I recently changed my designation at work to “Hispanic”. Actually it is true, legally speaking. I was born in a place that was formerly part of the Spanish Empire — and legally, that is justification, that and the desire to self identify as Hispanic. If you were born in New England there might be some question, but pretty much all the rest of continental USA was once part of the Empire. Atlanta? Richmond, VA? (Yep… even the Chesapeake Bay used to be the Bahia Santa Maria.) Oklahoma City? All up the Mississippi valley… The old Spanish Empire went all over. Of course I have some Native American as well. I guess that makes me mestizo. And the Native Americans came (so they say) from Asia — so I am Asian. But everyone (so they say) came from Africa, so I am African American. Now I can even self-identify my gender!

I don’t think anyone should be allowed to transition until after 25. I respect an adults bodily autonomy (like I “respect” an adult’s right to smoke), but teens don’t have enough experience to make that call, especially given that the effects of hormones are worse during puberty when you’re still developing. This becomes especially problematic when 90% of them will simply outgrow it, and diagnosing it is so slipshod (“Oh, your four-year-old is always messing with his older sister’s dolls and watches the same tv shows? It can’t be that he’s just a little kid copying an older sibling. He must secretly want to be a girl”). There are a ton of symptoms and side-effects to those drugs: infertility, lymphanic and immune disorders, stunted growth, and on and on. That doesn’t even count the mental effects that are co-morbid with gender dsyphoria: depression, suicide, etc. Everyone tries to blame it on transphobia (in the same way every black problem is racism, every gay problem is homophobia, and every female problem is mysogyny), which is really a pathetic cop-out. Not to mention all the personality defects that seem to accopany transexuality; every trans I have met in my (admittedly limited) experience has suffered from varying bouts of egomania, self-loathing, paranoia, and munchasen’s syndrome. I’m a utilitarian and I want the best for people. I don’t think the kids should be bullied, but sticking our head in the sand isn’t healthy or fair to the sufferers. It’s the equivalent of 1850’s medicine, where the conditions were made to fit the treatment and philosophy of the “learned” doctors, rather than base the treatment off the facts. The whole gender-bending apoligism is nothing more than some bizarre reverse-Victorianesque ideology mascarading as truth. Our kids will look back at this as we do at electroshock therapy and bedlamming women for hysteria.
