Grandmother with gun confronts intruders in her house

Why didn’t she wait for the 2nd responder heroes to save her? Doesn’t she know guns are dangerous?

BOYNTON BEACH (CBS12) — A Boynton Beach grandmother was home alone when three burglars entered her house.

But what she did next may surprise you.

“It was really scary. It was a very, very scary situation. ‘Cause I had no idea what they were gonna do,” said the woman, whom we agreed not to identify.

About 12:45 Tuesday afternoon she went to the peephole and saw a man was at her front door, banging on the door, ringing the bell.

He left but came back a few minutes later, with a T-shirt over his head, and putting on gloves, so she ran to the bedroom to get a handgun from the dresser beside her bed.

“I heard something, glass breaking and then I was freaking out,” she recalled.

Three men burglars—- were in her living room, and she was in the bedroom standing just inside the doorway ready to shoot them if they entered.

“I decided that it’s either them or me, you know. I had to save my life. One of them came to the door here and opened it and when he did I had the gun in his face,” she said.

She said she had no idea if the intruders were armed. But she was not about to become a victim.

She had a gun and she was ready to use it.

“I raised the gun and pointed it at his face,” she explained.

She says the three guys were mortified and shocked to see a woman aiming a gun at them.

“I called them bastards and I said I’m gonna kill you! All three of them started running for the door,” she told CBS12.

You can still see the damage they did to the front door, where they broke it down when they came in.

She says they were in the house for maybe 30 seconds. They didn’t steal anything.

“I think it was the worst day of my life. It was the most horrifying day of my life. I couldn’t believe it, I thought it was a bad nightmare,” she said.

She’s just relieved she had a handgun to defend herself with.

“I think it’s wonderful. I think it’s the only thing that saved me. It was my Godsend. I don’t know what I would’ve done without it. I’ve never experienced anything like that before in my life. It was horrible, to have three strangers in your house and ransacking it. I was very angry. It’s like, how dare you do this! You know. This is our home,” the woman said.

Because of this incident she’s telling her neighbors if they don’t have a gun, they should think about getting one.

She and her husband also intend to get a bigger, more powerful handgun to replace the .22 that she now has. She plans to go to a shooting range and practice to make sure she’s ready if it happens again.

That was mighty nice of her to give them a few seconds to run.

I was thinking the same thing. They were lucky it wasn’t me, I would have shot first and spoke later.

Yep, this was in FL, too, which is where I live. Castle Laws, you can shoot them right in the face, which is how it should be if the force their way into your house. A couple seconds to run is indeed much more than they’d have gotten in my house. All that passes for a warning is the sound of a shotgun racking, in which case you have about half a second before I send number 4 birdshot your way.

@ Iska
She was a lot nicer than I would have been. Maybe it was her grandmotherly instincts coming out. My instincts would have been different.

Way to go, Mawmaw. I hope her ol’ man buys her something bigger. I recommend at least a .357 mag.

You figure that most perps have already committed multiple similar crimes without encountering an armed citizen. They are startled and their demeanor immediately changes to “please don’t shoot me as I run.” This incident is evidence that 95% of the time, you don’t need to shoot or even point; the mere presence of a firearm is a sufficient deterrent.

“This incident is evidence that 95% of the time, you don’t need to shoot…..”

Yeah but then they just go on to be a problem for someone else. Just consider shooting them a public service. 🙂

IS, I agree. Eventually they will hurt or kill someone. Better they get taken out instead. I basically consider them to have made that choice by breaking into peoples houses.

Yeah, but there’s an awful lot of time consuming paperwork involved when you do.

My Nana gave up the ghost a decade, but stories like this one bring back poignant memories of both her and Granddad.

My Grandfather owned a Thompson submachine gun back in the days before they were restricted and you could buy one at a hardware store.

FWIW, he was a cop during the “roaring twenties” and actually carried it with him on occasion.

I wonder if the three little dirtbags remembered to pack clean underwear before breaking in. I am sure they had some big pant-loads to drag around as they left her house.

Boynton has undergone a shocking transformation. A friend of mine bought a 64 unit apartment complex 5 or 6 years ago, he was telling me about it, it sounded great, i knew the area well. Nice, middle class homes all around it, next to a hospital which would be an ideal feeder for tenants. Wrong. I put some crews together to upgrade the place top to bottom, and when i started visiting the site, got the shock of my life. It was like they had used a neutron bomb. All the middle class residents had DISAPEARED. they had been replaced completely by haitians. Mind you, this was prime real estate, just a few blocks from the beach. Not an american face to be seen. We finished the rehab in about six months, my buddy sold to the next sucker, and that was that.

SoFla can be really rough. Unless you live in a very wealthy neighborhood, you’re usually proximate to the riff raff. Condos are big here b/c security is usually pretty tight. If you live in the older middle/working class neighborhoods with no gated entry, security or surveillance ANYONE can walk right up to your door, knock and proceed to break-in. I’ve had several friends who have been burglarized and it was always a single family dwelling, older middle class/working class neighborhood and riff raff nearby. They won’t dare break-in if they know someone is home as TONS of us are packing the heat. Like Granny here. Shoulda shot the SOBs anyway.. although with a .22 she probably would’ve been arrested for being racist.

A Bahamian woman explained to me why Haitians were loathed
in the Bahamas. “They keep breaking into our country and squat in old garages, or build shacks. It is just awful…they commit crimes
constantly and steal and are violent when confronted”.
We had really wanted to be at least snowbirds in SW FL., but alas,
too many people, too much crime.

contrast this incident with a story that was on one of the national news telecasts, I think CBS, the other night. The big news was a new ‘app’ developed for use during a mass shooting event. The app automatically contacts police and gives precise coordinates via GPS. It was given very favorable and one-sided coverage by the news (of course). What wasn’t mentioned, naturally, is you don’t have time in a situation like that to use an app or dial a phone and wait on a police response. And as some recent cases have demonstrated, even when you do call them, the police are content to stand around and remain inactive for hours
