Anti-Columbus Day protesters who blocked traffic and then surrounded a pickup truck in Reno, Nevada, reportedly threatening the driver with bodily harm, received a brutal surprise this Monday.
The frustrated driver finally had enough of the threats and decided to pummel his way through the angry crowd, leaving several injured people in his truck’s wake.
It was a brutal scene to behold, but whether or not the driver deserved criminal liability for the injuries sustained by the protesters had not yet been decided by local authorities.
The protesters were acting as a group in stopping the truck. When some of the protesters threaten the truck occupants (“I’ll tear you out of that car, you little fuck!”) the driver was in reasonable fear for his life. At that point, the driver is justified in breaking free of the crowd which is threatening him.

MY wife and son have been told what to do when this happens. Windows up call 911. When threatened or when they start to beat on the vehicle hit the horn for 3 seconds and punch it. If faced with any weapon or if they try to break the glass fuck the horn.
Several cried like 3-year olds–it never occurs to them that someone may not accept their bullying and violent threats.
I’d like to find out about follow-ups and see if any charges are filed. A clear case of self-defense in the eyes of any intelligent human being.

I can’t find an online English copy of La Florida del Inca, so I will have to paraphrase from memory. My entire life, there’s been a family urban legend that says we’re part Indian. All based on a photo that was hanging at great-grandpop’s place, back on the farm. When it was still standing. Of course, now, no one knows where the photo is.
And of course, there’s no roll number, and no benefits, certainly. Just an unsubstantiated story. Over the years, when I’ve (gently) tried to push the aunts and uncles for something more concrete, it becomes obvious that it’s a Sacred Cow.
Now, technology has improved so much, one can send in a spit swab, and get the DNA analyzed. I often think it might be worth a couple of hundred bucks to see, except in the end, that’s no good for anything, except to satisfy my curiosity.

Driver of the truck is pretty much screwed for two reasons. First, he won’t be able to argue that he was in fear for his life. Both he and the passenger had their windows down and were literally inches from the protesters outside the truck. This is not consistent with being in fear for your life. Second, he had a reasonable alternative to running people over. He could have easily backed up and took a different route. In fact, one of the protesters can be heard to tell him “back up and go around.” He will likely be charged with assault, at a minimum, depending on the severity of injuries sustained.
When first confronted with the situation, I also felt like the driver was justified. But after thinking about it and considering that there is a high likelihood that many of us will be out in the streets protesting in the near future, it may be a good thing that those who don’t agree with us can’t simply run us over, gun us down, or simply assault us for protesting.
Gonewest, state laws vary, but here in Florida, we aren’t required to back down from physical threats. It’s called stand your ground. The moment they started threatening the peaceful occupants of the truck, too bad. And no, I won’t be standing in the middle of the street protesting. That’s for weenies.
If you approach a vehicle in a hostile manner that makes you the aggressor.
The aggressor in this case was not the victims who tried to stay inside the truck and be left alone without making any threats against the mob attacking them.
That makes their action of driving away from a threat of being torn out of their truck an act of self defense.
Those guys that got run over were asking for it, and I imagine anyl reasonable man on a jury would see it that way.

I watched the video again and didn’t see anyone physically touch the driver or the passenger in the vehicle. I heard a threat made, but the threat wasn’t acted upon. You may have missed my point that they had an alternative to driving through the crowd. They could have just backed up and drove the other way. I’m not advocating that you should always run the other way when threatened. But this sure looked like the driver was trying to push the issue.
In any case, no need to argue about it. Time will tell how this is handled and what, if any, consequences the driver faces.
Who was attacking who? The mob illegally blocking the street and stopping the truck in a hostile and threatening manner or the people in a truck just driving down the street as they were legally allowed to do.
That makes everything said and done by the attackers acting on the threat.
Think a bit, it won’t hurt your brain and may even help it.
Perhaps you should practice what you preach.
Watch the driver in the video. Does he look threatened? If you were the driver and felt threatened, wouldn’t you raise your window? Same with the passenger. You would want some distance or a barrier between you and the people outside. The driver doesn’t. He just sits there. Look at his face. He isn’t scared. He looks belligerent.

Protest on the sidewalk. If they run you over (or attempt too), you have a clear case of self defense by being on the sidewalk.

I’m not a fan of Columbus myself, he was a prick at best- cutting off natives hands for not bringing him enough gold, enslaving people and giving native women to the crew for fun. Plus there is good evidence he wasn’t the first to discover the new world, the Vikings were.
That said, these dickless wonders had it coming for threatening the driver. I hope he gets away with it scott free.

I’m really curious to see what happens to the driver. Hopefully nothing. A lot of people will probably pay attention to this. If the driver is not charged, more people are going to do the same thing, with bloody and hilarious results. Regular people are getting sick of this shit. As atarfcker said above, how this plays out will likely depend on the state he was in, as those vary greatly.
It’s also funny to observe the juvenile behavior of these people. They really expected to be able to block traffic and threaten people in their cars without consequence, and went from faux tough guys to their complete pussy selves the instant that guy just drove through them.

According to this, he hasn’t been arrested, but police are still ‘investigating’. He did the smart thing, which is to immediately call the police and tell them what happened, then wait for the cops to show up and give a statement.
Only problem that may come up is that a couple of protestors are claiming the driver and his passenger came to their rally held nearby and then followed them in their vehicle to the intersection prior to the incident. If true that will make it hard to make a stand your ground case if he followed them there. Still don’t see how you can just decide to block an intersection like that and then be surprised when someone decides they are sick of your bullshit, but unfortunately I’m not in charge. Someone needs to remind these fuckheads that streets are for cars and sidewalks are for people.
