Two days earlier, the National Guard troops were called to Kent to suppress students rioting in protest of the Vietnam War and the U.S. invasion of Cambodia. The next day, scattered protests were dispersed by tear gas, and on May 4 class resumed at Kent State University. By noon that day, despite a ban on rallies, some 2,000 people had assembled on the campus. National Guard troops arrived and ordered the crowd to disperse, fired tear gas, and advanced against the students with bayonets fixed on their rifles. Some of the protesters, refusing to yield, responded by throwing rocks and verbally taunting the troops.

Minutes later, without firing a warning shot, the Guardsmen discharged more than 60 rounds toward a group of demonstrators in a nearby parking lot, killing four and wounding nine. The closest casualty was 20 yards away, and the farthest was almost 250 yards away. After a period of disbelief, shock, and attempts at first aid, angry students gathered on a nearby slope and were again ordered to move by the Guardsmen. Faculty members were able to convince the group to disperse, and further bloodshed was prevented.

In 1974, at the end of a criminal investigation into the Kent State incident, a federal court dropped all charges levied against eight Ohio National Guardsmen for their role in the students’ deaths.

There is more to the Kent State shooting than is recorded in the commonly accepted history of the event.
Student protesters and others (outsiders) had been rioting for a week, breaking windows of the local businesses, and, in general, committing crimes and exercising mayhem and lawless behavior. It was local businesses that cried out for help to quell these disturbances, and to help bring things “back to normal”.
The National Guard troops were not seasoned veterans, but were local types without any experience in crowd control or handling rioters.
While it is regrettable that the deaths occurred, during this tragic event in American history, the blame must be put on the rioters themselves, not the National Guard troops who were asked to do a thankless job despite not being experienced in dealing with such events.

Kent State was one of the few times Leftist rioters faced any real consequences for their actions.

We also did not have “less lethal” responses available. Did many Tea Party Protests in NYC and the police were good at setting limits on what you could bring (sticks for signs!) not sure why sticks and bike locks and skateboards are permitted in CA, OR, WA etc. I guess ANTIFA needs all the help they can get.

When the shit hits the fan, you can count on the fact that a vast majority – if not all – National Guard, military, and police, will willingly fire on their fellow citizens at the orders of their commanders. That is what blind obedience training achieves and that is always its ultimate goal. Indeed, a good story will be told as to why the killings must take place, but few if any will think independently or question the “official government narrative.”

So true. I was there. It wasn’t about the left or the right. It was just blind shooting. Many victims were nowhere near the scene. It was and is stupid and heartbreaking and justice has never been served. Thank you burning platform for mentioning Kent State. No one else did…I still miss you, Allison.
