HAPPY 80TH MOM

My mom won’t see this post because she doesn’t have that new fangled thing we call the internet. She won’t see it on her phone, because she has a flip phone. In other words, she’s old. Lot’s of old and young people at her surprise party today. She thought she was going to my house for a cookout. Instead I took her to Chap’s Taproom where 40 family and friends were waiting for her.

She was completely taken by surprise. She cried when she saw everyone there to celebrate her 80th birthday. Next Saturday my cousins are throwing her sister a 90th birthday party.

She grew up on 19th and Porter in South Philly. Her true love in life, besides my Dad, was the Mummers. If you aren’t from Philly, you probably have no idea what the mummers means. Every New Years day a bunch of crazy drunks would march down Broad Street in South Philly dressed in crazy outfits while playing string band music. My parents would drag us down every year so we could freeze our asses off standing in frigid cold weather.

As a double surprise, my sister arranged for a four piece mummers group to perform at the party today. I think they were older than her and wondered if they would make it through the performance without keeling over. That’s my mother in green doing the mummers strut.

The Early Years – who is that cute as a button kid with a sailor hat?

Our wedding day – 25 years ago.

The later years – devoted until the end

Happy birthday mom. I love you.

Congratulations to your Mom admin.

The midget playing accordion would have worth the price of admission!

As we dial down to what is real and what isn’t that evening looked very VERY real – thanks for sharing.

Who you callin’ old? Your mom looks like she’s in great shape despite her years. I know a lot of 50 year olds who can’t move like that! Happy Birthday to your mom. What a nice thing y’all did for her!

I’m not from Philly, but knew what Mummers were. IIRC, I watched them in parades when I was a kid.

Congrats to your Mom. May you have her for another decade. Be grateful for every minute you have with her, because any day could be the last.

Strange thing about old people and the internet. My mother (1933-2013) was, of course, highly computer literate and spent a lot of time on the net- after all, she installed the new software system at her place of work as an accountant there before she retired in 1992. But, then, my great aunt (1919-2006) was also highly computer literate and was all over the chatrooms and online news sites almost until her dying breath, sending us funny stuff in the email every day. But I had to show my boyfriend born 1938 how to download an email attachment every time he got one.

Some people just don’t want to be bothered with new gadgets, and I don’t blame them. I don’t bother with the apps on my phone, for the most part.

Well, my mom’s 100, and she never used or figured out a flip phone. Her son has that new fangled shit all figured out. Heh..

Give your mom a big hug and kiss from all your friends on TBP, Jim.

Congratulations to your Mom, and a very Happy Mother’s Day to all.

No real celebration in the DelVal is complete without Mummers on tap. Been stabbed by over enthusiastic umbrella dancers on more than one occasion.
