(Reuters) – The U.S. Justice Department has agreed to provide congressional investigators confidential records on a failed gun-trafficking operation during the Obama administration known as “Fast and Furious” that long has been criticized by Republican lawmakers.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the Justice Department would hand over documents to the Republican-led House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform that had been withheld by Democratic former President Barack Obama’s administration.

The agreement reached by Republican President Donald Trump’s administration will effectively end a six-year long legal battle in which the committee had gone to federal court to try to enforce a subpoena it had issued to obtain the records.

Congressional Republicans have been pressing the Justice Department for years about the operation. Named after a movie about car racing, the operation sought to curb gun-trafficking criminals who were selling weapons to Mexican drug cartels.

In June 2012, the Republican-led House voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder, an Obama appointee, in contempt for failing to turn over documents about the operation. The committee sued Holder for access to the documents in August 2012. Obama asserted executive privilege to block the disclosure of the documents.

Democrats at the time accused Republicans of engaging in a partisan witch hunt.

In an effort to build bigger cases against major gun traffickers who were selling arms to Mexican cartels, U.S. law enforcement officials elected not to prosecute lower-level offenders transporting more than 2,000 illegal guns.

The operation and its flaws became public after two of those firearms were found in Arizona at the scene of a fatal shooting of a U.S. Border Patrol agent.

In September 2012, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report faulting 12 department employees for failures related to the operation. The report vindicated Holder, concluding he neither conceived the operation nor attempted a cover-up.

Holder, now a partner at the law firm Covington and Burling LLP, could not be immediately reached at his office on Wednesday.

“Democrats at the time accused Republicans of engaging in a partisan witch hunt.”

I find this amusing in light of today’s special council investigation, an investigation with no actual known crime to justify it.

If a special council somehow got appointed to investigate this -where known crimes have actually been committed- I wonder if they would be making the same “witch hunt” claims about it?

Everyone knows Holder is guilty of murder in this operation. They refused to track these guns, as Bush had intended and provided for, when the scheme began. Holder, Obama, and the communist dems just wanted a masacre they could lay at the feet of US gun dealers. Back fire!!!!!!!

The list of egregious crimes that MSM ignores just got longer.

When someone is actually put behind bars, then I will take notice.

I would be disappointed if some of the guns involved with fast and furious did not have ‘lo-jack’ type devices hidden inside. At least every 10th one or so. And no one would want to expose the covert ops. Makes sense to me but what do I know? Some state secrets are worth keeping imo.

GPS devices are probably not practical for most guns since there is very little or no space to put them without interfering with the gun operating.

Maybe inside of some rifle stocks, but it would probably need to be designed into them with retrofitting being a problem.

RFID would work, but that requires they be near an RFID reader to track them.

I do like the idea of being able to install a hidden GPS tracker on my guns (one under my control) to locate them if stolen.

Wrong , my dog can be tracked with a chip the size of a grain of rice or a small pill ! It just was not done because Holder under Obama’s plan with Hillary Clinton cheering on was to covertly have these weapons appear in all the wrong places and blame FFL dealers and of course the law abiding gun owners must now surrender all their firearms . It backfired hence excutive privilege !
Any one who thinks the past and current adminatrations give a flying fuck about Americans and the Bill of Rights and the rule of law by adhering to the Constitution , WAKE THE HELL UP ! How about that little thing like a declaration of war before we commit troops and equipment or search and seizure or maybe a warrant approved by a judge specifically spelled out backed by oath and affirmation . I know it’s asking a lot to be free and left alone to excercise it !

Dog tracking GPS chips are attached to the collar and are rather large (as far as I’m aware, haven’t heard of one that wasn’t).

The RFID chips that are injected under the dog’s skin are read by a vet or animal shelter with an RFID reader if the dog shows up in one, not while it is running astray.

Boat Guy:
No, you are wrong. Your dog cannot be tracked with a microchip. Your dog’s microchip is a passive RFID device, meaning it has no power source with which to transmit a signal. The device must be scanned, which induces a small radio signal that is read by the scanner.
In other words, anon is correct.

It isn’t my question to answer, but FM, I think the day we get to find out all the details on the Huma and Weiner relationship and their connection to Hillary’s evil plan to take over the world for redistribution to her minions is the day Jesus walks down from the clouds.

Ask Stucky when he thinks that will happen.

What will be released will be dirt and gossip about pictures of Weiner’s weeny. If there indeed is a video of Huma and Hildebeast doing despicable things sexually, do we really need to see it?

Some days I think you might be right Maggie.

But cracks keep popping open and the evidence keeps piling up. So maybe.
