standard, has a better bullet design, and the 22 WMR case is very slightly tapered which makes extraction and chambering more reliable.

I hadn’t considered .38 short, with which I have no experience. I’m told that .32 ACP and .380 ACP are also acceptable (can’t go *too* wrong with anything Mr. Browning has had his hands upon). In my very limited personal time with .22 LR handguns, I have encountered no problems along the lines discussed by Persnickety, but I’m certain that his familiarity with these implements is superior to my own.
I didn’t want to discuss Fabrique Nationale’s 5.7x28mm round (developed, if memory serves, for the very scientifictional-looking P90 seen so impressively on *Stargate SG-1*) chiefly because I’d gotten the impression that the only handgun chambered for this cartridge is FN’s goddam pricey Five-seveN, the semiautomatic used by that whackjob jihadi pshrink in the Ft. Hood “workplace violence” episode.
Despite the stigma associated with that proof – as if one were needed – of “Gun-Free Zone” signs translating into Arabic as “بيئة غنية الهدف” (“target-rich environment”), I find the Five-seveN’s reported characteristics interesting, particularly as regards magazine capacity. When the self-defense guys advise: “Empty the magazine!” this weapon offers the opportunity to re-define “overkill.”
But the price of the firearm itself – as well as the cost for ammunition – grits in my Sicilian craw. llpoh speaks well to the old axiom *Si visit pacem, para bellum* in his regard for the ubiquitous 9x19mm cartridge, which seems to feed most of the semiautomatic handguns on the planet.
Still and all, we’re discussing a “lady’s pistol” to this purpose. So what models of 9mm semiautomatics might fit the hand that rocks the cradle and the wrist that is dainty and supple rather than the upper extremity suitable for the clean-and-jerk?

22LR pistols are great for practice because they are cheap to shoot. But I haven’t met one yet that is practical to carry that doesn’t jam. Guns like the Ruger MKIII are uber reliable but they are range pistols. Anything in 22LR resembling an actual combat/compact pistol is finicky. Feed them the wrong ammo and all they’ll do is piss you off. I have SIG P226-22 right now and all the damn thing will run is CCI Mini Mags. Given the cost of the little bastards I may as well just shoot the nine.
The most important part in selecting the proper pistol for the job is comfort. Most pistols that are practical to carry and built by the major manufacturers are pretty reliable these days. Hand guns should fit like shoes – they need to be comfortable and feel as though they are an extension of your limb. After that it is all about practice. The more you practice the more effective the weapon is regardless of the caliber.
It doesn’t have to be fancy, flashy or expensive to do the job. It just needs to fit and be reliable.

If you are looking for a new piece the M&P series (preferably in 9mm) from S&W is a good place to start looking. It comes in a variety of sizes, is inexpensive, reliable and ergonomically probably one of the nicest pistols to shoot. The grips are interchangeable with 3 different sizes suitable for hands ranging from girly to ogre. Mine has close to 10 thousand rounds through it now. I’ve run it for upwards of 2000 rounds without cleaning it and it never skipped a beat. The mags are so dirty at this stage the slide is failing to hold open on the last round. I leave some of them that way because it happens intermittently and is good for running drills.
As for hit rates being stunningly low – I suspect this is true if you think this is the proper way to hold your pistol:

Some of the guys I’ve shot and trained with over the years are insanely fast and accurate with their side arms. They run them like they are an extension of their bodies so naturally that for the average guy like me to ever engage them would mean a quick and timely end to my existence. They key as I see it? Trigger time. Find one that fits and is dependable and shoot it lots. There is no substitute.

I won’t argue with Tucci. I believe that almost any gun is better than no gun. I have found that the whole small frame/woman thing is BS. Training is the key. My wife is small, 5’2″ a fuzz over 110lbs goes to the range with me every 4-5 weeks. Fires everything in the vault at some point in the year.
Her favorite is an older 2nd gen Glock 23, but she does just fine with my Glock 36.
What ever you decide to use make sure you have trained and been trained (professionally) with it. Extensively.

Handgun choice is personal, except when a gun is just junk. I’ll skip junk. I would suggest the midsize/compact frame 9s such as the Glock 19, Ruger SR9c, M&P9c, etc. They are generally similar and all work OK. The Glock 19 is my personal pick, and recently became the primary handgun of USN SEALs (replacing the Sig 226 that they are wearing out), but if someone prefers another that’s fine too. The subcompact or pocket size guns like the Ruger LC9/LC9s are significantly smaller and easier to conceal, but also have much more recoil and will be more likely to jam if limp-wristed. On the revolver side, the Ruger LCR is worth a look, as well as various old S&W standbys. 327 Federal is an interesting revolver option if you can find the ammo for it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.327_Federal_Magnum
Skip anything weaker than 38 Special in a revolver, except for 22 Magnum in a longer barrel. There are some revolvers chambered for 9mm and that would be an excellent choice considering size, power and price of ammo.

There were only four decent 9mm handguns back when that competition started: the Sig P226, Beretta 92, the uncommon 9mm 1911s, and the S&W design. I don’t think the Army ever considered another 1911 in a smaller cartridge. The Beretta and Sig were the finalists, and the Beretta won because of a ridiculous mud test. The Sig is actually a better gun in all ways.
Some excellent guns such as the Glock 17 and Ruger P85 came out just a few years too late to be in that contest, and possibly win it.

This will create intense pain and give you time to break contact and escape. I would agree (on the premise that “A kind word and a gun will get you further than a kind word alone”), but I’m prepared to allow that a .22 LR to the *os frontalis* will serve quite as well in deterrence at common combat ranges while being more manageable in the hands of a woman less practiced (and of lower average wrist strength) than is the average male pistolero.
Not to mention the fact that such a handgun chambered in .22 LR is apt to be less weighty, less expensive, cheaper to practice with (why do people always seem to ignore the need to *practice* with these life preservers?), and less likely to result in overpenetration when used.
In addition, we all know that pistols chambered in .45 ACP and firing standard ammunition have to be quite heavy in order to mitigate felt recoil (always a problem for people of smaller stature, such as women). To be of value as a “force multiplier” in personal protection, a handgun must be a kind of *vade mecum* in the same sense as one’s wallet and cell phone and house keys, always with one through the activities of daily life, and carrying an M1911a (not to mention a Desert Eagle) gets to be like toting a friggin’ brick.
For all the tendency to dismiss a .22 caliber pistol as barely one step up from a pellet gun, it should be remembered that to the individual looking down the muzzle of *any* firearm steady in the hands of someone pissed off, confident, and willing to use it, .22 inches’ worth of muzzle diameter can look like the mouth of hell itself.

22LR is a VERY bad choice for a defensive handgun, for three reasons:
1) The priming system used in rimfire cartridges is not reliable, and regardless of the ammo you buy, there’s an excessive chance that a solid firing pin hit will not produce a “bang”;
2) In semiauto 22’s, due to the weak cartridge, blowback design and small size, extraction and chambering are very iffy, even in a clean gun under range conditions, and nothing to rely on in defensive conditions; and
3) While I don’t want to get shot by a 22, and it can definitely be deadly out of rifle length (16″+) or even larger handgun barrels (6″+), the compact handgun that someone might choose to carry will probably have only a 2-3″ barrel and out of such a short barrel, the 22 bullet may not be going fast enough to penetrate heavy clothing (ordinary clothing like denim or leather) or a bare skull. N.B. there are many cases where 25 ACP failed to penetrate a bare skull, and out of short barrels the 25 ACP is comparable in velocity and slightly greater in energy than the 22LR.
22LR out of rifle length barrels has killed many men in the last 120+ years, but out of 2-4″ barrels it’s just too weak to recommend to anyone.
Low recoil and price of practice ammo are totally relevant factors, and for that reason I think 9mm is an excellent choice for most people. Someone who is extremely sensitive to recoil might consider 5.7x28mm, which is not a wonder but is adequate and light recoil, and as a centerfire has much more reliable priming, or 22 Magnum in a quality revolver, which addresses the reliability and effectiveness issues. Note that 22 Magnum rimfire (WMR) out of a 4-5″ barrel has roughly the same velocity and energy as a 22 LR out of a 16″ barrel, but is usually made to a higher quality standard, has a better bullet design, and the 22 WMR case is very slightly tapered which makes extraction and chambering more reliable.
At the very least, the Gals should be issued pepper spray along with instructions on how to use it. Otherwise send the fuckers back where they came from.
P – great synopsis. .22 are ok as execution guns, but for personal protection a 9mm/.38 etc. is probably the go.

I hadn’t considered .38 short, with which I have no experience. I’m told that .32 ACP and .380 ACP are also acceptable (can’t go *too* wrong with anything Mr. Browning has had his hands upon). In my very limited personal time with .22 LR handguns, I have encountered no problems along the lines discussed by Persnickety, but I’m certain that his familiarity with these implements is superior to my own.
I didn’t want to discuss Fabrique Nationale’s 5.7x28mm round (developed, if memory serves, for the very scientifictional-looking P90 seen so impressively on *Stargate SG-1*) chiefly because I’d gotten the impression that the only handgun chambered for this cartridge is FN’s goddam pricey Five-seveN, the semiautomatic used by that whackjob jihadi pshrink in the Ft. Hood “workplace violence” episode.
Despite the stigma associated with that proof – as if one were needed – of “Gun-Free Zone” signs translating into Arabic as “بيئة غنية الهدف” (“target-rich environment”), I find the Five-seveN’s reported characteristics interesting, particularly as regards magazine capacity. When the self-defense guys advise: “Empty the magazine!” this weapon offers the opportunity to re-define “overkill.”
But the price of the firearm itself – as well as the cost for ammunition – grits in my Sicilian craw. llpoh speaks well to the old axiom *Si visit pacem, para bellum* in his regard for the ubiquitous 9x19mm cartridge, which seems to feed most of the semiautomatic handguns on the planet.
Still and all, we’re discussing a “lady’s pistol” to this purpose. So what models of 9mm semiautomatics might fit the hand that rocks the cradle and the wrist that is dainty and supple rather than the upper extremity suitable for the clean-and-jerk?
22LR pistols are great for practice because they are cheap to shoot. But I haven’t met one yet that is practical to carry that doesn’t jam. Guns like the Ruger MKIII are uber reliable but they are range pistols. Anything in 22LR resembling an actual combat/compact pistol is finicky. Feed them the wrong ammo and all they’ll do is piss you off. I have SIG P226-22 right now and all the damn thing will run is CCI Mini Mags. Given the cost of the little bastards I may as well just shoot the nine.
The most important part in selecting the proper pistol for the job is comfort. Most pistols that are practical to carry and built by the major manufacturers are pretty reliable these days. Hand guns should fit like shoes – they need to be comfortable and feel as though they are an extension of your limb. After that it is all about practice. The more you practice the more effective the weapon is regardless of the caliber.
It doesn’t have to be fancy, flashy or expensive to do the job. It just needs to fit and be reliable.

If you are looking for a new piece the M&P series (preferably in 9mm) from S&W is a good place to start looking. It comes in a variety of sizes, is inexpensive, reliable and ergonomically probably one of the nicest pistols to shoot. The grips are interchangeable with 3 different sizes suitable for hands ranging from girly to ogre. Mine has close to 10 thousand rounds through it now. I’ve run it for upwards of 2000 rounds without cleaning it and it never skipped a beat. The mags are so dirty at this stage the slide is failing to hold open on the last round. I leave some of them that way because it happens intermittently and is good for running drills.
As for hit rates being stunningly low – I suspect this is true if you think this is the proper way to hold your pistol:

Some of the guys I’ve shot and trained with over the years are insanely fast and accurate with their side arms. They run them like they are an extension of their bodies so naturally that for the average guy like me to ever engage them would mean a quick and timely end to my existence. They key as I see it? Trigger time. Find one that fits and is dependable and shoot it lots. There is no substitute.

I won’t argue with Tucci. I believe that almost any gun is better than no gun. I have found that the whole small frame/woman thing is BS. Training is the key. My wife is small, 5’2″ a fuzz over 110lbs goes to the range with me every 4-5 weeks. Fires everything in the vault at some point in the year.
Her favorite is an older 2nd gen Glock 23, but she does just fine with my Glock 36.
What ever you decide to use make sure you have trained and been trained (professionally) with it. Extensively.

Handgun choice is personal, except when a gun is just junk. I’ll skip junk. I would suggest the midsize/compact frame 9s such as the Glock 19, Ruger SR9c, M&P9c, etc. They are generally similar and all work OK. The Glock 19 is my personal pick, and recently became the primary handgun of USN SEALs (replacing the Sig 226 that they are wearing out), but if someone prefers another that’s fine too. The subcompact or pocket size guns like the Ruger LC9/LC9s are significantly smaller and easier to conceal, but also have much more recoil and will be more likely to jam if limp-wristed. On the revolver side, the Ruger LCR is worth a look, as well as various old S&W standbys. 327 Federal is an interesting revolver option if you can find the ammo for it:

Skip anything weaker than 38 Special in a revolver, except for 22 Magnum in a longer barrel. There are some revolvers chambered for 9mm and that would be an excellent choice considering size, power and price of ammo.

There were only four decent 9mm handguns back when that competition started: the Sig P226, Beretta 92, the uncommon 9mm 1911s, and the S&W design. I don’t think the Army ever considered another 1911 in a smaller cartridge. The Beretta and Sig were the finalists, and the Beretta won because of a ridiculous mud test. The Sig is actually a better gun in all ways.
Some excellent guns such as the Glock 17 and Ruger P85 came out just a few years too late to be in that contest, and possibly win it.
