Robert Shiller: An economic crisis looms amid the chaos brought by Trump

‘I think his timing is just his own personal timing for this: He’s been president for a year, it’s about time he does something that gets people’s excitement going. He has a philosophy of life that that’s what you have to do: If you want to stay famous, celebrity — which he obviously relishes — you’ve got to be constantly creating news.’

That’s what Nobel Prize-winning Yale economist Robert Shiller said to CNBC over the weekend about the president’s role in the ramp-up in U.S.-China trade tensions.

Speaking in Beijing Saturday, Shiller went on to slam Trump as a “showman,” whose actions are “totally unbecoming for a president.”

He warned that the “chaos” brought by a trade war could have a devastating impact.

“The immediate thing will be an economic crisis because these enterprises are built on long-term planning, they’ve developed a skilled workforce and ways of doing things,” Shiller told CNBC. “We have to rediscover these things in whatever country after the imports are cut off.”

Watch the interview:

On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.78%  and the S&P 500 SPX, +1.50% on the heels of their worst weekly performance in years, both surged on reports the U.S. and China are conducting behind-the-scenes talks to avert a global trade war.

JS, that has to be the best comment I ever read on the Burning Platform. Guys like Schiller ruined the country. I read somewhere today we’re going to start growing our own hemp. It could come in real handy

A lot of these guys are going to turn out to be hollow shills for globalization. When the doomsday scenarios they keep predicting fail to happen when heaven forbid, we do what’s best for us, at what point do I get to declare the win? The way it is now, I’m sort of screwed. I can say it’s not going to fall apart, and here’s how we fix it, and everyone else can say oh, but wait till tomorrow, like they have for the last 8 years. Look at the new deal we just struck with South Korea. All it took was a tariff on steel, and they decided real fast that they need to open up there market to our cars. That’s not chaos, that’s results. Japan is next. Then Germany.

Clinton was our first Black president, Obama our first Gay and Trump is our first Jewish president. Perhaps I should write his name thus: (((Trump))).

That seems to be what most posters here believe Trump is doing, apparently including the author of the article here.

I think an economic crisis was in the cards long before Trump got into office.

@KaD – That’s what I thought, too! I’ve been reading about economic collapse since 2007. At that time, I knew OF Trump, but he hardly registered. I heard it was George W’s fault, then I heard it was Obama’s fault. Now, it’s Trump’s fault?

Hmmmmm……..I’m seeing a pattern, here.

Its the Central Bankers plan (not their fault)…and it was baked into the 1971 Nixon cake that both parties have allowed the Money Changers to keep in their NWO oven.

There is no Nobel Prize for economics.

“Ludvig Nobel despised people who cared more about profits than society’s well-being. There is nothing to indicate that he would have wanted such a prize, and that the association with the Nobel prizes is a PR coup by economists to improve their reputation”. Peter Nobel, grandson. I think Jim is confusing the “Swedish National Bank’s prize in economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel”, with an actual Nobel Prize.

It’s about time we demanded tit for tat when trading with other countries. There’s absolutely NO reason to give another country a pass and allow anything but parity.
